Source for Qui-Gon's birth[edit]

What was the source for establishing the year of Qui-Gon's birth? I find it difficult to believe that he was 60 years old in The Phantom Menace, and that he was Padawan to a Master only 10 years older than he.

Also, in the section "Physical Appearance" the notion "forty-year old Qui-Gon Jinn" is used, indicating strongly that he was this age in The Phantom Menace. However, this is a contradiction to the birth year stated above, which would make him 60 years old at that time. Either there is a mistake in the article which needs to get cleared up, or the section should be re-written to make it more comprehensible.

The Phantom Menace Novel states that Qui-Gon is nearing 60. He must look so young because he gets lots of exercise. But if you ask me he looks to be about 55 so 60 doesn't seem to far off.

Present/Future conflict[edit]

OK, I admit it. I have NO IDEA WHATSOEVER what this means: "(the Republic Senate is delayed in procedure to prevent future backlash at the expense of any present situation leading to the escalation of Chancellor Palpatine)." Can someone explain what it means to me, or better yet, rewrite it for clarity? Nandesuka

I figured out what the original editor, who wrote that line, was meaning. Hopefully my version is clearer. However I'm not so sure whether he was right in what he was suggesting. Yes the Senate is being manipulated into putting Palpatine into the Chancellor position and then further being manipulated into giving him extraordinary powers. But I'm not sure whether they are being "delayed in procedure" to stop them removing the position and powers, as I think User;128.233.16.240 was suggesting. I'll leave it for someone else to decide. Re-write?[edit]

Anyone else think this article could use a re-write? It seems sloppily put together and not totally comprehensive.

I agree. It should atleast be written like the other articles about Star Wars characters. They talk about his actions, and go indepth. I was hoping, when I read this, to learn about Qui-Gon's past.
We can't write about Jinn's past if there is nearly no information about it Ariakas 14:32, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, we could use the Jedi Apprentice young-adult novels as reference for his past. They tell quite a bit. The Wookieepedian 11:16, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Jinn in Islamic Mythology?[edit]

Just some minor edits required for that sentence. Jinns are spirits in the Islamic religion. However, they are not dessert spirits and Islam does not have a mythology (neither does any religion). Great job overall.

  • Gah! Jinn are certainly not dessert spirits! :P There are no spirits in my ice-cream cone. You mean "desert". Sorry, nitpicking. But that made me laugh. --71.52.235.26 19:55, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I heard somewhere that "Qui-Gon" alludes to "quickly gone", as he dies early on in the series. Similar to "Obi-Wan" alluding to "obedient one" etc. 220.76.15.248 (talk) 18:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From the Wiki article entitled "Jinn": "Jinn (Arabic: الجن‎‎, al-jinn), also romanized as djinn or anglicized as genies (with the more broad meaning of demons),[1] are supernatural creatures in early Arabian and later Islamic mythology and theology." --Chachap (talk) 09:23, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Liam reportedly disliking working on Phantom Menace, etc.[edit]

Long before I read this article and the section about Liam Neeson being unhappy on the set of The Phantom Menace I remember watching an interview of him just before the film was shown. Here, he described that he about called it quits and retiring from movie-making because he wasn't prepared for the physical demands of portraying a Jedi, and this was interpreted as the reason why he "disliked" being on the set. I have forgotten whether it was E! News Daily or Entertainment Tonight that did the interview. This contrasts, however, with this other news report which states his unhappiness with movies in general and not specifically Star Wars.

I have added a "citation needed" link with what I wrote, because I know for sure that the interview exists but I do not know from where; anybody who knows, please kindly supply the citation.

May violate copyright[edit]

The Overview section is almost identical to the entry in Star Wars databank.

journal of the whills?[edit]

I was doing to fixing on this article and ran across mention of Qui-Gon using the "Journal of the Whills" to strengthen his faith in the Jedi or something like that (details aren't important at the moment). I know that JotW was part of the original title of Episode IV way back, and I believe it was also mentioned exactly once in the novelization for Ep IV, in a manner reminiscent of Tolkien's "Red Book".

Given this history of the term, plus the fact that I have never heard of such a storyline (Qui-Gon reading the journal that is), not to mention that the reference seemed to me to be, well, silly, I removed it for being fanfic.

However, I haven't been reading the EU lately, so it's entirely possible that it was in the newer stuff (although I've read all of the books referenced here aside from the 2002 characters guide). If I did make a mistake, could someone cite/reference it, at least here in the talk, so that I (or anyone else) don't make that mistake again?

Cheers! :) --DarthBinky 21:35, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An error![edit]

As I was reading this article I noticed something that was...well...incorrect. Quote: Qui-Gon's first Padawan was Quinlan Vos. This isn't true; the identity of Qui-Gon's first apprentice is unknown. Also, according to Wookiepedia (and most likely other sources too) Quinlan Vos was born in 59 BBY, making him only two years older than Obi-Wan. So it would be impossible for Quinlan Vos to be Qui-Gon's first Padawan. Could someone please correct this? Thank you!

Qui Gon after death[edit]

Any more views we could add about what happened to Qui gon After death? someone must have drawn something from a quote in episode where Yoda told Obi-Wan that there was a way to communicate with his master.

reorganized and added biography[edit]

Okay i've taken the liberty to add alot to this article and revamp it as it was quite small for what was known about this character i've also added some photo's to illistrate some of the key points i need help however to whomever wishes to lend a hand there still need to be links to other pages within the text as i dont have all the time in the world to do the whole page myself i'd much appreciate any improvements. danieljackson 19:29, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Plagiarism![edit]

Okay, someone just copied the entire Qui-Gon Jinn article on Wookieepedia, changed it all to present-tense, and put it here. I don't think people are supposed to do that! Could someone please revert it or something? --76.5.170.196 23:14, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In-universe[edit]

Anyone seriously interested in improving the article should consider adding some real world related info, e.g. regarding the concept, creation, and/or function of the character within the Star Wars narrative etc. Please consult our writing about fiction guideline, which also includes a list of exemplary articles.

There are currently three featured articles on Star Wars characters: Palpatine, Padmé Amidala, and Jabba the Hutt. What sets them aside from most of the other SW character articles is the effort to write from the real world perspective. Pay particular attention to paragraphs like Jabba the Hutt#Concept and creation, Palpatine#Concept and creation, and Padmé Amidala#Characterization.

Also take a look at Darth Vader, which despite its lack of reliable, published third-party secondary sources features interesting sections on e.g. #Character creation and concepts and Darth Vader as a #Cultural figure.

Even though reliable sources may be tough to come up with, any effort to introduce coherently written real world aspects will be greatly appreciated, because it contributes to the depth of the article and accurate coverage of the topic, and thereby makes for an improved reading experience and increases the encyclopedic value of the article.

*ahem*[edit]

Quote from the article: ... Soon Xanatos becomes Qui-Gon's first apprentice. The visual guide to The Phantom Menace states that Qui-Gon did have an apprentice before Xanatos and that he trained him to knighthood, but there are no other sources to this so it is presumed that this information is false.

Now let me refer you to the official Star Wars Databank. It says here [1]: Qui-Gon Jinn was long hesitant to take on a Padawan learner, given his failure with his second student. (emphasis mine)

If it's on that website, it's canon. There was an apprentice before Xanatos. Just thought I should mention that. Someone ought to fix the article. :) --76.5.172.10 19:35, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon) mispronounce Republic Credit name?[edit]

I don't know where else to ask this - but every time I've watched the movie, I swear Qui-Gon says "I have 20,000 [DAK-tair-eez]" instead of Dataries. (Note the "K" sound like Dactyl). Did he say it wrong? Or are we writing it wrong?

Origin of character name??[edit]

I just came across the Chinese word: "Qigong 气功 or 氣功," which is a holistic system of coordinated body posture and movement, breathing, and meditation used for health, spirituality, and martial arts training. With roots in Chinese medicine, philosophy, and martial arts, qigong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance qi (chi), translated as "life energy … qigong allows access to higher realms of awareness, awakens one's "true nature", and helps develop human potential". What are the odds that Uncle George DIDN'T intentionally pair this together with the Arabic word for Genie ("Jinn") when naming this Jedi master. --Chachap (talk) 10:03, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Found a published source that comes to the same conclusion, so I'm putting it in the article --Chachap (talk) 10:05, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
