"Original " Design is a misleading term because the design is not the company's. Often designs from other companies are taken , manufactured, mass produced and then their own brand name added.
What is written above may be wrong..But i guess no one at wikipedia is checking it???

Key aspect of ODM neglected[edit]

Under ODM (Own design and Manufacturing), subcontracted firms carry out some product design and production tasks. This article implies that manufacturing on the side of the subcontracted firm is merely production to the exact specifications and expectations of the contractor. Really should highlight the aspects of in house product design and production tasks on the subcontractor side to differentiate from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.157.31.28 (talk) 16:29, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Rough edit[edit]

This is a rough edit, but I've been a bit busy today. The primary issues that I tried to explain is the actual operation and the international nature, though I'm thinking of editing to explain that while ODMs operate often for international trade (such as Chinese and Indian firms manufacturing goods for export under a brand name) this also often occurs locally, which is probably the more numerous occurance, but less noticed. However, due to the general downturn in production, especially in the UK, ODMs are less likely to occur locally (by Western standards). Nick Kerr 14:02, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

List of ODMs[edit]

Does anyone think we could include a list of CM computers and the ODM computers they are based on? There are several such lists on the internet.--Ridge Racer 21:35, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would very much like a list included in this article. Unfortunately, it would be hard to source the information and keep to keep it up to date. It appears that the parties wish to keep the relationships confidential, probably because it muddies the OEM's branding. Original research: my Lenovo ThinkPad was shipped to me by Wistron, so I guess that Lenovo uses Wistron as an ODM. DHR (talk) 14:56, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Merge? No.[edit]

ODM should not be merged with OEM - two different subjects. Read the articles. The tags should be removed soon. - Slo-mo 18:42, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

ODM means Own-Design Manufacture[edit]

ODM means Original Design Manufacturer and it is imho the medium stage between Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) and Own-Brand manufacture (OBM). OEMs are simply contract-manufacturers while ODM make their own designs i.e. ODMs make the whole product without marketing or support. OBMs make marketing and support but need not to do ODM/OEM. No[edit]

-Actually, original complaint is not true. Often the ODM company designs the product by themselves -- ie, ECS's motherboard electrical engineering does not involve Dell. There is a very distinct difference between OEM and ODM which I do not have sufficient time to discuss. It would be asinine to merge the two entries, however. Hopefully, in due time, I will expand this article and provide sufficient sources. Meanwhile, if someone wants to add the list of CM/ODM, that would be most beneficial.

Removed the merge request due to the responses on this discussion page.

I just question the market research facts and the source of the "facts".

Some reference info[edit]

Asus[edit]

Although it is also mentioned on the Asus page, neither this page or that has references for the claim that " Asus - who manufacture Macintosh computers for Apple Inc". Does anyone have references for this? All I can find is dubious news articles such as "Asus insider reveals Mac tablet", dated 2007, but nothing solid. Does anyone have real references? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.164.154 (talk) 12:43, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Patenting inconsistency[edit]

What is the reason for not patenting in Japan or the European Union? -Mardus (talk) 02:26, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The information is out of date. Hon Hai now files in Japan and EU.--Nowa (talk) 22:35, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I had similar thoughts when I noticed the ref was from 2003 as I'm pretty sure ODM has significantly expanded and probably also changed since then. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a ref confirming as such, so I simply tagged the sentence. Nil Einne (talk) 17:19, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
