Etymology[edit]

Are the islands named after Mary Magdalene? --Menchi 03:04, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Apparently named after the wife of the island owner. Added to the article. --Menchi (talk) 02:08, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Scots dialect[edit]

Is it true, that a Scots dialect is spoken here ? http://www.linguasphere.net mentions Madeleine Scots. Sarcelles 06:01, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Urgent Help For What?[edit]

Can someone clear up why they needed urgent help in 1910?

Translation of names[edit]

Just returned from Les Iles and find that this article certainly could be cleaned up -- perhaps the article in French is more detailed. I'm wondering about the translation of names. All place names on the islands are in french only (per Quebec policy and general usage). Although they may have english equivalents, they aren't normally used. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mks113 (talkcontribs) 12:48, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Coffin's Island, or Isle Royale, is the largest of the Magdalens, according to various gazetteers. --Wetman (talk) 03:16, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Au contraire, mon ami... English names are very much used by the English community on the islands! The fact that the government of Québec does not use them should not be seen as "not normally used." I believe that the use of English names is very much appropriate in an English-language article.QuebecoisTheologian (talk) 03:18, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How it formed and how it contributed to the little ice age of 1600's[edit]

The space rock smaller than the one that impacted Hudson Bay, might have impacted the Iles de la madeleine, which contributes to the deepest parts of Hudson Bay, Hudson strait st. lawrence river, the great lakes the location of Newfound Land; and separation of landmass called Meta Incognita from Quebec more specifically Ungava Bay. This impact also explains the James Bay rift formation.

The Impact created a flood, which became ice, and while the dust still settled, water froze, and now, the glaciers are the remains of this ice age. Also, the "New Madrid Seismic Zone" might be the result of this impact. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Arviatlands (talkcontribs) 16:56, 31 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Magdalen Islands"?[edit]

I'm not sure if this is the name used by the Anglophone locals, or in what context it's normally seen, but as an Anglophone Maritimer I have never before heard the phrase "Magdalen Islands", only ever "Les Îles de la Madeleine". In tourist brochures, on maps, and in general parlance they are universally Les Îles, at least around these parts. I can't imagine things are much different in Quebec. In what cases are they called the Magdalen Islands? I am proposing a name change to the Francophone name of the island, as it is much more commonly used even in English contexts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.166.9.237 (talk) 01:17, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing Miꞌkmaꞌki[edit]

Right now the wikipedia entry says "The islands are part of the homeland territories, or Mi'kma'ki, of the Mi'kmaw Nation who call the islands Menagoesenog."

As near as I can tell all the atlantic provinces are part of the Miꞌkmaꞌki, but they way the article for the Magdalen Islands talks about it implies that it has some special status distinct from say PEI or Nova Scotia. I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but is it possible to change the description to be more in-line with how it's handled for other atlantic provinces? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.162.185.69 (talk) 16:10, 22 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Former RCM home?[edit]

Did the former municipalities that consist of the current Urban agglomeration of Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine (being Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Grosse-Île) corresponded to a former regional county municipality (or RCM) before becoming a territory equivalent to a regional county municipality (or TE)? jlog3000 (talk) 16:39, 22 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
