Cover picture change required[edit]

Guys can somebody suggest a good cover picture. I visited this page after like one years, and saw that this pic is really not up to the mark. Apart from Hazratganj no other monument can be seen properly. Look at any other "standard" city page, the pics are much more clearer and larger though they might be fewer. So we need like four good and large pics instead of six or seven small pics!. Please look into this. Let us have some sort of consensus over this.

I think a Photo of Lucknow Metro,Hazrat Ganj,Gomti River front,Vidhan Sabha,Gyaneshwar Mishra park,The Residency and Imambara would be great...The photos on the City page are old and I strongly feel sad that no one has changed it yet..As a Lucknow resident it pains me to see these old photos.

Please someone change it or let me change it. Lucknowite7866 (talk) 03:58, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Photograph of Lucknow in the Information Box[edit]

Just a request, for those who are good at photoshop, is it possible to have a picture with Lucknow's principal monuments placed in boxes, the way Delhi, Mumbai and Jaipur (among other Indian cites' pages on Wikipedia) have? It would make a world of difference to the initial look and feel of the page. I agree with you. Please read my comment above.

Why don't you ask a more experienced photo editor yourself? It will speed up the process. :) MakingTheMarkWassup doc? 17:58, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Restructuring and Reorganizing[edit]

I have totally restructured and reorganized this article. I have been working on adding more media to this article and adding references. I also think that the prose of this article needs to be improved upon. I would continue working on abstraction and encapsulation of this article. Article's a minor mess. Seems to be more like a tourist brochure than an encyclopedia article. Amar | Talk 06:15, Jul 8, 2004 (UTC)

It's been more than three years since the above comment was posted, and the article still reads like a tourist brochure. Statements like "Courtly manners, beautiful gardens, poetry, music, and fine cuisine patronized by the Nawabs are well known among Indians and students of South Asian culture and history" are desperately in need of citations and/or revisions. Lucknow may very well be a lovely city, but the entire entry is so loaded with POV that it's almost completely useless. 75.219.231.16 18:12, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is hardly started. I will try an extensive writeup in a couple of days. Surely Lucknow deserves better! -- Mohan Ravichandran
Surely we have to re-do this article as there is abundance of content but every thing seems to be hotch-potch. The population data seems to be fraud[edit]

The population data is not as released by the Government of India, and the links for citation also don't justify the data. No website claims that it has touched the 5 million mark.

Rewrite[edit]

Hi, I am proposing that we rewrite the article from a NPOV. Let's just say that words like excellent, quaint don't fit in with the feel of an encyclopedia. Let's shape the content thoroughly so that this city of our's can be a featured city. Atif.t2 (talk) 00:16, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Faiz, I want to develop a consensus on the number of images in the artcile. I really feel that we should limit them. The pictures of foods and old maps really look unnecessary in an encyclopedic artcile about a city. Maybe we should branch out extra information about Lucknow, Maybe a page like cuisines in Lucknow instead of overstuffing the pages with images. Atif.t2 (talk) 16:44, 16 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WHY THE ENGLISH NAME?[edit]

Who gave the city its present English name "LUCKNOW" (LUCK NOW)?--88.24.240.40 (talk) 02:56, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It is not English name, its just Anglicized form of local name Lakh'nau, it has nothing to do with Luck or now.--Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 03:36, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

We don't seem to have an etymology for the name.

Two characters in the book Kim, highly regarded in India BTW, deliberately pronounce the name as "Nucklao". Which seems "backwards." Why do they do this? Does this altered name mean something in Hindi or Urdu?

It also implies that it was called this as a "nickname". While Kim is fictional, it tends to be quite accurate. The author was raised in India. Student7 (talk) 17:00, 12 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unencyclopedic[edit]

This article seems like it was written by the local business promotion bureau and as such contains lots of bias. I'm going to be taking lots of things out of it, especially the stuff that isn't sourced. Anawrahta (talk) 18:37, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Elevation[edit]

The infobox says the elevation is 128 m, while it is given as 123.45 m in the text. I don't doubt that both numbers are correct for different parts of the city, but it looks inconsistent so it should probably be consolidated. I don't know how the elevations of cities are usually measured: probably only at some kind of central point? In any case, the 123.45 number, memorable digit pattern aside, is ridiculously overprecise. 85.226.204.42 (talk) 10:31, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct. I did little bit of research and got following result:
Sr No Source Elevation (in meters above sea level)
1 lucknow.org.uk 123
2 onefivenine.com 116 - 133
3 dateandtime.info 131
4 weather.gladstonefamily.net 128
5 maps-streetview.com 131
6 thetimenow.com 124
Now with so much of varying data arises the question of what to select & put on article. Any suggestions?--Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 14:53, 14 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I never knew so many different (read incorrect) elevation data are all over the internet!
The correct one is 123.45mts. It is written on all the 'Lucknow' signs at the Charbagh Railway Station. It is there since ages. Seeing that only, I check elevation of different cities while travelling by train... One more thing I would like to say to back my proposition is, that GPOs are placed at the very centre of the cities, a place called the 'capitol' (meaning heart of the city). It denoted the base point to measure distance of other cities/landmarks from the city in question. So, in my thinking, elevation measured at the city's main railway station should be taken into consideration for the overall/average elevation of the city... Suggestions.[edit]

  • Remove Localities section, it's simply destroying and playing no important role. Add Neighborhoods instead and include topics like "Shopping and shopping-centres", "City-based clubs", "Parks and recreation".
  • It would be great if you convert those list (Cityscape) into paragraphs.
  • Avoid putting too much images like you did in Transport section. Meanwhile try to use good quality images.
  • Remove people from Lucknow, include them into education section.
  • of historical places can be cover in Tourist section.
  • "Lucknow Chikan" should exist in Economy.
  • Eventually, refer, Hyderabad and Kolkata articles. It will give you more ideas. Thanks.--25 CENTS VICTORIOUS  10:37, 13 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Needing additional references?[edit]

I see that User:SNUGGUMS tagged the article as needing additional references, but did not leave a message saying which sections need more references or which statements are under-sourced. Given that this article is currently nominated for GA status, I wonder if SNUGGUMS (or anyone else) could specify which sections or statements need additional sources. Thanks, Quadell (talk) 11:27, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I will tag accordingly. Snuggums (talk / edits) 11:28, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also, even once all content is sourced, this needs a WP:Peer review before it is ready for GAN. I guarantee it would not pass in its current state with so many malformatted references and image clutter. Snuggums (talk / edits) 12:17, 27 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a Montage[edit]

I am seeing someone deleted the Lucknow montage image out of a deletion request. This has happened with Uttar Pradesh Heritage Arc page too. possible vandalism -[edit]

" All of the individuals in this section ( Wadji Ali Shah, Birjis Qadra, Begum Hazrat Mahal) all have reported death dates well after the seige of Lucknow - could someone please check?

GA Review[edit]

This review is transcluded from Talk:Lucknow/GA3. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Reviewer: Dharmadhyaksha (talk · contribs) 11:10, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I will do minor corrections myself while reviewing the article. But on cursory glancing through, this one seems to need a lot of work before passing GA and chunks of trivial/travel-guide/yellow-pages like sections need to go away. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 11:10, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • After deletion of a long unsourced list from "Notable individuals", I don't understand why list of shopping malls and historical places should also be included. This is not yellow pages and historical places can be mentioned in prose in "History" section itself.
  • Similarly with "Press", "Radio" and "Internet". Where will these yellow pages directories stop? Such media houses are obviously common in large cities. Unless some house originates from Lucknow, I see no reason to list down all this trivia. checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 15:45, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. The trivial list still remains along with few unsourced stuff and external links.
  • The section "Sister cities of Lucknow" has no prose in it and I frankly don't understand what a sister city is and without that the section is worthless.checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 15:13, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. The content doesn't establish why it exists there. Also, unsourced stuff exists in it.
  • "Parks and recreation" section reads more like a tourist guide. Individual subheads under this should be removed and small condensed prose should be made. checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 15:45, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Partly done. Section is based on non-RS references.
  • Lots of information in the infobox is unsourced.
  • "Quality of life" is based on one non-notable survey and should also be deleted.checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 15:45, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Not done. The survey in itself should be notable to find mention here. Marketing agencies and electronic companies aren't really noteworthy of making such surveys.
  • These sources are not really WP:RS: indiamapia.com, indiaonlinepages.com, lucknowonline.com, maharajas-express-india.com, citymayors.com, lucknow.me, laxys.com, lucknowcity.com, visitlucknow, importantindia.com, Newkerala.com, iloveindia.com, lucknow.org, indianfoodsguide.com, thealternative.in, lucknowlive12.blogspot.in, joshgroup.blogspot.in, lucknow-chikan-house.com, Career-info.in, Successcds.net, Cmseducation.org, thelearningpoint.net, oneindia.in, Filmapia.com, KanganaRanautInfo.blogspot.in, Televisionpost.com, Justdial.com, Buzzintown.com, Picnic-spots-parks-lucknow.blogspot.in, stylesatlife.com, formertourist.com

  • References are not in uniform style. Many bare urls also.checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 14:54, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Madan Lal Verma 'Krant' Ref #102 is not considered RS.
  • Why is Category:Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama included on this page? checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 15:13, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • The article, on various occassions, mixes up data related to Lucknow city, which is the subject here, with Lucknow district. For example, "Bounded on the east by the Barabanki District, on the west by Unnao District, on the south by Raebareli and in the north by Sitapur and Hardoi" is not right here. " Different varieties of mangoes, especially Dasheri, are grown in the Malihabad block of the district for export" should be mentioned in the Lucknow district article, and so on...checkYDONE Wikiboy2364 (talk) 15:45, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

With so many non-RS references in use, replacing them is going to be a big task and I will continue with the review after that. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 07:37, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reply * List of shopping malls and historical monuments in included because its an encyclopaedic article. Also, I've seen similar sections on a lot of GA's on Wikis of Indian as well as foreign cities.

You may write the "encyclopedic" stuff in prose but not simply list random names.
  • There are some newspapers that originated from Lucknow and some media houses headquartered there. All are mentioned. Some radio sections can be omitted, i agree on that.
The Pioneer (newspaper) actually started in Allahabad and not Lucknow.
But make no sense.
  • Parks and recreation is a common section. Just see New York City. I can refer more but its in vain. Section just shows the characteristics of the park, Its not a tourist guide neither made like one.
  • Infobox will be mended.
  • 'Quality of Life' is a TOI survey. TOI is a pretty notable newspaper so Non-notable? i don't think so.
  • Category:Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama will be removed.
  • I agree with the district problem. I will look into it.

All other problems are those which i think are alright. I'll try to mend them all. Thank you. Wikiboy2364 (talk) 08:47, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please ping me when you resolve the non-RS references issue. Until that is done, which is a big problem, I see no value in listing down other problems and continuing with the review. §§Dharmadhyaksha§§ {Talk / Edits} 11:40, 29 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

http://asilucknowcircle.nic.in/fancybox/index.html

Etymology (Lucknow)[edit]

"Lucknow" is the anglicised spelling of the local pronunciation "Lakhnau". According to one legend, the city is named after Lakshmana, a hero of the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. The legend states that Lakshmana had a palace or an estate in the area, which was called Lakshmanapuri (Sanskrit: लक्ष्मणपुरी, lit. Lakshmana's city).

X However, the Dalit movement believes that Lakhan Pasi, a dalit ruler, was the settler of the city and is named after him. The settlement came to be known as Lakhanpur (or Lachhmanpur) by the 11th century, and later, Lucknow. Y

A similar theory states that the city was known as Lakshmanavati (Sanskrit: लक्ष्मणवती, fortunate) after Lakshmana. The name changed to Lakhanavati, then Lakhnauti and finally Lakhnau.[20] Yet another theory states that the city's name is connected with Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth. Over time, the name changed to Laksmanauti, Laksmnaut, Lakhsnaut, Lakhsnau and, finally, Lakhnau.[21]

@Þjarkur:, please change the X to Y According to a glimpse of the Archaeological department of Lucknow, the monumental heritage of Lucknow: The name of this city was named after Lakhna, who was the leader of the Bhar caste.[1]
@Shashi Kant Rajbhar: I was unable to find anything related to "Lakhan Pasi". I'm going to remove that as per WP:OR. But to include whatever you are saying, we need to have reliable secondary sources as well. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 15:08, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Lucknow was named second happiest city in India according to study by IMRB International" The third sentence of the introduction has many problems. The result of a single study really isn't that important for a city with centuries of history and millions of inhabitants, so please remove it. If you insist on keeping it, please move it to the end of the introduction (where it won't get in the way of the important facts in the first paragraph), put a period at the end of the sentence, add "the" after "named", and add "a" before "study". Thank you. 208.95.51.53 (talk) 21:24, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please add ADG Zone Lucknow name under leaders board as "leader_title5 = ADG Zone Lucknow" and "leader_name5 = S.N. Sabat, IPS". It's already in page detail but missed out in summary. As its an important designation under UP Police, people do look Wiki page summary for the name. Feathers228 (talk) 12:03, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How many train stations?[edit]

The article for Lucknow Charbagh says,

Lucknow Charbagh (officially Lucknow NR, station code: LKO) is one of the three main railway stations of Lucknow city for 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge trains

Meanwhile, the article for Lucknow Junction says,

Lucknow Junction (officially Lucknow NER, station code: LJN) is one of the two main railway stations of Lucknow city for 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge trains.

So is that two stations, or three? Could someone edit both those articles to clarify? I'm asking here, rather than there, as both are short stub articles and there are probably more eyes here. TRiG (talk) 20:50, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not done Sentence on large urban agglomerations in India in the lead is enough. Area is already included. Plus capital generally implies largest city in the state; only in cases of exceptions, specific sentence might be necessary. --Hemanthah (talk) 08:48, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
