This de-subcategorization is so lame I'm nearly speechless - somehow this proposal got by under my radar, and now botanists are unlike every other occupational category of comparable size. As you can see, the category is already too large to be displayed all at once, and the decategorization process deleted useful nationality info that had been painstakingly added by dozens of people, so now for instance the Category:French people is now incomplete - not all French people can be found by going to subcategories. This change was just not well-thought-out. Stan 02:41, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have recently created an entry Heinrich Wawra von Fernsee. I don't know how to get it into the lists of botanists. Tusbra Tusbra 17:10, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

this was taken care of long ago. --Lockley (talk) 00:30, 4 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comment from category page[edit]

This category is used for botanists - see also the list of botanists. Many important botanists have author abbreviations - these botanists are all listed in Category:Botanists with author abbreviations and the list of botanists by author abbreviation. Some early botanists do not have an author abbreviation - these are found, together with other early botanists who do, in Category:Pre-Linnaean botanists.

Please be careful if considering moving botanists out of Category:Botanists. If doing so, please check the botanist is listed on the list of botanists. Also check whether the botanist has an author abbreviation: you can search for an author abbreviation at ipni.org. The presence or not of the "." is important, as is the lack of spaces (e.g. W.Bartram is used for William Bartram). You can use the {{botanist|abbreviation|surname, name}} template at the bottom of the article to add this information: this will automatically add the article to Category:Botanists with author abbreviations (the template should not be substituted, nor should the author abbr. category be added manually). The list of botanists by author abbreviation needs manual updating. The IPNI search will often allow you to find a botanist's fields of research, which allows categorisation within Category:Botanists by field of research.

If moving a botanist out of this category, please also make sure that the article is categorised by nationality - this will allow people to find the botanist by browsing from Category:People by nationality and Category:Scientists by nationality. Botanists remaining in this category are either yet to be categorised by nationality or are (usually Post-Linnaean) botanists for whom an authorship abbreviation has not been found.
