MacTutor[edit]

There is a bio at http://www-history.mcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/history/Mathematicians/Hirsch.html if anyone wants to take a shot at adapting it. Stormie 21:44, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC)

To my ear this article is plagiarized from the MacTutor article cited above. The article does not even cite that source. And even if it did, would such a clear rephrasing of a copyrighted article be acceptable by Wikipedia standards? Compare Wikipedia:Plagiarism Typometer (talk) 16:57, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wikified the article a bit before noticing the plagiarism problem. Fixing the plagiarism is probably easy: just cut out more of the flavor text, and stick to the simple facts (which I tried to wikify). It is probably also reasonable to split out his mathematical work from his bio; the non-math bio could be 2 or 3 paragraphs (schooling, journalistic work, family life). The MR link has a list of many of his papers. Doing a search for Hirsch in the title is also reasonable, as the Hirsch length and Hirsch-Plotkin radical are pretty well studied.
