Is Sam Cassell an alien?[edit]

What exactly is the issue with linking to "The Alien Origins of Sam Cassell"? First it was that the link was to a message board. Fine. The link I recently posted was not to a message board. The pictures of Sam Cassell as an alien are an e-phenomenon. They deserve to be linked on his Wiki page.

I was the person who first deleted the link to the message board thread, but I would tend to agree that the current post could belong here. Cassell as alien certainly is a very popular e-phenomenon, so I would argue that the current link in dispute should stay. Squeemu

Thanks Squeemu. As for whoever just removed it now... So what exactly is the problem? That it's a "joke page"? When did "joke pages" become verboten as Wikipedia external links? Especially when that joke is a subcultural phenomenon. I take it you'll be removing any external link to "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" on Kevin Bacon's wiki page?

What is this Sam Cassell e-phenomenon you speak of? Is it notable? If it's worthy of mention, you should ideally write it up in the article. Kindly take the time to read "What wikipedia is not". Contest it all you want, but I think you'll find that link breaks at least two of the rules.
The link has been reinstated and I have related it in the main body of text. It's notable that articles about Sam Cassell's uncanny alien appearance rank higher on Google than his Wikipedia profile in a search for "Sam Cassell". It continues to be a talking point on several sports forums and blogs and the original link has over 45,000 hits alone. If you need examples, I will begrudgingly fish them up. No, really - he does look like an alien. If you're allowed to claim that "Cassell is known for his feistiness and outgoing persona", you can't then omit the fact that he's known for looking like an alien. He is WAY more known for that then those things. - Site owner

Yes, you're right. It is an opinion. It's an opinion held by many people. What is also opinion, though, is your belief that this is not noteworthy. That is an opinion of both equal value and equal worthlessness as mine. To deny the existence of this e-cult would be to pretend that the Chuck Norris facts craze never existed, for example, whereas it does. The same situation applies here. You clearly have signed on to wikipedia just to cause trouble. Read the rules, the guidelines, the accepted protocols. Cite references. Present information in a neutral point-of-view fashion — You've done none of these things. Your website is absolutely silly, contains no merit, and is irrelevant. And don't use your site as a reliable source of references to prove your point. It contains nothing but pictures, and provides no backup for your argument. Wow, you sound fun. If this is the way that things are to be done, then may I suggest we pull everything even vaguely affiliated with opinion? And incidentally, how can you ask for a citation or evidence that he looks like an alien, when a picture of him dribbling is there staring you down as you read the article? What proof other than visual do you need when judging someone visually?

It's fair to say that you are not a person "who know's what he's doing" given that you haven't even basic Wikipedia etiquette, i.e. signing your entries. You seem to be the only person so vehemently opposed to the Alien-Cassell e-phenomenon yet you feel justified in asserting your will. Yes, keep - As mentioned, Cassell's alien-like appearance is a talking point on many sports forums and blogs and articles about this e-phenomenon rank higher than his Wikipedia profile on Google. Here are some examples of references to the Cassell-Alien E-phenomenon from the above search - there are literally thousands...

  • Delete - Shall we go through other articles and add popular insults about various public figures' physical appearance to those figures' Wikipedia pages? Does Patrick Ewing's page need a section about his resemblance to a gorilla? Does George W. Bush's page need a section about his resemblance to a chimp?
This argument is weak. Patrick Ewing's supposed resemblance to a gorilla is hardly an established e-phenomenon and also carries racial undertones. George Bush's resemblance to a chimp may be a popular "insult" but it is not comparable to the light hearted references about Sam Cassell's alien appearance (created by fans rather than detractors). --Wayniac 12:12, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not only is this inappropriate for an encyclopedia, but the argument above that "you can see it right there in the picture" pretty much makes the case for deletion. There's no need to explain what he looks like: there's a photograph right there.

  • Heck, I even found this article in the respected German political (!) magazine Der Spiegel in which Cassell is described as a relatively small player with a huge bald head much too big for his narrow shoulders. But exactly this head is it which causes Cassell's high recognition value and animates fans to compare him with aliens.

Can Sam Cassell be partially Asian, considering the shape of his eyes look Asian? Perhaps a great grandparent was Asian - Kate Beckinsale has the same case.

I've semi-protected the page for 16 hours to prevent any further speculative edits before the deal has been officially announced. That means editors for those articles are jumping the gun and violating WP:CRYSTAL.
Future events like the Olympics or US Presidential Elections follow a fixed pattern of dates and are expected to occur, while other future events like solar eclipses can be predicted with accuracy. Generally, those details can be added to articles without crystal-balling. Journeyman?[edit]

I'm about to switch the link from Journeyman to Journeyman (sports). However, I'm tempted to remove it altogether since I'm not sure this label is fairly applied here. In the context of the article, I think it's intended to mean that he's played for a lot of teams, but "technically competent, but unable to excel" (from Journeyman (sports)) is probably not a fair characterization since he was an all-star in 2004.Originalname37 (talk) 15:57, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sam Cassell is what a layman may call a modern day man-fish. It started when his father, a wealthy canadian businessman, and his mother, an eel, met on a cruise ship in the atlantic. They mated then his mother slid back to the sea. Months later Cassell slithered out of his egg sac and swam west until he hit Delaware. Coincidentally, Dana Griffith, then the owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, saw him and after screaming for nearly an hour in fear of his oceanically inclined face, asked him if he wanted to play basketball. In his screeching fishy wail he obliged.

  • I see four sources in the lead, there should not be any source in the lead section, but applied where the main article covers the statements of the lead - nothing in the lead should be stated only there.
College
  • The section is totally void of any dates until the 1992-93 senior year, when did he graduate? Attend MCI etc.?
  • "post graduate" should be "post-graduate" if I am not mistaken. I know "post graduate" is technically "after graduation" but I think the phrase is being misapplied here since there is also "post-graduate work", which is not after graduating high school.
  • Is there a link to the "Proposition 48 Standards" the text mentions?
  • No source for this time at San Jacinto College?
Houston Rockets (1993–1996)
  • "notably dropping 22 points" to informal a phrase
  • "22 points and seven assists in a game 7" - "seven" should be "7" since all other numbers are spelled out.
  • Only one single source on the entire second season?
  • "Rockets were swept out of the second round of the playoffs" again too informal in tone.
  • "Rockets management feared their window of winning another championship with Olajuwon, Drexler and Smith was closing, and looked to trade for another star caliber player." needs a source, it's subjective and definitly needs something to back it up,

The statement on his chemistry with the coach and "an opportunity that they could not pass up" does not seem to be in reference [14]?

  • "Cassell played for just that season." should be "Cassell played for in that season."

  • "'eight player" should be "eight-player"
  • The sentence starting with "On March 3, 2001, he scored his career-high of 40 points" is totally unsourced.
Minnesota Timberwolves (2003–2005)
  • The source, [22], does not actually call them "the best trio", it does say "highest scoring" that's not necessarily the same. And it definitely does not support the statement "widely considered". That is not neutral, needs to be restated appropriately.
  • "again dropping 40 points" the term "dropping" is too informal
  • "late-game heroics" is not neutral, should be stated what, have the actions speak for themselves.
  • "Cassell however sustained" remove the word "however"
  • The sentence starting with "The following year, the Timberwolves finished" is unsourced.
Los Angeles Clippers (2005–2008)
  • "traded after three unproductive yet overpaid seasons" overpaid is a judgement call, not a neutral statment and there is no source directly behind such a negative statement.
  • "injuries that season, and the Clippers" does not need a comma
Boston Celtics (2008)
  • "6 p.m. ET" if that is "Eastern Time" then the appropriate abbreviation is "EST" (Eastern Standard Time)
  • "a poised move" what exactly does that mean?
  • This section is longer and more detailed than several previous sections where he had major success, that seems lopsided and uneven.
  • Reference 54, and 55 does not seem to support the claim of "arguably the best bench" or that Cassell was even a key part of the bench
  • "a NBA-best 66–16 record" does that record still stand? Perhaps a "then NBA-best"?
