What to do about Zviad Gamsakhurdia edit war?[edit]

I see Levzur is up to his usual tricks on Zviad Gamsakhurdia yet again. Hephaestos has suggested mediation followed by arbitration, which I'm sure Levzur will decline, but it's a step which clearly needs to be taken. Otherwise I see no end in sight to the edit war, given that even a temp ban hasn't deterred Levzur. Do you agree with this and given your involvement with the article, would you wish to be one of the parties requesting mediation? -- ChrisO 10:38, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)

London churches & cathedrals[edit]

Hi Secretlondon,

I've added a List of churches and cathedrals of London - if you do any more articles on this topic could you please list them on that page and add a link to the list? Thanks! -- ChrisO 12:03, 4 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi!
Thanks to all the tpi domain is now set up. How can we get Tok Pisin added in the language list in the (English) main page?

Quickpoll[edit]

Caroline, it appears that the quickpool you started about my hasty action against I am s*** could -- technically -- be archived according to the rules. The proposal got 7 AYES to 29 NAYS, which is less than 60% of the 36 votes.

However, out of both personal respect for you and a desire to "get with the program" I'm going to leave the disposition of this matter up to you. --Uncle Ed 16:25, 9 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Would you be interested in protecting United States? This seems to be another edit war going no where with the "Fox News crowd." 172 19:37, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Admin Nomination[edit]

Hello, I would appreciate your help by earning your vote as an admin. I have been here about 5 months now and have been nominated. I have made many contributions and have improved on my editing and behavior. I take this seriously, that is why I have gotten into it with Anthony so much. You can look at my user page yourself and see my contribtions. I would appreciate a vote in the yes column if you agree. Again, thanks for your time and help. ChrisDJackson 02:34, 13 Apr 2004 (UTC)

AMA co-ordinator election is now on[edit]

You may now vote for user:Ed_Poor or user:Alex756 in the first ever AMA co-ordinator election. Follow the instructions on Wikipedia:AMA Coordinator Election Procedure for more details.

AMA members who wish to abstain from voting must also e-mail wikipedia_ama_voting@yahoo.co.uk with notice of that intent.

To clarify anything before voting, ask user_talk:Zanimum or user_talk:Jwrosenzweig on their talk pages.

AMA members have until April 30, at 11:00:00 EST to vote. -- user:zanimum

treecat[edit]

Secret,

I have essentially run out of anything more to add at treecat that won't give everything away. As an early contributor, you might want to cast an eye over it to see if there's anything I've missed.

Mediation[edit]

The arbitration committee has referred the issues of Anthony's reverts and alleged trolling to the mediation committee. If you would like to be involved in mediation on these issues please leave a message at Wikipedia:Requests for mediation. I am cross-posting this message to all those who commented at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Anthony DiPierro and to Anthony. Regards -- sannse (talk) 21:43, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC) (mediation committee).

Timeout[edit]

I was just getting worried as you weren't editing for some time. Hope you're OK and will be back soon. I certainly miss you here. --Wik 18:04, Apr 26, 2004 (UTC)

I also hope a break will find you refreshed and back here soon. Though we don't edit the same articles very often, I have enjoyed reading your contributions. —Morven 18:22, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I don't know, who you are and what you are. But, I remember, I have seen your username often. So, please come back soon. Let the world be benefitted more out of your work/service. Thanks. --Rrjanbiah 18:34, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

You are of great benefit and worth here, and I'm sorry that so often we forget to say these things until an editor gets "pushed over the edge". I have been in different articles than you for some time and hadn't noticed an increased problem with Americentrism. When you return, if there's anything I (an American, admittedly) can do to help you or to help a specific article, please don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks very much for all your hard work, Jwrosenzweig 20:53, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I agree with much of what you said on the mailing list, Wikipedia seems to favor a MDC/Western/American/anti-socialist bias towards the LDC/Southern/Eastern/socialist world. You will be missed, hope to see you back here in good time. --H CHENEY 01:49, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Please don't come back. There is already enough anti-Americanism here. anthony (see warning) 01:52, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Please don't be so immature Anthony. Secretlondon was an extremely valuable contributor, certainly not "anti-American". -- user:zanimum

AMA Coordinator election closing[edit]

This "form letter"-style notice is being sent to you, to notify you that voting for AMA Coordinator will close at April 30, at 16:00:00 UTC, a little over 48.5 hours from the time this message was posted on your talk page. If you do not vote, following the instructions at Wikipedia:AMA Coordinator Election Procedure, your vote will be void. Contrary to concern, members who abstain from voting and notify the Inspectors of the Election, as well as members who abstain from voting and do not notify the Inspectors of the Election, will still be AMA full members. -- user:zanimum

Thanks for voting! -- user:zanimum

Hi. I've found this from the Ministry of Defence link and link which appears to show that it is okay for some things and not for others.

Permission for those under waiver scheme which covers:

  • Press Notices
  • Forms
  • Consultative documents
  • Documents featured on official MoD websites (unless notice to the contrary appears)
  • Published papers of a scientific, technical or medical nature (although some restrictions apply)
  • Headline statistics
  • Texts of ministerial speeches and articles
  • Unpublished public records
  • Typographical arrangements

Not permission for:

  • Crests, e.g. Regimental crests. Some photographs will cost £50 to reproduce.

edit wars[edit]

There has been an edit war over Cambodia related pages, especially Khmer Rouge, but also Pol Pot, Democratic Kampuchea, History of Cambodia, and Cambodia. I'm accused of being a denier of this or that, and they can't even get their own sources straight (they say 2 million people died between 1975-1979 - the popular 2 million figure, which comes from the anti-CPK Ponchaud, does not start at 1975 though but earlier - in other words, they're misquoting what an anti-Khmer Rouge source said, I'm sure more out of ignorance than malice since they know little about the topic it seems). Khmer Rouge had the longest tug-of-war so I suggested discussion of all five pages go there since they're mostly on the same issue (number of deaths etc.) Anyhow perhaps you may want to look at this page and perhaps the other four and see what you think if you want to. please stay message[edit]

I saw your distressing message to Wik. You are a valuable contributor to wikipedia and will be sorely missed should you go. Do not let trolls or American males (like myself) drive you off. The trend which you seem to be a part of is very disheartening. Without people like you the project will deteroriate (or continue to do so) and all that will be left will be morons and trolls or a combination of the two. Please stay and help wiki grow more so that the opinions you feel dominate wikipedia will not succeed or at least be more balanced (or counter-balanced). Remember allot of other people from around the world will view the wiki and use it as a source to gather knowledge. thanks. ;) GrazingshipIV 01:09, May 8, 2004 (UTC)

I too hope your departure will only be temporary. Taking a break is good, but you will be sorely missed by many, including myself :) Dysprosia 01:17, 8 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

goodbye message[edit]

Nah, you're probably right to leave. I totally get what you're talking about. Wikip(a)edia is an American project and always will be. The rest of us will just be ground down by the bastards until we give up. We might as well give up now. — Chameleon 09:33, 12 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've cheered up. — Chameleon 09:53, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Secret — It saddens me to hear that you have such low opinions of us Americans. I'm sorry that you are choosing to leave, and I hope someday you'll come back to us. I wish you all the best. →Raul654 15:27, May 13, 2004 (UTC)

Please come back. If you do, I'll try to back you up much more promptly from now on. I'm sorry for being too slow to respond in the past. 172 17:38, 13 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you feel able to come back. Its worth having the arguments, because people do regard Wikipedia as an NPOV — or even a leftist(!) site - and it's not guaranteed that right-wingers will always dominate. Where there are debates going on, please tell me — and a much broader range of contributors - I'll be happy to jump in. All the best, Warofdreams 17:44, 13 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

You're missed. I hope you feel you can return. As always, please consider the services of this American at your disposal, if it will help at all -- I try not to be US-centric, and am willing to learn. Great! Welcome back and happy editing! 172 18:22, 13 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

It is good that you've decided to stay with us, evem if you won't be editing in quite the same way as before. It is so hard to know what to do when one sees a systematic bias in Wikipedia, in any direction. Still, oher encyclopedias are biased too, and that does not make them worthless. One keeps adding facts, I guess, in the hope that eventually facts overwhelm the weasel words and barely disguised opinions. Martin 21:07, 13 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

In need of community support[edit]

I'm in need of community support.

Right now, I am on the verge of being driven away from Wikipedia through the relentless efforts of a single problem user on Wikipedia:Requests for comment/172, Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration, and Wikipedia talk:Requests for arbitration/172 vs VeryVerily.

The same user who refuses to accept the results of the Augusto Pinochet poll (see also [1]) goes through my user history every time he logs on and then starts reverting things that I've written arbitrary. He manages to divert attention away from the articles onto ad hominem attacks, thus poisoning the well against me. [2]

He has been doing nothing else for the past couple of months, other than making some minor changes to pages that he finds through the random page feature. Meanwhile, I've been working on articles such as Empire of Brazil, Dollar Diplomacy, and Franco-U.S. relations. I'm tired of letting a problem user define my contributions to the encyclopedia, as opposed to my work.

I may have said some regrettable things in the past, but my editing practices are scholarly and methodical. When I make an edit, my choice is based on a consideration of the quality of the encyclopedia. Unlike the user who avowedly admits to trying to escalate a personal feud (see, e.g., [3]), I do not decide which pages to edit and what changes to make on the basis of personality feuds, emotional POV whims, or a desire to get attention.

Although this user shows little evidence that he understands the content of the articles, I have shown considerable restraint, given my professional expertise. [4]. Only through community support (i.e. lobbying the arbitration committee)will this user be stopped. Otherwise, Wikipedia will die unless we stop vandals and clueless POV-pushers from running rampant and driving away valued contributors.

Please feel free to direct questions and comments to my talk page or e-mail at sokolov47@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

172 01:43, 30 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Banana Republicans: Great title, don't you think? -- Viajero 18:37, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I'll take a look at Kirchner. As for Peronism, it is an incredibly complex topic; even Argentines can be at a loss to describe it adequately, partly because it evolved in such bizarre ways since the death of Peron. Yep, I am still here, but I did get burned out battling the forces of reaction, hence I keep a low profile and work, for the most part, on other stuff, which isn't necessarily a completely satisfying arrangement. -- Viajero 18:52, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

article on VfD[edit]

Hi again, I don't know whether you still have the stomach for controversy, but I stumbled across this article tonight: Media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It is by far the worst thing I have ever seen here; truly shameful. I added it to VfD? Care to weigh in? -- Viajero 22:47, 9 Jun 2004 (UTC)

article on Zhuang[edit]

You wrote that Zhuang was the name of two Tai languages, one in China and one in Vietnam. I've never heard of a language called Zhuang being spoken in Vietnam. The Tày and Nùng of Vietnam live just across the border and I've read that Nùng is similar to Zhuang (but many Tai languages are similar); there is a minority called Bố Y - they are Bouyei who came from China, some of them in Vietnam (in Lào Cai) even don't speak Bouyei but Chinese.

The terms you use - Northern Zhuang and Southern Zhuang - seem rather confusing to me. Does "Northern Zhuang" include Bouyei? And what is actually "Southern Zhuang"? Babelfisch, June 11th 2004

Lord Scarman[edit]

Hi, you wrote on Lord Scarman that he was a "crossbench member". Not to be the dirty American, but would you mind explaining that term in the article? I looked at House of Lords but it wasn't all that helpful. Thanks, [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 20:43, 15 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Vandalism in progress[edit]

I have no idea what your comment meant. RickK 23:59, Jun 15, 2004 (UTC)

You said it was Wik - and it wasn't - Wik is in Germany, the vandal bot is in the US. Perhaps you should leave Wik alone? Secretlondon 00:01, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)
In other words if I were to use a German proxy I'd be just fine? - Hephaestos|§ 00:04, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Caroline, I just want to mention that it's wonderful to see you back here. Rick may be hasty, but you have to admit that, if Wik threatens to attack us with proxies, he can't complain much if an attack ensues and he is blamed. I have no idea if it's possible for him to use US proxies from Germany -- you may well be absolutely correct that it isn't him. The only thing I'd say is that someone who threatens violent actions is going to make themselves a likely suspect. Once again, very good to see your name in RC (a shame it has to be under such odd circumstances). Jwrosenzweig 00:06, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)
In the email RickK quoted, Wik explicitly said "I'll start a script which does everything automatically including changing proxies as needed" (emphasis mine), so the fact that he is in Germany and the vandalism is happening from a US IP address hardly seems like evidence of his innocence. I'm not saying it is Wik (I've never had any contact with him, don't really know anything about him), but I figured I should point this out. —Stormie 04:11, Jun 16, 2004 (UTC)

I have never seen a single comment indicating that Wik is in Germany. Can you prove that? RickK 04:24, Jun 16, 2004 (UTC)

IRC IP address was in Germany. Secretlondon 04:29, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Categories About Politicians[edit]

I just noticed the categories yesterday, so I am still getting used to how they work, but I think that the election results category would be a good place to list articles about elections (for example Malawi general election, 2004). For actual politicians, there could be a Category: Politicians, but there are so many politicians that it would be too big. It could be separated by country (for example, Category: Politicians from Belgium). The big problem with listing the biographies under election results is that not all politicians are elected! Most kings and military dictators could not go there. Academic Challenger 02:56, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I'm sorry[edit]

That you don't feel you can edit here because of witch-hunts. Certainly there are things about this place that get under my skin, but I've found that it's still satisfying for me to contribute knowledge to the little corners of this site that remain unfilled. I hope you are finding similar happiness somwhere, but confess a selfish hope (on behalf of this site) that you will continue to find your way back to us here. We don't have enough sensible editors and admins that we can afford to lose them willy-nilly, and we need respectable voices of dissent also -- I always thought of you as perhaps the best of these. I hope to see you around on occasion, Jwrosenzweig 15:49, 16 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I started filling this category out, but quickly realised it will be insane when all done (I guess we have well over a thousand articles that could go there.) Any suggestions on how I should split it into subcategories? Morwen - Talk 19:28, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Arghh.[edit]

Hi, Secret. An anon just recreated the article of the woman who lodged the rape complaint against that philandering basketball player. I think this has been discussed before, and I thought there was a decision not to do this, but [1] I'm not sure, and [2] not sure what to do if that's the case. I also seem to remember that you were involved with the discussion earlier. Any thoughts? - Nunh-huh 22:34, 17 Jun 2004 (UTC)

"Spam protection filter" blocking users who add categories[edit]

I appear to be auto-blocked from editing articles after adding a batch of "category" messages in appropriate articles. I get a "Spam protection filter" message (apparently something automated that blocks users who add the same text on a certain number of articles in a row?).

I can't do anything while logged in (nor apparently on my usual isp), and on this unlogged in alternative account I don't seem to be able to edit "Village Pump" or other usual places to ask about it. If you could either check on this or bring this up somewhere appropriate to get folks attention I would much appreciate it. -- 4.230.234.30 20:58, 18 Jun 2004 (UTC)

RfC Action[edit]

Secretlondon, I frankly don't understand your motivation in bringing an action against me on a point I had already conceded being a misunderstanding, and said I would leave be, which should have been considered a resolution of the dispute, if there was any. I not that as Bureaucrat, you mistakenly promoted OldakQuill a full day early. Have you made an attempt to resolve that? -- Cecropia | Talk 02:13, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Nice pics[edit]

A couple of hints (by a very amateur "photographer" who just started using a camera):

  • I would use the viewfinder (instead of the LCD) as that makes it easier to have the images line up horizontally
  • Fiddle with the ISO and exposure settings (if it's possible with your camera) when it's too dark or too bright so you get better lighting
  • Try not to get too close (so they're not cropped) to buildings or too far (so you won't have to use the zoom).
  • On close up of small items, (if your camera supports it) I would use the burst mode and move up and down with the manual focus so that you can get a clear image of the item.

Love the pictures Dori | Talk 17:21, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

VfD page[edit]

Hi - Something is puzzling me: Every time I take a look at VfD I find quite a percentage of red links there, e.g. Superlevure (how is one to vote on something which is empty / has already been emptied). Would you have a ready explanation for that? --Palapala 19:26, 2004 Jun 30 (UTC)

Orphaned pages[edit]

Another one (I know I'm curious): How does a page turn up on the list of orphaned pages, what's the criterion? Some of them look quite innocent to me, e.g. pilot (disamb page), rider on the rain (redirect page), Joyce Summers (regular page), etc. -Palapala 09:27, 2004 Jul 1 (UTC)

As I read you are interested in Lesser used languages in Europe, I would like to invite you to join my learning project, which is mainly about languages, among them catalan - more widely spoken than some official EU languages. The project is discussed on my talk page.
I also saw that someone congratulated you for getting "libdem" pictures here. Do you have any idea of how to get pictures of war victims? I find it disgusting that we have pictures of the toppling of the Saddam statue and of so much from the military and even a terrorist propaganda beheading but nothing of those most affected by the wars, such as those crippled in wars or those kept in Guantanamo. Excellent. Had forgotten about those pages; I was already contemplating going through my edit history to find the (missing) pictures. - snoyes 00:26, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

As a matter of interest, why did you remove the Google link from the Sisters article? I put it in because it seemed the easiest way of generating links to all the local chapters and there doesn't appear to be such a link on the Sisters' main site. No big deal either way, just wondered if it's policy not to have links to Google searches, even when they might actually be useful. :o)  — OwenBlacker 10:43, Jul 4, 2004 (UTC)

Socialist vs Trotskyist party Categories[edit]

I get your point, but doesn't this subdivision suggest that Trotskyist parties are not Socialist? A lot of people won't be familiar with the concept of Trotskyism. I find it also a bit problematic to define (left wing) parties that are neither Communist nor Social Democratic as "socialist".Maybe it would be better to make "socialist" one large category and then define trotskyist, social-democratic, maoist, marxist-leninist etc subcategories - thanks god anarchists don't form parties... Sorry, maybe I just haven't got my head around the categorisation stuff, and it's a bit difficult with the whole ecosystem of far-left sects in this country...(in which category would you put the SLP? ML, communist, socialist?) pir 21:44, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Also, category:Trotskyist organisations is not a sub-category of category:Political parties by ideology, which means people aren't going to find them if they start with that latter category. pir 21:53, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Shaver sockets[edit]

Since I'm not in the UK, and you seem to like taking photos, could you perhaps take one of a UK shaver socket?

Thanks for your support[edit]

I just wanted to thank you for your support in my recent nomination to become an administrator. I really appreciate it. blankfaze | •• | •• 14:46, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed your vote in the previous VfD on Poland's betrayal by the Western Allies and wanted to let you know that I have reopened the issue and wish for you to please cast your vote at VfD--naryathegreat 23:41, Jul 6, 2004 (UTC)

Hey Secret: Thanks for reading the article I originated. It always flatters me to know people are reading the articles I begin.

I think it is an encyclopedic article because , as I explained on the talk page, being that the deaths ocurred in the home of a celebrity, it could (and probably will) become a big case.

Keep up the good work. By the way, my dad says hi.

Thanks and God bless you!

Sincerely yours, "Antonio London Life Rules, Baby! Martin"

Categories in Tree of Life articles[edit]

You might want to check out Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tree of Life. Although the discussion has staled, we're pretty much in serious disagreement as to (a) use categories at all and (b) implement them along taxonomic lines, common grouping lines, or both. So your addition of Category:Penguins is a bit premature. - UtherSRG 22:00, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Actually I'm pro-category now... however, I'm very interested in being methodical about it. There are too many unanswred questions about how to implement categories for ToL articles, a I pointed out on the Project talk page. I'm going to post there again soon, outlining my current thoughts. - UtherSRG 22:58, 12 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for intervening. I'm glad to see that the discussion has been de-politicized at Category talk:Cold War people. 172 07:32, 15 Jul 2004 (UTC)

felix draeseke pages[edit]

hi - i see you black listed the draeseke entry. i am also the webmaster for the draeseke society; could you please provide the evidence you would like to see? thanks

Hello, I'm FWBOarticle[edit]

Hi, are you the AMA for FWBO entry?

Oh, i.c. Anyway, can you advice me how I should respond to Mr. Nobody who keep deleting my section? I don't have problem with mahalabba any more.

Isn't anal intercourse a form of sexual intercourse?[edit]

That's how I originally meant to deal with that section of Sexual slang, but in my latest edit(s) I forgot, since 'Anal intercourse' was not a subtopic of 'Sexual intercourse'. I suppose we should do it this way:

  • Sexual intercourse
brief preamble here
  • Vaginal intercourse
all current 'Sexual intercourse' terms here
  • Anal intercourse
'Anal intercourse' terms here

Whadya think? - dcljr 04:38, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Please see my comments on the above page. I'm not trying to be sarcastic or anything, you and Andrewa just have me totally, completely confused. I don't understand what you mean by saying that false information can't be deleted. RickK 05:47, Jul 17, 2004 (UTC)

Neutrality admin poll[edit]

Hi Secretlondon, I didn't see all that fuss about my vote in Neutrality's admin nomination until just now. Since the poll is closed now, I have now explained my reasons for voting against Neutrality here [5] ; and here [6]. Thanks a lot for defending me against the "troll" accusation! I'm pretty amazed by how people use that term to abuse anyone they disagree with, and I really hope admins' power won't increase in the future and that they will become more accountable.pir 11:02, 17 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Photo copyright status[edit]

Thanks for fixingall the tags. I'll be more careful in the future. BTW, I claimed a stamp as fair use: Image:Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Musa al-Khwarizmi.jpg. Would you suggest another tag? If so, just edit the image, it's on my watchlist. Thanks -- Chris 73 | Talk 10:40, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Photo copyrights - Nevilley[edit]

Hi, I see you have been having a sort-out, for example Barbican-tube-from-road-bri.jpg and City-road-former-tube-stn.jpg. Thanks. Unfortunately I will not be around much, indeed probably not at all, so I am not going to be able to update the status of all the photos I have taken. I was delighted to see that for one photo you assumed GFDL - in fact, please feel free to add this license to any photo uploaded by me if you ever come across any. I wouldn't like them to be deleted becase of this uncertainty, if they are potentially of use to the encyclopaedia. I have left a note on my user page specifically licensing these images under the GFDL and I hope this helps. Thanks, best wishes, and goodbye. Neville --Nevilley 11:10, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind comments. Neville --Nevilley 12:37, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)

WikiProject Unrecognized Countries[edit]

Hi, Secretlondon. I noticed you had made contributions to Abkhazia. If you're interested in Abkhazia and similar places, why don't you drop by the WikiProject Unrecognized countries and help add some more depth to Wikipedia's coverage of these?

Be sure to visit the Project talk page, and if you are interested, you can become a member. Ambivalenthysteria 12:10, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)
