This page should probably redirect to Wikipedia:Translation into English. Any objections? -- Itai 18:36, 19 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! - There is no presumption that English will be either of the languages translated - Gaz 00:29, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. An objection. Heard about those. Fluffy little things with butterfly wings, I was told. Eat cows. Or not. Tired. Anyway, now that I re-read the project page, I see your point - this project is about assisting Wikipedians, as opposed to assisting Wikipedia. Fair enough, and worthwhile. All that is needed is to clarify this and provide a link to Wikipedia:Translation into English, which I will shortly do in the bluntest way possible (you might wish to refine this). I'll even add myself. (Incidentally, if you're interested in this sort of things, Freelang.net - of which I'm a registered translator - offers free human translation.) -- Itai 02:45, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Also, you might wish to reconsider using a table - this is tempting, I know, but will make it impossible to alphabetically machine-sort the entries. It probably isn't wise to link every occurrence of a given language to its Wikipedia article either. "1st language", by the way, might be too ambiguous. "Native language" is probably preferable. I'm awfully cheerful today, aren't I? It's not my fault you ate my cow. -- Itai 02:52, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any reason this is not on Meta. I can't see how it relates to the English Wikipedia rather than cross-language. Angela. 07:51, May 20, 2004 (UTC)

It must be brain fade, but I did go looking for existing pages and completely missed Wikipedia:Translation into English and m:Translators :-(

What can I say... DOH! - But to my point...

I really wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel for a third time. I would consider making this page into a redirect to Wikipedia:Translation into English except that it is only half about listing people who will translate. The other half is about translation tasks awaiting a volunteer. Would it make sense to go the other way? Should we consider cutting Wikipedia:Translation into English in two, leaving the top half under the existing name and moving the list of translators to Wikipedia:Wikipedians/Translators. Of course there would be mutual cross-linking needed. The current format on Wikipedia:Translation into English would be fine.

Addressing Angela's question, I think if we keep this as a "to-English" and/or "from-English" concept then it is fine to keep in on en.wikipedia.org. I also think we should encourage each translator to list him/her self on the "other" language equivalent page and on m:Translators - Gaz 11:20, 20 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I can see your point for keeping it here, but I was worried about duplication. For example, if someone can translate English<>German, they shouldn't have to list themselves both here and on the equivalent German page. I think separating the list of translators from the list of articles needing translation could be useful though. Angela. 00:37, May 21, 2004 (UTC)
My reasoning is that they may be/feel competent to translate from German to English and not be/feel competent to translate from English to German. This way they can list on page and not list on the other. - Gaz 02:17, 21 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that makes sense. Angela. 03:18, May 21, 2004 (UTC)

Anything which SIMPLIFIES the translation process is good. I'm trying to get to grips with it and now have a headache and am really confused!
