"Commonwealth of the Philippines"[edit]

For zh:菲律宾

What's the Chinese translation of "Commonwealth of the Philippines"? --Samuel 08:09, 19 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Chinese Goggle has no hits. I think it's "Philippines" (菲律賓) + "Commonwealth/Federation" (聯邦), parallel to "the Commonwealth of Australia" (澳大利亞聯邦). However, it's also possible that the Chinese translated "commonwealth" in this case as "共和國" (identical to "Republic"), but then that'd be indistinguishable from the present transl. of "The Republic of the Philippines." --Menchi 17:45, Aug 19, 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for the support[edit]

Hi Menchi,

It was already some weeks ago, but i nevertheless wanted to thank you for the support in my application for Adminship. I will try to do my best to make the people know that Admins are here to help. If you ever see me doing someting, that you think, an Admin should not do, let me know immediately. I look forward to a long time of good collaboration (for humankind ;-)

Thank you very much, Fantasy 08:32, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

You're welcome. I'm certain that you'll make a polite and helpful admin, as you have been a polite and helpful non-admin before. --Menchi 18:20, Aug 20, 2003 (UTC)
Thanks :-) Fantasy 08:27, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Simple English[edit]

Hi, I noticed you have contributed to the Simple English Wikipedia in the past. I am trying to revive it a bit as it hasn't been edited very much lately, so this is just a reminder that it's still there and you are very welcome to come and help! Yours views on what to call the "village pump" are also requested. See [1]. Thanks. Angela 11:57, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Sure. The only reason I didn't go there much is that it's too hard to log in. --Menchi 18:20, Aug 20, 2003 (UTC)
Hopefully Simple will be moved to the new software soon, so that won't be a problem in the future. It's on Brion's to-do list. Angela

Sources[edit]

I have read several articles of your nice writing on Chinese contemporaries, including Cai Yuanpei, Li Zongren etc. Just wondering your sources of information. All the best kt2 06:58, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I start off with the dictionary definitions from Guoyu Cidian. Then, using those keywords, I get detailed biographies from Chinese Google (instead of random mentionings of their names). Many of them are extremely detailed on political life but lacking in philosophical or domestic life, or even where they died or were born; others provide just the opposite. So a balance can be achieved sometimes.
Throughout the process, I tried to see if there are existing translations for certain terms in English Google (there usually aren't). So, I don't like starting off with English websites. Also, since there are very incomplete (you can get 20,000 Chinese Googles and 500 English). Second, I don't even know which Chinese words they're referring to when they use the Romanized words -- which impededs me from Googling further using those keywords.
So, those are my sources: Dictionary -> Chinese Google (occasionally Taiwan Yahoo) -> English Google -> more Chinese Google. --Menchi 07:14, Aug 21, 2003 (UTC)
So, no, there wasn't one or two sources I go to. That's why it took me hours to write just one biography (or place-article). But then, I'm always interrupted, so... :-D --Menchi 07:21, Aug 21, 2003 (UTC)

Adminship[edit]

Menchi, thanks from a fellow Canadian for adding the snail mail address on the Donations page. I would have done it myself but my nomination for admin status got lost months ago, somehow I was nominated by LittleDan, seconded by Mav but then no one ever did anything about that even though I accepted the nomination and no one said anything negative about the nomination. It has been suggested that I renominate myself, however, I refuse to nominate myself, just not my style. Alex756 05:07, 23 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I've seen you around and have found no Wiki-ill, so I will nominate you now with gladness. --Menchi 06:19, Aug 23, 2003 (UTC)
Thank you, Menchi!Alex756

Capitalization of "romanization"[edit]

Why do you capitalize "romanization" in the middle of a sentence? --Jiang 05:23, 24 Aug 2003 (UTC)

It can be written both ways. I checked the dictionary on that matter a while ago. But if it looks odd in some places, you can decapitalize it too. It's like that "colour"/"color" thing. --Menchi 05:28, Aug 24, 2003 (UTC)

Request for Chinese characters[edit]

Hi Menchi, Could you possibly convert: to text for me? I've no idea how to type chinese characters, but I can cut and past if you can type them for me :) Many thanks -- sannse 20:51, 26 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Sure. Here: 西施犬 (Xishi Quan), 獅子狗 (Shizi Gou). --Menchi 21:12, Aug 26, 2003 (UTC)
So is the romanization "Shih tzu" or "Shi Zi" incorrect? The .jpeg was used for the Shih Tzu article, but if they say "Xishi Quan" and "Shizi Gou" maybe they are wrong. -- sannse 21:19, 26 Aug 2003 (UTC)
They are both correct Romanizations: Shih-tzu (anglicized as Shih Tzu) is in the formerly popular Wade-Giles, Shizi is in the currently influential Pinyin. They refer to the exact same characters that mean "lion dog." Because the vowels ending the two sounds are unfounded in all European languages, the romanization for them is always arbitrary. Some Romanizations even use consonants, like r and z, for these Chinese vowels.
Xishi Quan is an alternative name that means "Beauty dog".
Both quan and gou means "dog"
--Menchi 21:29, Aug 26, 2003 (UTC)
That's great, thanks for your help :) -- sannse 21:33, 26 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Stay away not[edit]

Thanks for the message you left on my talk page, even if I didn't fully understand it (I'm not a star trek fan). I've decided to not let it worry me and come back. Too much of a Wikipediholic to stay away and too forgetful to keep up a pseudonym. :)

It's probably Star-Trekese combined with bad English that caused hard to understand. :-D Good to see your user page reappearing! That eerie blood-red "Angela" links that I saw everywhere are finally replaced by the friendly marine-blue "Angela"! --Menchi 19:51, Aug 27, 2003 (UTC)

Thank you for pointing out the Ben, Charlie, Happy non sequitor. However, I'm not sure how to reformat Themes and Points of Interest because I'm "not begging for an answer" - I don't know the answer myself, nor am I sure there is "an answer." I'm just writing out thoughts on the play. How should I reformat it to make that more clear? -- User:Alex S

Maybe the lack of answer means that the questions are "unimportant" (unencyclopedic). This is not like "existence of god" uncertainty, but more like "people don't research it, just discuss it" uncertainty. I'll ask others in the the Pump. --Menchi 21:05, Aug 27, 2003 (UTC)

Chinese mythology stuff[edit]

Hello Menchi, i'm fairly new here and i'm doing some stuff on Chinese mythology and I noticed you had done a lot of the existing stuff on that subject. I thought maybe you could add the chinese characters as I put new links up on the Chinese mythology page. I would also apreciate your opinion on any of the stuff I put up.

Cheers, Dan

I only did the Eight Immortals and nothing much more. >_< All I did to Chinese mythology was changing the presentation format.
You did a good job on The Jade Emperor, I added some Pinyin and Chinese characters to it. There are many words whose characters that I don't know just by the English translation. And sometimes only the Romanization isn't sufficient either. But if I come across something Chinese-related you wrote, I'd provide Chinese characters that I know of gladly. --Menchi 02:10, 6 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Redirect vs. see-also[edit]

Hi, you left a comment on my talk page about redirecting Edwardian to Edwardian_period... I knew about redirects, I just wasn't sure since "Edwardian" can also refer to "of the Edwardian period" as well as "Edwardian period"... but I see you've made up my mind for me :) Incidentally, (not that I have any intention of doing in on this page or, actually, on any others I can think of offhand) is there a way of undoing redirects? Was curious, didn't find anything. Thanks for the help and guidance - Brassratgirl 04:59, 6 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Chinese character input problem[edit]

I am getting nowhere fast trying to insert Chinese characters pertaining to the discussion on whether to use simplified or traditional. I wanted to put in a list of pairs of characters that must be handled with care, but I can't figure out how to do it. I've found a way to take a big5 character representation, use it to search in Google (but only if I'm using Mozilla), and then copying the &# junk out of the search string that it says it used. Unfortunately it doesn't work. (Now the whole page has disappeared, and I was just looking at it!) When you do it, are you starting with a text in big5, in GB, in UTF-8???

Thanks.

Patrick0Moran 01:43, 8 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Actually, most people (including me) simply type up the Chinese characters in the edit-box, and press "Preview", and the next page will reveal its Unicode in edit-box and dispaly the characters properly on the preview webpage. It works in both big5 and GB. It works in both Internet Explorer 6 and Mozilla (Window 98). Are you using Mac? --Menchi 01:48, 8 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind comment. It is very much appreciated as I found his response to me quite upsetting. Angela 00:49, Sep 12, 2003 (UTC)

No need to feel upset. His comment deserves no emotional reply. WP needs less of him (preferrably none) and more of you. :-) --Menchi 00:57, 12 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Pach'im?[edit]

Hi,

Would you mind giving me the hangul spelling, if you could, of "pach'im" (respelled by a later editor as "bachim")? I couldn't find this word in my Minjung Essence Korean-English dictionary. I was looking it up because I suspect you used it wrong. I understood it to mean a syllable-final consonant or consonant cluster (as it is in fact used later in the article, in its current version, at least).

Bob Schmertz

The webpage I got it from has only the Romaja (I can't find it now). I checked out The Korean Language by Lee and Ramse, and it spells it as patchim (still without Hangul, but is in Yale, I presume), and it means "support". So, two identical consonants -- like kk -- is a ssang-patchim ("double support") and two different consecutive consonants -- like lk -- is a kyep-patchim ("joint support").
Thanks for bringing this up. And welcome aboard! --Menchi 06:32, 13 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Comments on Image Copyright[edit]

Hey Menchi,

I saw your comments on image copyright that you posted on User:Xamian. Thanks for your suggestions. I have put copyright info on the Image:HiroshimaPrefecturalPromotionHall.JPG .

I have a question about Image:Martov 2.jpg . I note on Wikipedia:Image_use_policy it states that "Under United States copyright law, all images that were published before January 1, 1923 in the United States are now in the public domain, but this does not apply to images that were created prior to 1923 and published in 1923 or later." Since Julius Martov died in 1920, would this be evidence enough that this picture is safe? I'm not exactly sure, but I assumed it would be. What advice do you have?

Thanks again for the comments and the pages to look at.

Xamian 04:00, 17 Sep 2003 (UTC)

From my understanding, it doesn't matter when the subject of a photo dies; instead, it depends on when the copyright-owner (probably the photographer) published the photo (which is probably unrelated to the death of the subject).
What's the source of that photo? When was that source published? --Menchi 04:08, 17 Sep 2003 (UTC)
It is from http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/RUSmartov.htm ... I put it in Wikipedia:Votes for deletion a few days ago. I guess we'll see what happens. :-)

Pollination Problems?[edit]

Menchi, I'm wondering if you can help me? User:Pollinator has been doing some odd stuff with Pollination, Pollenizer, and Pollinizer, and perhaps more. Since you did a lot of the original work on Pollination, I'm wondering if you can look at it and see if what he/she's doing is making sense? I think it looks like a muck is being made of things, but I don't know enough to make sense of things, and the convoluted edit history that Pollinator's leaving behind him/herself helps cover their tracks. I'm inclined to revert back to the last non-Pollinator edit, but don't know if I'm over-reacting...too tired to think straight. I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look, thanks! Jwrosenzweig 22:57, 17 Sep 2003 (UTC)

They look okay, but the some paragraphs seem to be going off tangent, like the one about watermelons and luck seems to be reminiscening of ye goode olde time. --Menchi 23:47, 17 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Thanks...I sensed the tangents but wasn't sure how odd they were. I appreciate your taking the time. Jwrosenzweig 03:11, 18 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Re: Comments on Image Copyright[edit]

Hey there.

I submitted the image Martov into the Wikipedia:Votes for deletion. Thanks for the comments. It's good to get advice from others since I'm so green :-)

Deleted "personal link (ad)"[edit]

Hi Menchi,

You've deleted several external links I've been adding to various Hiroshima Bombing wikis. The link in question is http://www.synaptic.bc.ca/ejournal/hirosidx.htm.

I'm a bit curious about the reason for doing so; many wikipedias include external links and they are generally valuable sources of information.

The information referenced on that page does include some 'personal experience,' of Hiroshima, particularly sitting beside the A-bomb dome one cloudy morning.

   http://www.synaptic.bc.ca/ejournal/abombdme.htm

I believe it is an insightful commentary on the emotional impact of visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, and of attempting to reconstruct the effects of the atomic bomb on the people of Hiroshima on that day.

That personal experience in addtion to the the other items referenced on the page seem to me an appropriate addition to the Wikipedia.

Cheers,

p

Your website is not about the place; it is about your feelings of your visit. Moreover, there's no justification on adding a link about your personal experience to Daoism versus Taoism, which is about the romanizations, not religion, and definitely not your experience. That is just promotion/ad to your website -- something Wikipedia does not appreciate. --Menchi 21:43, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Personal pages[edit]

I do appreciate I'm dancing a fine line here; I've attempted to be sensitive and responsible in my additions of external links, while making appropriate content edits where I have special knowledge. I'm trying to clarify my understanding of wiki editing etiquette. It may be that the annotation I appended to the links is prejudicial.

I apologise for the Daoism versus Taoism link. On reflection, I agree that page is inappropriate in the context of the entry.

However, I disagree that the page is about my personal experience of Daoism. The information on the Lao Tse & Daoism Resources page consists predominantly of annotated references to online information relevant to Lao Tse and Daoism, all external to my own site. The one exception, added as a footnote to these references, is a single link to my own experiences.

Similarly, the Hiroshima: At 8:15 AM on August 6, 1945 page is specifically about the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, an event which has come to define Hiroshima, the place, in a palpable and evocative way. Most references, including the intra-site links, are not concerned with my personal experiences but, rather, with a factual presentation of information relevant to the Hiroshima bombing. For example, the following are the intra-site links appearing on the Hiroshima page:

  • pika-don Excerpts information presented in the exhibits of Hiroshima's A-Bomb Museum.
  • What Tony Wheeler Thinks Quotes the publisher of the Lonely Planet travel guides concerning the arguments for and against dropping the bomb. This quote does appear at the bottom of a page logging my experience of riding the nozomi Shinkansen, however, the link directs visitors directly to the quote.
  • Einstein Quotes "The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe" followed by a description of how many of the physicists who'd created the bomb counselled against its use against Japan. This is followed by a second quote from the book, The Day Man Lost.

The three remaining links, On a park bench beside the A-Bomb Dome, RE: Pika-don and Catching up on some events do represent my own experiences. On the other hand, On a park bench beside the A-Bomb Domeis a carefully researched first-person description of what someone sitting within metres of ground zero at 8:15 AM on August, 6 1945 would have experienced. It is an attempt to place the reader at ground zero of the historical event which has come to define Hiroshima.

I believe this page, and the Hiroshima page in general, both informative and relevant to Wikipedia entries concerning the bombing of Hiroshima.

As I stated at the beginning of this post, I realise I'm dancing the line between self-interest and providing useful information. It's not my intent to hijack Wikipedia for my own gain. The pages I've added as external links were created to provide my own travelogue visitors useful, informative resources beyond my own experiences. I'm hoping they do the same for Wikipedia's users.

Cheers,

p. Hex Angel 23:53, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC)

The important external links on your pages can easily and directly be placed on the appropriate articles (the length excerpt is unnecessary; a summary will suffice). It's the same reason why we don't place links to a directory-pages from Google or Yahoo: The absence of which means the reader needs to click just once, instead of twice.
And the directory web pages linked by your directory pages is best eliminated as middlemen as well. For example, despite having 20 or so links, [2] has just 2 or 3 useful links for Hiroshima Peace Memorial. The easier and more straightforward the linking, the smaller the morass, the happier the reader. --Menchi 00:31, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Fair enough[edit]

Well stated. Thanks, Menchi, for the concise reply.

If you could indulge me one more post, in your opinion are any of the links currently on Hiroshima: At 8:15 AM... appropriate for inclusion as external links?

Hey, love the new jigsaw puzzle logo!

Cheers,

p. Hex Angel 01:30, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

The 1st link needs sieving and the 4th is the very problem of directories. I think the last one is fine, but technically, it is selling something -- but since the photos there are so excellent, I think it's fine. The 2nd link is very informative. The 3rd link is politically significant. The poems and quotes from intra-site pages seem more appropriate on quote.wikipedia. --Menchi 01:53, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)
Thanks.
<grin> The 1st link will get cut from my own page - it's a legacy from 1995 when it represented the best (nearly the only) Hiroshima resource on the net. It's only relatively recently that Hiroshima bombing resources have exploded on online -- so it's time for an update. The 4th link...well, I wouldn't want to cut that now, would I? ;-) As for the rest, we're in agreement. Cheers, p. Hex Angel 06:10, 26 Sep 2003 (UTC)

UK article on Chinese WP[edit]

Why is the United Kingdom article on the Chinese WP at 英国 instead of 联合王国? Shouldn't 英国 be reserved for England only? --Jiang 01:11, 9 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Both 英国 and 联合王国 mean "United Kingdom", except that 英国 is much more popular and well-known than its longer synomyn. "England" is not translated as 英国, but as 英格蘭 (Yinggelan). 英格蘭 is used even when referring to England as a former kingdom. It's parallel to Scotland, when refering to which as a former kingdom, it is Sugelan (蘇格蘭) and not 蘇国 (a non-existent name). --Menchi 01:21, 9 Oct 2003 (UTC)

The Chinese Culture of crickets[edit]

Hello, this is GSYH. I am currently trying to write about the culture of crikets in China. You know, keeping them for their songs, letting them fight each other for sports? Unfortunately, I live in Canada, and have never came in personnal contact with such culture, however I am interested in it. Most internet searches came up with information about crickets as feeders for larger pets like lizards. You live in Taiwan, and seems to be interested a lot in Chinese culture. Know any first hand or close to first hand info on the above? I did come across a nice informative article below: http://www.insects.org/ced3/chinese_crcul.html Do you know any cricket markets or race places in Taiwan? Help would be very much appreciated. Also, I am not spamming your talk page am I. If bothered, just say so. --GSYH Oct11, 2003

I actually have never witnessed -- in real life or even on TV -- a cricket race or been to a cricket market. One or two of my former classmates played crickets as boys (not professionally at all, just kids' game). My only knowledge about cricket game is a story from the Ming Dynasty about a man, Cheng Ming (成名), whose dead son transformed into a courageous cricket that wins all fights, even against the emperor's cricket. --Menchi 02:36, 12 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Hi Menchi, take a look of the article and add anything relevant, would you mind? BTW some trimming in your talk page would be nice b/c it's getting long (and inconvenient) to scroll all the way down. All the best. ;) kt2 23:42, 12 Oct 2003 (UTC)
