Hi Topbanana, was it you who redirected Great Glen to Glen Albyn? Either way, how about changing it back? I've never heard this name used for anything other than a whisky (and I'm from Fort William), and I couldn't find it in a list of glens either. Even if it is used, the Great Glen (also An Gleann Mor in Gaelic) is by far the more common name. Eoghan 23:54, 5 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy Eoghan, nice to have someone questioning this stuff. To be perfectly honest I wasn't overly sure about the naming of these three (Albyn, Mor and Great) myself. I was under the impression that Glen Mor was just the southwestern end of the Great Glen (branching from Glen Nevis at Aonach Mor). Glen Albyn is obviously roman and seems to refer to the whole valley from Inverness to Fort William - I suspect the only source of clues might by Herodotus. The Great Glen is definately a modern moniker, I can't find it in use before the 19th century - it could be coincidental with the Caledonian Canal (1822).

How is Glen Albyn obviously Roman... it looks like an Anglicised form of something like Scottish Gaelic Gleann Albain, "Glen of Scotland" or "Scotland's Glen", which would be fitting for something so large, eh?

Can you describe to me how you understand the three names/glens to relate please? Between us we can hopefully produce something coherent. -

I am just putting together some info for a interpretation board and have noticed that the diagram and article are suggesting that the NW of the Great Glen moved North East. I think that it did make a small movement in this direction but the majority of the movement of the North West Highlands was actually south west. I have talked to several local geologists and checked other sites and it does seem that this is the case. (daviebeag - 20 June 2006)

Surely Great Glen is not sensibly separated from Great Glen Fault in an encyclopedia. How can one receive encyclopedic coverage without t'other? --Wetman 05:34, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
