CS Lewis Quotation[edit]

I was quoting from memory, so I may not have it precisely right, but the quotation is from one of the early chapters of Mere Christianity. Lewis compares the then-contemporary tendency to use "Christian" to mean "good person" to the wearing-down of the word "gentleman", which originally carried a meaning of social class and landholding, irrespective of behavior: "When Adam delved and Eva span, who was then the gentleman?" (Wat Tyler). It later came to betoken anyone who behaved himself very well, as gentlemen claimed they behaved, and gradually wore down to mere approval, and finally it became an insult to say someone was not a gentleman. I hope this helps. Robert A West 14:27, 18 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved your comments at the talk page of Julius Caesar to a new thread. If you need anything, post a comment on my talk page, or email me. Erik the Red 2 (talk) 01:15, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That wasn't me, actually! There must be another DjR somewhere. Odd! DjR (talk) 21:23, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article Frog CMS has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability; nothing online to indicate how it's notable. As noted in the article, the project died 4 years ago, and a fork was attempted which also does not yet seem notable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Orphaned non-free media (File:FrogCMS.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:FrogCMS.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:21, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

List of Metonyms[edit]

Hello, DjR. You recently edited List of metonyms, adding a link to Fleet Street. As the edit notice on that page notes, there are a huge number of such metonyms in English. Therefore, additions to the list should cite sources that analyze the metonym as a metonym, not sources that use the metonym. As far as I can tell (though I have only the Google Books summary on which to judge the book), the sources you cited are "use" rather than "mention". Cnilep (talk) 00:48, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh dear, I was clearly too quick on the draw. I see that the newspaper article does say, "This figure of speech... is called a metonym." I restored that source, but left out the book. Sorry for the confusion. Cnilep (talk) 00:53, 4 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Women and Religion[edit]

Hi there @DjR:, I think you would be really interested in the edit-a-thon on Women and Religion. Why don't you sign up on the bottom of the page, and add a few names while you are at it? –Caorongjin (talk) 14:48, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Battle of Blue Licks[edit]

I don't mean to make light of the serious situation you've brought at ANI, but I had to share, I read it only as 'Battle of Blues Licks'. Like something between a battle of the bands and a guitar battle and the "head-cutting" scene from Crossroads (1986 film):-) And I don't even consider myself an avid guitarist (though I do own a few). --DB1729 (talk) 19:24, 26 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
