Netscape 8[edit]

This needs to be updated for Netscape 8.0 - anyone? --The Human Spellchecker 19:22, Jun 3, 2005 (UTC)

It is already covered in Netscape Browser. --minghong 08:48, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Proposed merge[edit]

Please see Talk:Netscape/Archives/2012#Names and version numbers. – Smyth\talk 14:32, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Instead of merging as your proposal, it would be better to merge Netscape 6 back to this article, since versions 6 and 7 are very similar. Anyway this is only my personal opinion. --minghong
Yes, I agree with Minghong in that at least Netscape 6 and Netscape 7 should be covered by the same article. There is not much point in having distinct entries about them. --Jonik 22:15, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the merge tag. It has been around for long enough. It seems to me that it was a confusion based on the fact the netscape is both a company and a web browser by that company. In any event it doesn't make sence to merge just one of the five web browsers by netscape into netscape. Either merge them all or none. Jon513 11:29, 25 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A Technical Inaccuracy[edit]

Perhaps this is pedantic, but the section on Netscape 8 is technically incorrect in that it says the browser has the IE Trident engine "built in". The engine is actually a part of Windows, so I think it might be better to say that Netscape 8 "accesses" or "interfaces with" the engine. Sergeirichard 10:01, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

article title[edit]

Why is an article titled "Netscape (Gecko based)" only about Netscape version 7? Netscape 6 and Netscape Browser are both based on Gecko just as much as Netscape version 7 is, so it makes no sense. The problem is probably due to the various names that have been used:

  • Netscape Navigator - standalone browser
  • Netscape Navigator - suite
  • Netscape Navigator - browser included in suite
  • Netscape Communicator - suite
  • Netscape 6 - browser
  • Netscape - browser version 7
  • Netscape Browser - browser version 8

I can think of 2 good possibilities to fix this:

  • This article retitled "Netscape 7" or "Netscape (version 7)" and the article with the title "Netscape (Gecko based)" be a disambiguation page.
  • Netscape 6 and Netscape Browser merged into this article.

Rumoured regeneration[edit]

The only evidence I see supporting everything said in this section is an informal poll on a forum which contains a total of seven votes. It doesn't seem notable. If I post a poll to a forum about whether BMW should market a flying car and it gets some votes, do you think that's notable enough to add to the BMW article? -- Schapel 18:54, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll look into it. That is the wrong poll - this is the official one on Netscape's community support board by Jay Garcia, one of Netscape's current employees apparently, who also owns the UFAQ. I believe there's an announcement next week. I'll change the citation, and see how it goes Marbles 19:04, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you change the citation, refer to the poll rather than a "rumor", and limit what's written in the article to statements verifiable by the citation, I think that'll be okay. Jay Garcia is a Netscape employee and does run the forum, but he seems to have posted the poll as an individual, not as an official Netscape representative. I still don't see any word from Netscape, just an informal poll. -- Schapel 19:21, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sure will do Marbles 19:45, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am removing this section as the entire Netscape browser/suite is now no longer updated and will be no longer supported come March 2008. Therefore this rumor must have been false or based on a fact no longer used in AOL, so the section is worthless. I will put it back, as a "was a rumor, proven false" section if people think it's noteworthy. Ryaxnb (talk) 20:00, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
