History of the NPA[edit]

Surely the NPA has had more than these five mayors of Vancouver. I know for a fact that Rathie's predecessor, Thomas Alsbury was an NPA mayor - Rathie wrested the nomination from him. Donna Jean McKinnon in her excellent history of the mayors of Vancouver describes Rathie as being one in a "long line" of NPA mayors. Does someone with a better knowledge of NPA or Vancouver civic history know the story here? - Fishhead64, 07:03, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's a November 2002 Sun article (by John Mackie) linked from that same page at vancouverhistory.ca that notes that Alsbury was a former CCF candidate ('48) who let his membership lapse before running as an independent in 1958. Alsbury didn't run in '62, while Rathie won the NPA nomination. Ianking 00:33, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So I fixed the NPA list, bumped it to 10 and removed Tom Campbell. I was surprised how elusive this information is - history books all seem to focus on individuals, not parties, thus reinforcing the myth that they get elected on their own merits, independent of the party machine.

I used the John Mackie article listed above, Eric Nicol, Vancouver, David Ricardo Williams, Mayor Gerry, and Andrea Barbara Smith's MA thesis on the origins of the NPA (UBC), which I'll eventually use to beef up this article (and cite my sources properly).Bobanny 20:41, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems odd that this stub was gutted of much of its content. Generally, stubs are expanded; condensing and editing out jargon and POV are not the same things. To me, it looks dummed down and censored. I do realized it needed a re-write, so I won't revert. Instead, I'll try and put some work into getting at least the early history of the party up to snuff.Bobanny 17:47, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, okay. looks like Tom Terrific was independent first term, NPA second. Greater Vancouver Book, Eric Nicol's Vancouver, Milltown to Metropolis, all seemed to disagree, but looking through old online Ubysseys, seems he was both. Appartently the more stodgy of the old conservatives in the NPA were uncomfortable with his outlandish style, so he was contentious within the party.Bobanny 20:17, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The section currently reads as promotional script, and less a historical recollection of the party on a whole. No citations nor explanation of early formation. recent query re: conflict of interest[edit]

TheHelixYT asked: but should we all agree that members of the party or those closely related to the party should not be able to make updates on this page? I ask because I saw that a user with the name of current Park Board Commissioner John Coupar made edits to this page. in this edit.

That kind of thing is covered under WP:COI. But since there's already a warning at the top of the page about possible COI (from years ago), there's not much we can do other than report individual users if they repeatedly edit in a way that does not respect WP:NPOV. —Joeyconnick (talk) 19:27, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
