Similarities to other TV series[edit]

The whole "Notable" section listing other TV series that this series "resembles theme-wise" is at best just a bit of interesting trivia, not worthy of a section in this article. Most of these resemblances are simply typical elements of the formula that shows of this kind are based on. For example, Westerns have cowboys, Sci-Fi movies have space ships, Police shows have car chases, and TV shows for kids or teens have heroes their age with some unique characteristics and a couple of friends as supporting characters.

Notable[edit]

It is notable that this animated series somewhat resembles theme-wise:

It is also notable that this animated series is somewhat similar theme-wise to other series, such as:

  • Big Wolf on Campus - teenage kid named Thomas "Tommy" P. Dawkins, is bitten by a Werewolf during a camping trip in the woods; after becoming a Werewolf he fights against vampires, cat women, ghosts, zombies etc to keep his hometown of Pleasantville safe - though almost everyone in Pleasantville belives that "The Pleasantville Werewolf" is dangerous. Tommy Dawkins has two friends who know his secret: Merton J. Dingle (Goth) and Lori Baxter (knows martial arts and wrestling moves) as fights against vampires, cat women, ghosts, zombies etc.
  • American Dragon: Jake Long - teenage kid with secret powers (he can turn into a fire breathing dragon) and has two close friends (one boy (Spud) & one girl (Trixie)) who know his secret.

Danny Phantom was out way before American Dragon.

Also note that Tucker and Richie have the same last name: Foley.

Butch Hartman revealed "Foley" was a reference to the character Axel Foley though. It's just a coincidence. ~Skye-chan 15:42, 21 October 2006 (UTC) The comparisson between danny and jake and harry doesn't matter cuz every single character have only two friends(boy & girl) try to make comparissons like " The Negative zone(fantastic four) and the ghost zone.[reply]

  • Kim Possible - teenage kid with natural gymnastics and martial arts skills and the world knows about her (she has a website - and she's not afraid to use it), she has two close friends (one boy (Ron) & one girl (Monique)).
  • Bleach (manga) - The idea of a person related to ghosts unwillingly made into a so-called ghost themselves (in a strange way), the Ghost Zone and Soul Society, parents who (seemingly) don't know about their power and the enemy consisting of mainly other ghosts. Also, the ghosts in Danny Phantom could be compared to the hollows and plus spirits of Bleach.

Good observation on the similarities! This happens for several reasons. One, lack of originality: Everyone is just borrowing from each other--industrial espionage and reverse engineering. The two main cartoons of this time and age are The Simpsons and Ren and Stimpy . Most of what you see in animation is a derivative of these two cartoons.

Compare the voices and appearance of Denzel Q. Crocker and Montgomery Burns . Or compare the parents in The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom with Marge Simpson and Homer Simpson. You see that it is the same personality template—the father is dumb, and the mother is smart. I am unclear why this keeps coming up. Or maybe the creators have what Carl Jung calls an anima, such as Lewis Carroll. Or, they may just be selling the cartoon to the moms.

The second reason is that all stories are really just one story: the monomyth. In The Hero With A Thousand Faces, Joseph Campbell makes the pint that every story is just a variation of certain elements. Hence, all stories are really telling the same story, once you get past the non-essentials.

I wonder, though, why no-one has noticed the blatant similarities it has to Bleach manga.
Which one came out first? The published manga was out in 2001, but wasn't on TV until October 2004 (overseas, that is; in the US it started in September 2006).

So is that when it came out? Whe did DP come out, then? Wait....DP came out in April '04, however the Bleach anime came out in October '04....but the manga was, as you stated, released in 2001...So, technically, Bleach came first.
So they won in terms of print, but lost in terms of broadcast. Ah well. It seems that there is not much original concepts remaining in animation. Everything now involves a kid with some powers.

It's similar "theme-wise" to the first Pokémon (anime) series: "Gonna catch 'em all" vs. "Gotta catch 'em all". Can that be spun as notable? --Damian Yerrick () 05:03, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also the series, The Secret World Of Alex Mack is similar. Alex recives her powers on accident, she has an african american best friend (Ray) so does danny phantom (Tucker), also both of the older sisters know. And the parents do not.

Comment: One could argue that Phantom is borrowing from Potter, as the first HP book was released in the late 1990's. But I like them both!--206.27.244.59 20:37, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What are any of you talking about? It's dead Spider-Man. The main villain is the Green Goblin if he had an obsession with the Green Bay Packers. Flash? Dash? Liz Allen? Paulina?? Insecure hero with bad publicity? It's dead Spider-Man. Also, Skulker is literally Kraven the Hunter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nikenshivi (talkcontribs) 07:58, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"Canadian counterpart": Being Ian[edit]

Despite Being Ian lacking the ghosts, fighting, and such, I feel that Ian Kelley (based on Ian James Corlett) the protagonist of the Canadian show Being Ian, has some similarities with Danny, making him (for me) the closest "Canadian counterpart" for Danny:

  • Both Ian and Danny have the same voice actor in their shows's Latin American Spanish dubs.
  • Ian has two friends, a dark-skinned boy (Tyrone, an African-American), and a girl (Sandra "Sandi", who is a tomboy).
  • While Danny achieves his dream of being an astronaut through his fights, Ian achieves his dream of being a filmmaker through his adventures and conflicts with his school friends.
  • Being Ian ran from 2005 to 2007 and had three seasons.

These are the only similarities I could find between Danny Phantom and Being Ian, though there may be much more. 24.50.177.108 (talk) 05:04, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Danny Phantom Fandom[edit]

A "contrary opinion" regarding the edits to the previously inaccurate and rather malevolently worded sections about the fandom being split into two groups - "Shippers" and "Fangirls" was placed directly into the article recently in a rather unprofessional manner. Why don't we just talk this out here, rather than directly in the article?

To quote said opinion:

(Contrary Opinion

end contrary opinion)

(End of quote)

However the original assessment of the Phandom consisting of Shippers and FanGirls is a valid one not easily dismissed. Over at http://www.fanfiction.net many of the DP fanpieces follow the 'Danny meets Sam, Danny loses Sam, Danny gets Sam back' plot and many of the reviews are posted for fanfic pieces that follow that highly original plot which suggests the Phandom has somehow glossed over the deeper elements found in the early episodes. There are also a few websites with screencaps exclusively of the title character, with absolutely no mention or screentime of other characters in the episode. This supports the notion the Phandom is made up of fangirls.

It should be noted that the original assessment of fangirls and shippers was much more caustic, worded in a way that specifically classified and degraded both groups.

While it is true that there are both fangirls and shippers among the fandom, they are not the sole groups within it. Other fans who believe that they are neither fangirls nor shippers, but are good, active members of Danny Phantom communities see things like this and can feel rather left out.

Also, their are many, many stories on said fanfiction.net that these said fans disapprove of for their mistreatment of the characters of the show. (The easiest example of this is slash fanfiction. Butch Hartman, the creator of Danny Phantom, has specifically denounced this type of writing using his characters, and all known slashers have been banned from his personal forums. The simple reason for this is that the characters are straight. If someone wants to write slash, they can freely write it with their own characters. Another example would be any adult conduct among the main characters of the show. Please, most of them are 14!)

FINALLY!!SOMEONE agrees with me!!!

I think this [1] (to the left) version was well-written. In fact, I might restore it. Pacific Coast Highway 22:00, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I completely agree that fanfiction among a children's show is . . . unsettleing (spelled wrong), if not just outright perverted, but the part about them being 14 is no excuse. There are 11 year olds that, strange as it is, have sex, but still, a childrens show?!

((Please note that the majority of adult conduct that takes place between the characters in fanfiction is written with them at a much older age. Additionally, Butch Hartman did not want people to post slash fanfiction and/or links to it on his personal forums, as this would connect it to him directly and in an official way, which is definitely not the case. Lastly, of course, we cannot presume all the characters are straight because, quite frankly, we do not know for sure (and unless the issue is raised, we probably never will). My final point is that at the end of the day, the fans essentially make the show, and face it, without them the show wouldn't even be on the air, so show some leniency!))

That's such bullshit. If fans made the show I doubt DP would, as of now, be canceled. Nick doesn't give a crap about the people that watch their shows.H2P 05:08, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So true. Pacific Coast Highway (blahlol, internet) 23:31, 13 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Lol at you saying "Nick doesn't care who watches their shows." Money and demand talks. If no one cares for the show --> less ratings --> less likely to keep it on air + coming out with new episodes. It doesn't take an expert to know that. AnonymousUserOnWiki (talk) 22:36, 21 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please provide a source to show this show is "in hiatus" and not ended?[edit]

Otherwise, saying it is "possibly in hiatus" is only speculation. If no one can provide a reliable source, I'll be changing this back to "cancelled" in about 24 to 48 hours. 青い(Aoi) (talk) 23:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. As of this time, the series has ended. Butch Hartman and his crew has moved on and is focusing on both Fairly Oddparents and TUFF Puppy. There is no news from his or Nickelodeon's end that the series will continued. Considering it was canned in 2006 and ended in 2007, I think it's safe to say Danny Phantom is DONE. Merge with Amity Park and Ghost Zone[edit]

Neither Amity Park nor Ghost Zone are sufficiently independently notable elements of fiction to justify their own articles. As such, they should be merged into this article. Neelix (talk) 15:07, 15 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coming here to once again land support, though we're not thinking about actually merging all the info of Amity Park and the Ghost Zone to the front page, are we? Cuz' that'd be a pretty big mess, though I guess that's the job of Wiki members to fix and edit to a cleaner edition (If no one bothers, I could probably do a simple summary of the basic functions of the Ghost Zone). *shrugs* Either way, I am in full agreement that these two pages aren't simply needed, especially Amity Park's. (Neo Yi (talk) 07:01, 24 April 2010 (UTC))[reply]

  • Support - Those two articles fail notability standards for stand-alone articles. They don't have the independent, reliable sources for it, and there is no real-world information given (development, reception, etc...) かんぱい! Scapler (talk) 23:14, 25 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to include this piece of information about its premier, but I couldn't edit it myself because it is only mentioned in the first paragraph, which is off limits to editing.

Neutrality issues[edit]

I've come to realize that the second half of the article is mostly based around creator Butch Hartman talking up and promoting his own show. Now I don't personally disagree with what's said, but the article may need either a bit of clean-up or quotes/sources from other people, so it doesn't come off as if it was written by a biased fan of his. Seriously, take a shot every time you read "Hartman notes", "Hartman observes", "Hartman stated", "Hartman confirmed", etc.

Perhaps some sections should be merged; for example, there's no need to put ALL positive points Hartman has said about the show as titles, since they all perfectly fit under "influence and legacy". I also believe some info is pretty irrelevant (e.g. the fact that Hartman is asking for likes on YouTube is not something that's worth mentioning), while other stuff are repeated in a redundant way (e.g. "Hartman uploaded a video on this; Hartman then uploaded another video on this; afterwards, Hartman has uploaded a third video on this). --Gabo 200 (talk) 03:17, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
