many of these artists are more closely associated with IDM. aphex twin, autechre, and boards of canada, for example— Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.52.239.163 (talk) 09:05, 16 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

This is true, but these artists are still very important to the ambient genre. Few artists record ambient exclusively. Listing them here does not imply that they are exclusively or even primarily ambient artists, but rather that they are significant to the formation of the genre. influential?[edit]

I think we need to either remove the word influential from the list description here, or remove some of the artists. Anyone agree? I don't claim to be an ambient expert but a large number of these artists seem to be incredibly obscure. --Chopchopwhitey 00:35, 29 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

I was just noticing that myself. Many of these artists were added to the list before the word "influential" was added as a restriction. heidimo 01:29, 29 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, I've nixed "influential". They are already mentioned in the main ambient music article. --Lexor|Talk — Preceding undated comment added 06:41, 18 June 2004 (UTC)[reply]

reverts[edit]

A non user at various IP addresses, keeps deleting chunks of this list, so I have to keep reverting. If that user is reading this, please don't just delete items without explanation. Many of the artists he deleted are most definitely considered ambient, such as Harold Budd and Michael Brook (although we have no articles on them yet), and other deletions simply break disambiguation, such Biosphere which should be a link to Biosphere (band). --Lexor|Talk 11:42, 19 Jun 2004 (UTC)

How ambient is ambient?[edit]

Radiohead have done a few spacey songs but they're hardly a definitive ambient band. And would drone bands like Sunn O))) count as ambient? Md25 22:35, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Tidying Up[edit]

I've been looking at a lot of the articles here and there are still loads, even amongst the blue-linked entries, that should probably be removed. Just looking through the A section there seems to be a pagan metal band, and Angels and Airwaves which appears to be a Blink 182 side project with synths in some songs. So is this page listing every artist who has ever made a slightly ambient song? Or, as I believe, should it stick to those artists who are notable within the genre and have influenced it or released an important work? Perhaps to clear it up to future editors, as well as to readers, information about why the artist is in the list should be included, along the lines of this table. Basically I think this article can be useful but not in the form of an exhaustive list which is where it appears to be heading (and which people have pointed out in this articles deletion nominations can be replaced by a category). What do people think? --Iae 12:07, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree. At the very least, I have added "notable" to the intro sentence, meaning this list should not contain any entries that do not have their own Wikipedia article (else it fails WP:Verifiability). This requirement also complies with the Keep consensus reached at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of ambient artists. This list will need to be pruned on a regular basis else it will quickly get out of control. -- Satori Son 03:45, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

added new artists to list that werent there prior.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Angeforce (talkcontribs) 14:57, 29 October 2006

Removing bands[edit]

I am removing bands with no article. If they were notable, they would have an article. If they are, they should be created; if not, should not be created or added. --Dane ~nya 05:29, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Thanks for handling this. -- Satori Son 02:49, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm adding Thom Brennan. He is a well-known ambient artist and I've just created his page Paolo Di Pierdomenico / Demiurgo 22:58, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. As long as the article stays, the entry should stay here. Thanks, Satori Son 02:49, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not sufficient to just remove the red links. Some blue links point to non-musicians (e.g., Paul Adams, Michael Atkinson, and Alexander, which I removed). Also, I suspect that many of these artists are not remotely notable yet have slipped through speedy deletion. Rizzoj 13:19, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Updated List.[edit]

added more artists to list. These artists have either been featured on Hearts of Space, or the ambient music stations. Heres an idea, google the artist name to confirm legitimacy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.226.24.209 (talk) 21:47, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

agreed. I googled a number of individuals who were in the wrong spots (filed under first name, not last etc.) to verify that they were not hooligans just wanting to see their name on the internet. I removed 'Ricardo Cardenas' (a red link) and could not find that he was an ambient electronic artist. Canadian Girl Scout (talk) 05:29, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Bands Without a Wiki Article?[edit]

Slow Dancing Society belongs on this list imo but a Wiki article for this artist does not exist. I'll admit this artist is lesser-known than some who made the cut, but he has been featured on PRI's "Echoes" so he has gained some national exposure.

Also The American Dollar DEFINITELY needs to be added to this list.

Please could you include [Bliss (Danish band)]? They only produce ambient music. Whereas some of their tracks feature relaxed rhythm and lead vocals others, such as "Wish U Were Here", are purely instrumental or use vocal sampling, such as "Kissing". [(danish band)]

Is the Ambient Music Guide not considered to be a reliable reference for ambient music?
