COSM[edit]

"trivializes"[edit]

Grey's approach to the human figure is decisively clinical, which conceptually trivializes the spirituality of his work.

This strikes me as critically POV, but I'm not sure how to fix it in its context. El Mariachi 07:19, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation Fix[edit]

Can someone help me remove the vision link in in the media paragraph, I'm not sure which of the two albums it refers to. Thanks in advance FlyHigh 19:16, 18 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What was his original last name?[edit]

It wasn't Grey. He says this in (for example) http://alexgrey.net/interviews/hightimes.html He changed his name to Grey (as in "the area between black and white") because he reached a conclusion that his mission as an artist was to unite polarities. But I can't find any reference to what his original name was. Not the world's most important item, but hey, it is the sort of thing you would like to put into a bio. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.135.193.2 (talk) 20:37, 22 April 2008 (UTC) Hey, somebody added it! *Sweeet*![reply]

Added name ", as Alex Kenton Velzy", and commenting here in case it's deleted again. 69.174.145.83 (talk) 17:54, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That last name needs a reference, or it will keep getting deleted. Do you have any proof that it was Velzy?Crboyer (talk) 17:59, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

He states his original last name is Velzy on his website's "About" page:
Alex Grey was born on November 29, 1953, in Columbus, Ohio as Alex Velzy. He was the middle child of Walt and Jane Velzy.
He posted on Facebook last year about his name change.
It is also mentioned in both his and Allyson's Erowid biographies, written by Jon Hanna. Idboehman (talk) 18:50, 6 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Which SCI??[edit]

The link to SCI goes to a disambiguation page. That doesn't help anyone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.243.102.250 (talk) 08:04, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Early Performance Work?[edit]

I seem to remember that Grey was more well-known for his performance work in the early 70s. I can recall that he did things like painting himself black, with his wife painted white, and they made love naked on a performance space floor until they and the floor were all a smeary gray. Another one where he tied himself to his wife, with a skeleton strapped on his back and a baby doll strapped to his wife's belly, and they walked in a circle for some very long period of time -- 24 hours, or perhaps more. Also, I remember that he was something of a nihilist in his earliest work, and recall seeing pictures of him looking very much like a proto-punk, with a half-shaved head (the other half his hair was kept waist-length).

Anyone have some more information about his work as an artist before the psychedelia period?

Also missing is the quasi-religious community that has emerged around the Chapel. They used to have regular "full moon" meetings and things like that. My understanding is that the community is quite ecumenical -- it's not a religion (nor is Grey any kind of religious leader), just a spiritual gathering of people who were drawn to the Chapel's beauty, and to friendship with Grey.

(P.S. This is very nicely done article. It reads well, offers interpretation of the work without slipping into POV, and is well-written.) StrangeAttractor (talk) 19:05, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
