Someone created a duplicate of this article at Sophoniba, which has now been redirected here. I wanted to leave the text of the duplicate here:

Sophoniba was a daughter of Hanno IV The Great and a citizen of Carthage during the Second Punic War and Third Punic War. She is remembered for her patriotism, a love affair with Massinisa (lord of various tribes around Carthage and a protegee of Rome) and for her courage during her her tragic death. She was romanticized as an ideal woman for her courage and patriotism among other virtues by many writers and painters, especially during the Rennaisance, notably by Petrarch in his poem "Africa". The story is that Massinisa, when given a command by Scipio Africanus the Great (a Roman general during Second Punic War), to give up Sophoniba (because of her negative influence on him), visited her and offered her either to face Roman slavery or poison herself. She chose poison and thus avoided a subjugation to Rome.

Jemmy Thomson speculation defense?[edit]

Thomson's "Britons never shall be slaves" could have come from his Sophonisba, but it's not likely. Rather, his Sophonisba is much more likely to have come from his objection to the "enslavement" of the British people. As a lightly Tory author, he was one of a whole host of anti-Walpolean authors who frequently made oblique references to the losses of liberties under the whig ministry by talking of "slavery." By 1730, there was a significant anti-Walpole contingent under Pulteney, and they were very loudly using patriotism and "ancient English liberties" to comment on the present. Similar things were done by Henry Carey and others.

If no one wants to defend that speculation, I'll remove it in a week or so. Geogre 11:10, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
