Merger with Constituent Countries[edit]

I've removed the notice for this article to be merged with Constituent Countries, as the two terms mean different things. Home Nations includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Constituent Countries includes only England, Scotland and Wales. There doesn't seem to be any case to answer for a merger. If anyone disagrees, feel free to add the merge notice back and start a discussion.

A collective term used by the British government and sporting regulators[edit]

The lead in this article on [18 May 2011] stated:

Home Nations is a collective term with one of two meanings depending on context. Politically it means the nations of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). In sport, if a sport is governed by a council representing the island of Ireland, such as the Irish Rugby Football Union, the term can refer to the nations of the constituent countries on the island of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and the Irish nation

It has evolved until it now states:

The terms Home Nations and Home Countries are used in administration of sport

However "Home Nations" is also used by HMG in contexts other than sport, which means that the inference of the statement (used only in sport is invalid). See examples in the see also section at the head of this section; and a Google search on '"Home nation" site:gov.uk' which returns other examples eg:

Treorchy crowned "UK's best" in the Great British High Street Awards: "Eight high streets, 2 from each Home Nation, also won awards..."
Archive Service Accreditation: "Assessments are undertaken by a trained assessor from the home nation assessor body..."
Guidance Higher education for service children: "Where an applicant’s family have not established a permanent residence in one of the home nations, and are living overseas or in the home nation on a posting"

Also here is an exaple from the UK parliament (site:parliament.uk):

Brexit and Agriculture in Northern Ireland Contents: Introduction: The agriculture sector in Northern Ireland: "78% of all farms in Northern Ireland are cattle and sheep farms; the home nation with the next highest proportion of such farms is England with 44%."

PBS, I too am bemused to read that it is used "in sport" and surprised to find this article a separate one to Countries of the United Kingdom. The limiting qualification and scope of "in sport" seems wrong to me, and the sources you've found show it's far from limited to sport. GPinkerton (talk) 09:17, 2 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
