Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on October 3, 2013.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that the episode "Shades of Gray" was created as a clip show for Star Trek: The Next Generation and was later described by a critic as "god-awful"?

Untitled[edit]

As the only clip show in the series (or any Star Trek series)...

Before anyone mentions The Menagerie from TOS, I would argue that is not a traditional clip show as the footage from the original pilot, The Cage, was not aired on television until years later, while clip shows use previously-aired footage. --Feitclub 06:14, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

"Also an award-winning book about the civil war". Which civil war? I suspect it's the American one, but as surprising as this might sound to a lot of people, the USA is not the whole world. JIP | Talk 10:07, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Worst Episode Ever[edit]

I have never met a single Trek fan who disagreed with the assertion that this was the worst episode in the entire TNG series. 68.218.212.225 08:23, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This episode is nothing like the Menagerie. The menagerie at least had an interesting plot, this one is only a confused compilation of past clips intertwined with a nonexistent plot filled with meaningless medical jargon. This is the worst episode in Star Trek, period, and the most annoying.

Yes, this is probably the lamest TNG epiosde, but you can blame greedy Hollywood unions for that, the writers went on strike and they needed one more script to finish the season and they bailed before they got it finished. So to make the season quota they made this filler piece of crap with thrown together scenes from other episodes. Cyberia23 22:27, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clip show! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.67.104.4 (talk) 16:41, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I always thought this was a good episode. However, when I first saw it, it was in syndication and I hadn't yet seen all of the preceding episodes.--WizWheatly (ftaghn) 19:38, 8 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Terrible safety procedures[edit]

Geordi brought the organism back aboard without using a sample container?! This thing had no known treatment! At least Spock used a "tool box" in "Operation--Annihilate!" What if he accidentally got jostled and let loose on his forceps? Was the property master short of materials that day? GBC (talk) 07:44, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This really isn't relevant to the article. But, because it's asked, remember that this episode was written so as to be shot quickly with minimal sets. I doubt it went through the usual vetting given the circumstances of its production. Daniel Case (talk) 17:40, 18 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Strike or budget problem?[edit]

This article explains that the clip show format was necessary because the show had run out of funds By the end of the season. However, the article Clip show states that it was because of the writers strike. -- Brianhe (talk) 18:57, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have access to the source here [Gross; Altman (1993)], but the claim in clip show is unsourced. Chris857 (talk) 19:03, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That was one of the excuses bandied around - but mostly because the shorter season was overall due to the 1988 Writers Guild of American Strike - but this simply delayed the start of the series and resulted in using a Star Trek: Phase II script for the first episode of the season. They had plenty of time to do a full length episode at the end, just not the cash because they'd overspent on Sherlock Holmes and the Borg. I have access to the source which if I remember right was made up of quotes from Maurice Hurley and Rob Bowman. Miyagawa (talk) 19:22, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Still better than the filthy book.[edit]

Star Trek did it first and better. Christian ain't got nothing on Commander William Riker. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.142.160.165 (talk) 10:36, 2 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
