Now in Thoothukudi District[edit]

Deivacheyalpuram (27 km)[edit]

This small village situated at about 27 km from Tirunelveli, enroute to Tuticorin, has a Sri Rajarajeswari temple and a Ram temple. A 72 feet statue of Lord Anjaneyar (Hanuman) has been erected in front of the Ram temple, to attain World Peace. Poojas are held at these temples everyday, with devotees thronging to it on Fridays and other festivals.

Kazhugumalai vettuva gounder koil[edit]

It was one of the important centres of the Jains, now in Thoothukudi District. The bas-relief found here are the contribution of Jains and are among the earliest of such works. The Vettuvan Koil (Siva Temple) the rock-cut cave temple is worth visiting. This is at present in Thoothukudi District

Srivaikuntam (37 km)[edit]

Srivaikuntam (now in Thoothukudi District) is famous for the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu known as Srivaikuntapathi Swami with a lofty gopuram. The Thiruvengada Mudaliyar Mandapam is rich with sculptures of Yallis, Elephants and Warriors. The Ekadasi Mandapam which is opened on Vaikunta Ekadasi days, contains exquisite sculptures. During the conflicting days between the East India Company forces and Kattabomman, this temple served as a fort. The Kailasanathaswamy temple is an another important temple. It contains six inscriptions of the times of Veera Pandiya Kattabomman. This is at present in Thoothukudi District.. Now a lot of Devendrar people live in Srivaikundam...Eg:Narayanapuram,k.t.k.nagar,Tirupuliangudi,Marthandanagar,pudukudi,Kulasai,etc

Bharati's district[edit]

  • It May not Be true anymore that the famous tamil Poet Subramania Bharati is from Tirunelveli. He is born in Ettaiyapuram ( 40Kms from Thirunelveli) which is currently a part of Tuticorin district. However until 1984, the present Tuticorin district Was also under Larger Thirunelveli District known as 'Tirunelveli' district. But due to administrative reasons, it got seperated and officially Bharati may belong to Tuticorin district now, However The Truth is that at his time, He was Recognised as a national poet from Larger Thirunelveli District...

Chockalingam - Who?[edit]

Will someone throw more light on Chockalingam? 61.0.164.114 03:21, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the mention of Chockalingam. AFIK, there wasn't any notable person from there with that name. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:13, August 8, 2005 (UTC)
He is still there in the third sentence. 61.0.161.28 12:02, 8 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tiru or Thiru?[edit]

Is it not desirable to have consistancy in spelling the word Tiru? In several places of Wiki articles Thiru is also used. Which is correct? And What is the official spelling used by the Government?

The name sounds like "th", but the English spelling used by the government of Tamil Nadu is "Tirunelveli". See this. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 04:02, August 9, 2005 (UTC)

Style and consistency[edit]

I would suggest this page requires heavy editing and review. Too many cursory and/or subjective comments --- such as the gripes on the government not caring for south Tamil Nadu which the author keeps harping on --- add little or nothing to the reader unfamiliar with the area and in search of factual information, besides being distracting and casting doubt on the authenticity of the rest of the information presented on Wikipedia!

I completely agree with you . This article is no way near to others evenif Tirunelveli is one of the cities. If one look the other cities like Madurai, Coimbatore, the articles are very much with more statitical datas.

Content Deleted[edit]

I have cleaned up the content and I deleted the following paragraph and put in an appropriate one line sentence for it

"It might be because of negligence of Government to create job oppurtunties in southern part of Tamil Nadu. A proposal to form a Hightech city park in Tirunelveli district at Naguneri by the late commerce minister Murasoli Maran become now standstill. This may perhaps be none of the government cares the southern part of tamil nadu. Many of the development works are being confined to the northern and western parts of Tamil Nadu."

If anybody thinks it needs to go back in they are welcome to but just review what I have put in before you do. Thanks!! Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 04:28, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In the absence of citations, we can't make the above claims (even though I know that the Nanguneri project is gathering dust). What you did is right. Thanks for your contributions. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:12, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think the article must greatly be improvised like the coimbatores, the madurais, the chennais with more statistical data and the inclusion of maps etc. I hope Nivus and Sundar can do it.

Saravan I see from your user page that you reside in Tirunelveli. Maybe you can improve the article by adding what you have mentioned. I just work on the article on hand. Almost forgot you need to sign your posts using four tildes (~~~~). It is much easier!!! Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 12:43, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have also cleaned up the Education section. I have removed the following:

1. Tirunelveli Medical College run by Government of Tamil Nadu
2. Siddha Medical College (Government of Tamil Nadu)
3. Engineering Colleges (Government College of Engineering as well as many Private Colleges)
4. Arts Colleges (Government as well as private colleges)
5. Pharmacy College
6. Physiotherapy College (Private - Devendrar College of Physiotherapy)

It has been replaced by this:

The city has government and private colleges in Medical, Engineering, Arts, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy fields.

As usual you can revert back if you think you have a more suitable content than mine or to the original. Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 09:17, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More content deleted and this time in Halwa section. I have replace the following content:

"The Iruttu Kadai opposite the Nellayappar temple is the hot spot when it comes to halwa. Also another two famous spots for halwa in Tirunelveli are Shanti sweets and Lakshmi vilas which are situated near the Tirunelveli railway junction."

with this:

"Some of the hot spots to buy halwa is said to be around the Nellayappar temple and near the city railway station."

City or District[edit]

Tirunelveli -- A city or district? Why other towns included in the City of Tirunelveli?. Tirunelveli IS an ANCIENT city with lot of historicle heritage & HAD PLAYED A significant role during the revolution of independance of INDIA (1947). lot of scholers & great revolutionaries were from Tirunelveli REGION.{born & based in & around}. The Region/district is named after its HEADQUATER, Tirunelveli.'hence its called Tirunelveli District. Tuticorin (now a seperate district) was part of "TIRUNELVELI" district until early 1980`s. it was Separated for ease of Administrative purpose. There is a segment called Tirunelveli district where other towns can be explained.

Mayor or MLA[edit]

I think it will be appropriate to include the name of the Mayor as the City leader rather than MLA (If so we have to also include the Palayamkottai MLA )Doctor Bruno 02:50, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the Mayor is a "leader" in some sense, while an MLA represents constituencies different from cities and whose borders may not even coincide with cities. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:25, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed MP and MLA information from the infobox. They need to be added in a separate section like ==Civic administration==. See Sholavandan for an example. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 05:29, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Though the obvious answer to this question would be Pandian due to the simple fact that Madurai is near than Tanjore (or Uraiyoor) the fact that Cholas had a control especially during the initial years of the second millenium cannot be ruled out because of the simple facts that we have places named like "Gangaikondan" "Thooraiyoor" in close proximity to Nellai. Thirunelveli Halwa[edit]

Thirunelveli Halwa is one of the delicious sweet which i had in my life time.

Can any one help/make the article to start from the left of the Map?

In this article it is said the use of Tamirabarani water is the reason for the taste of Halwa. It is not true and certainly illogical since the same halwa can be produced anywhere, by using any good quality potable water. In fact the river Tamirabarani is now heavily polluted. The specific recipe practiced in this region brings the taste. Over all good work. Please go ahead with the same tempo.

Fair use rationale for Image:Tnlogo.png[edit]

Image:Tnlogo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Copy-editing according to wikipedia's standards[edit]

I've been doing some extensive editing to this article, hoping to have it featured someday. Please feel free to discuss issues with the editing. I have removed extra content from the Nellaiappar temple section because it has its own article and most of the text has just been repetitive. Also, most of the images in this article are from me, and I find them to be 'not upto the mark'. If anyone has better images of Tirunelveli, especially old pictures - please share them!

I also noticed that many of the writers repeatedly use 'this place', 'this temple', 'this tank', etcetera. Under a particular section, I have made grammatical corrections, retaining the essential information and facts from other writers. I have also changed atleast 10 sentences which sound like "It is located close to the perennial river Thamarabarani". I think it is sufficient to use the word 'perinnial river' just once in the whole article.

Image copyright problem with Image:Palayamkottai.jpg[edit]

The image Image:Palayamkottai.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Tirunelveli District or Tirunelveli City[edit]

It is very difficult to distinguish this article from 'Tirunelveli District', and as someone has suggested earlier, kindly make any addition/correction bearing in mind whether you refer to the city or the district.

Also, the Temples section of this article is abnormally large for an article about the city. Can I suggest a separate article to be started on Temples of Tirunelveli, so that this article on the city can be clearly earmarked? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nijumania (talkcontribs) 13:22, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notable People, Railways[edit]

Is the ever-expanding section of Notable people really necessary? Even when the Hollywood article doesn't mention a single 'notable' person, I think Tirunelveli doesn't need to list its popular citizens.

Furthermore, even a city with the world's largest railway network London, does not have a section as big as Tirunelveli's Railway section!! Either the entire routing details are irrelevant and must be removed, or taken to a separate article. Please comment on your views if you want to preserve them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nijumania (talkcontribs) 13:34, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is the latest census report. But in the official announcement u have put the updates as of Feb 2010.

So kindly do the necessary modifications.

Tirunelveli city is having population more than 5 laks.

So that in future it can receive the funds for developing the city from JNNURM.

Now in Tamilnadu chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore are selected under JNNURM.

They purchased modern city buses under JNNURM.

So if the population is more than 5laks then that city will be selected for JNNURM.

Kindly make the changes according to the recent updates and help for the Tirunelveli city. Thanks in Advance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.248.76.25 (talk) 06:51, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Need for a separate or an exclusive article on the current Tirunelveli City[edit]

Dear editors and friends, 'Tirunelveli' can refer either to the town 'Tirunelveli'( on the western side of the Thamiraparani river ) or as a whole 'Tirunelveli City' (Tirunelveli+Palyamkottai+Thatchanllur+Melapalayam). It will be less confusing and more informative if this article is only about the town 'Tirunelveli' rather than the city as a whole. Therefore it is essential that a separate article on 'Tirunelveli city' as a whole be created. Kingstonberyl (talk) 13:20, 31 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

Bhargava is not reliable (Kalpaz is a Gyan offshoot, as is ISHA Books: see User:Sitush/Common#Gyan). William Hunter is also not reliable as a source, and I have doubts about quite a few others listed here but not enough time to go through them right now. - Sitush (talk) 21:24, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I know there was a discussion on Gyan - Kalpaz, Hunter - is there a consensus/policy anywhere? Ssriram mt (talk) 23:39, 25 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is a widespread consensus that British Raj sources should be avoided, especially for matters relating to demographics and history. There is an article for Hunter but you might get a better picture by reading around examples such as James Tod and H. H. Risley. To the best of my knowledge, there is only one Raj source generally considered worthy using - a standard work on religion by Hastings. - Sitush (talk) 00:06, 26 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Result: Fail

The article fulfills criteria 3 (broad and summary-style), 4 (neutral), 5 (stable), and 6 (images). As for 2 (references), 2a and 2c are fulfilled. I did not check the sources, so I will not judge for criterion 2b. Criterion 1b (Manual of Style) is also fulfilled.

Unfortunately, the article fails criterion 1a, which requires correct grammar. As it stands, the article has many, many grammar errors. Even without detailing every error past the geography section, I've discovered the following:

  1. On at least my browser, "agro" and "machinery" (3rd paragraph) are on separate lines. Either use a non-breaking space or a hyphen.
  2. "service sector activities like administrative services, agricultural trading, tourism..." You probably meant "such as administrative..."
  3. "Veterinary College and research Institution" uses very unusual (and probably incorrect) capitalization.
  4. "Tirunelveli is well-connected by road and rail" – do you mean within the city or between the city and other cities?
  5. "obtained the region by conquer or voluntary accession"; what does "by conquer" mean?
  6. In the 1st paragraph of the history section, is the word "the" used before "Cholas"? Be consistent.
  7. "in the black soil rich eastern portions" is ambiguous. Use commas and/or hyphens to clarify.
  8. "was repeatedly captured several times...in the middle of 18th century" is redundant, and the second part is ambiguous. Do you mean middle as in the very middle, so all the captures happened in the same few years?
  9. "Khan became renter" – huh?
  10. The article uses "BCE" and "CE", but also uses "Christian era". Be consistent.
  11. "head quarters" (History, par. 4) should be one word.
  12. "bifurcated" (ibid.) is not the right word for what you mean.
  13. "during 1986" – how about in "1986".
  14. "average elevation of 47 metres msl(154 ft)" – what does "msl" mean?
  15. In the geography section, use either "northeast" or "north east"; be consistent.
  16. "fluctuations in the monsoon rains or flooding of the Tamarabarani river has..." should be "have..."
  17. "Chilli and tobacco plantation was introduced..." – do you mean "Chilli and tobacco plantations were introduced..."?
  18. In that sentence, use chronological order.
  19. "The most common tree is the Palmyrah tree which is used" needs to make up its mind if it's singular or plural.
  20. "as raw material for the cottage industries" – are there really several cottage industries?
  21. "sheeps" (Geography par. 2) is not a word.
  22. What does "minor set of other animals" mean?

I am therefore failing this article. I suggest that you find an editor who can help you fix up the grammar here; perhaps check out Category:User en-N. Please feel free to nominate this article again once its quality improves. Ypnypn (talk) 03:23, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I will nominate for GOCE and will renominate. Thanks a lot for taking up the review. Ssriram mt (talk) 04:45, 9 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of work needs to be put into formatting and more references (specifically, in-text citations) need to be given, or this article may be demoted back to a Start-class article. Please use this WP:WIAFA article as a guide in the future, and perhaps follow a format similar to that of Kochi_India. Good luck. Ncmvocalist 10:36, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please try and follow the step-by-step guide of what to do for the most important sections in this article (some sections may not need changes, but this is a good opportunity to check just in case). Once you've finished editing the article in accordance with the guide below, and preferrably included more references (specifically, in-text citations), then you will probably be ready to re-apply for an assessment on the quality of this article. Good luck! Ncmvocalist 14:35, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The lead-in consists of text that comes before the Table of Contents. It is compulsory for this class of article and should contain a minimum of two medium sized paragraphs (~300 words), and attempt not to exceed 3 paragraphs. The lead-in should summarise key aspects of the city, what it is known for and its significance. The first paragraph should also mention its location and geographical co-ordinates. Use the Cities infobox to enter relevent details. The origins of the city name can also be included here along with the name scripted in the local language. Also recommended are the IPA and aural rendering of the city name.

===History=== The history section is compulsory for this class of article. It should contain between 4-6 paragraphs - if it is longer, then summarise! This section should describe the key events of the city starting from its origins to the current. As far as possible avoid political history except for key instances crucial for the city's change. The history section should be around four to five mid-sized paragraphs. If it exceeds six paragraphs move the detail to a separate article titled History of the city, and provide a summary of 4-5 paragraphs here highlighting key points in the city's development. Do not use subheadings. Recent history should also be mentioned. However, some recent incidents may be incorporated in other relevant sections like "Government and Politics", "Demographics" etc. as appropriate.

===Geography=== This section is also compulsory. Describe the city's geographical coordinates, location in India, altitude, area, region (Konkan, Deccan etc.), if coastal city etc. If applicable also mention rivers, lakes, creeks and islands within and near the city. Hills and highest point may also be mentioned.

Climate is compulsory. Mention the seasons, weather, when the city gets its rains and annual rainfall. Give the average temperature and if possible temperature records. Also give the range of yearly extreme temperatures. Eg. The annual temperatures range from a high of 42 °C to a low of 2 °C. The climate section can also be a standalone section. See Mumbai. For extreme temperatures =India&results=7&refer= this site has a good list. Units should be in SI with imperial equivalents.

If available, add a paragraph on the geology of the city. This information is optional. If the region falls in an earthquake prone zone; mention that too (see Earthquake hazard zoning of India and this UNDP report for hazard zone information).

If adequate information on both the climate and geology is available, then the two may also be included as subsections under Geography. See Sikkim.

If geology and climate are both included in geography, this section should not exceed 10 paragraphs.

===Economy=== This section should have no more than 4 paragraphs, and is compulsory for this class of article. Describe the primary economy of the city, the major industries, businesses etc. It should also mention the primary occupations of the city residents. A list of major companies can also be included. This section should not exceed 4 paragraphs.

===Demographics=== This section should not exceed 3 paragraphs.
