Untitled[edit]

Removed erroneous claim that fresh kills would be the tallest point on the east cost. This is obviously wrong based on: http://egsc.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/booklets/elvadist/elvadist.html 

  Mt. Marcy (In New York State alone) is over 5,000 feet tall, and it is not the highest peak on the east coast.

I moved the text of this page from the entry Fresh Kills which is properly the name of the stream and not the landfill. After moving, I rewrote it and corrected a number of things

  • the "viewable from space" is completely anecdotal and patently false.
  • the streams called Fresh Kills still exist and thrive.
  • the closure of the island was due primarily to local pressure, not from the federal government.

The page could use more details about the history and geography. The section that is probably most deserved of expansion concerns the future plans for the site. IN 2001, there was design competition for the new parklands, but I am not sure of the status, since the WTC collapse shuffled any timetable most likely.--Decumanus 21:57, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I removed the claim below, which is obviously false. The claim was mentioned here, which says it was expected to become the largest structure if allowed to grow to 500 ft. However, the landfill was closed at 100 ft.

  • The Landfill is also the largest single man made structure ever, larger even than the Great wall of China.

name?[edit]

Shouldn't the article devote a sentence or two to how the landfill got its name?

Those of us who know NYC mainly from crime thrillers are likely to assume that the name was an ironic comment on how frequently the landfill is used for dumping the victims of organized crime assassinations.

The last line of the first graph does explain the name: "The name "Fresh Kills" refers to its location along the banks of the Fresh Kills estuary in western Staten Island." But it should explain the Dutch word "kill." Digit LeBoid 21:30, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

More Claims[edit]

Is there any documentation of this claim: "It is also seen as being the largest man-made structure on Earth. In fact in 2001 its peak was taller than the Statue Of Liberty."-? It sounds a lot like the claims of how big the landfill would have been if completed, but did not necessarily happen. Clarification[edit]

Should "The debris was later removed into various locations, including museums and steel mills" read "Some of the debris..." I believe there is still debris, including human remains on the site. Digit LeBoid 15:06, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Highest point on Eastern Seaboard of US claim[edit]

I removed the following claim:

Had Fresh Kills stayed open as long as originally planned it would have grown to be the highest point on the East Coast of the United States.

Everything I've read puts the projected final height of Fresh Kills at 500 ft (150 meters), well below the height of Cadillac Mountain on Mount Desert Island in Maine at 1,528 feet (470 m). 1960s History[edit]

I added the 1960s history section. Its based on my numerous visits to the site and talks with employees of the time.

Fresh Kills is not the largest man made structure[edit]

It is complete hogwash about Fresh Kills. What defines a man-made structure? Aren't some road networks bigger. Couldn't Holland be considered the largest man-made structure? What about the Three Gorges Dam if we count the reservoir.

The Great Wall is also much larger than Fresh Kills. The wall itself is around 6,200 km, or 20,341,207 feet long. The width of the wall is around 12 feet, therefore it would be around 244,094,484 sq ft in surface area; or about 5,603 acres. That is almost three times the size of Fresh Kills, yet I am not including the width of the base. Since some estimates are around 8,850 km, that would be 7,998 acres or over 32 square kilometers (12.5 square miles).
