Boroughs

I take your point about consistency. But the article is much more useful with the figures included. Cheers, Hajor 12:44, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Re the "comments" column on that article -- if I find a minute, I'll have a go at reincluding that with more neutral comments (I think the whisky was biting last time): people and places kind of thing -- Zócalo, Chapultepec, UNAM, Frida Kahlo... but not worry about filling in the empties for places about which there's nothing much to say. Sound reasonable? Hajor 01:43, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! Sounds good, & what i'll do is just the harmless drudgery of merging the two entries on the LoPbN. [smile] --Jerzy (t) 01:16, 2005 Apr 29 (UTC)

Grailquest

I noticed you moved the article GrailQuest back to Grailquest. Although it doesn't really make a difference to me, it seems that the author of the books capitalizes the 'q'. Therefore it would seem more appropriate that the name of the page also capitalizes it. What do you think? -- Rune Welsh 18:36, May 3, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the merge of the two articles, the other article was better :) I checked the books and a few websites and it's usually written Grailquest. I added one new link, a site which lists loads of gamebooks, and that is how it listed there too. Of course the authors of the GrailQuest article may well bite back! --TimPope 18:40, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Marking articles for speedy deletion

Hi, Rune.welsh. I saw that you marked Stupid for speedy deletion. In future, please check that articles you mark thus haven't got good content in their page histories as this one did. It is normally fairly obvious when this is the case, because the subject will seem vaguely encyclopedic. Administrators should be careful before deleting, but, well, we aren't perfect! Cheers, smoddy 22:09, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Yep, CDVF is very good – I use it quite a bit. Did you know that it can highlight new articles? Or maybe you were victim of an evil bit of a new page appearing at the bottom! Anyway, no problems. Did you know that, in classical Greek, "talk" would actually be εἰπετε? smoddy 22:31, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I just have classical Greek on the brain at the moment... I'm stuffing my head full of Euripides. This neatly explains my current level of stress/insanity. Cheers, smoddy 22:39, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Map

Hi, I see you uploaded a map of the delegaciones of the D.F. May I ask you how you did to create the map? I would like to create maps of French adminstrative divisions, but I don't know how to proceed. Thanks. Hardouin 17:13, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I will certainly need your help, because I don't have Photoshop. Making maps for France is going to be very complicated, because we need 100 maps of the départements showing the arrondissements, then we need 342 maps of the arrondissements showing the cantons, then we need 4,054 maps of the cantons showing the communes. Total: 4,496 maps!! Furthermore, the situtation in France is very complicated because of the cantons. Let me explain. If I take an average département: this département is divided into 3 arrondissements, each arrondissement is divided into 10 cantons, and each canton is divided into 15 communes. So this départements has 3 arrondissements, 30 cantons, and 450 communes. For this département we would need a map of the département showing the 3 arrondissements. Then we would need a map of each arrondissement showing its 10 cantons. Then we would need a map of each canton showing its 15 communes. Total: 34 maps needed. This is a simple case. The problem is that there are cases when the communes have a lot of population and so the communes were divided into several cantons. So for instance, say in the same département, one of the 30 cantons has 15 communes, and one of these 15 communes grows so much that in the end it has 100,000 inhabitants, then what the administration would do, they would break down this canton, for instance they could say half of the commune with 100,000 inhabitants becomes a canton, while the other half of the commune is grouped with 3 neighbouring communes to form another canton, and the remaining 11 communes become a canton. So now we have 3 cantons instead of 1, but we still have 15 communes (the commune with 100,000 inhabitants still exists, but it is divided into two cantons). You are still following?
So because of this, it is very complex to make maps. I am still not sure how to represent it on maps. We should definitely have maps of the départements showing the arrondissements. Then we should have maps of the arrondissements showing the cantons, but the problem is when we have cantons cuting across communes like in my example. In this case I don't know how to represent it on the map. Anyway, I have to think more about it.
But first thing first, I thought we could start with a simple case, that is the three départements around the city of Paris: Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, and Val-de-Marne. These département are small, so there won't be too much work on them. Also, in these départements, the cantons cut across communes, so we shouldn't show the cantons on the map. What we should do is three maps, one map for each département, showing the communes inside the département (about 30 communes inside each département). For other French départements, we cannot show the communes inside the départements, because typically a French département has 400 to 500 communes, so it's impossible to show on a map, so that's why we need to break down into smaller maps of arrondissements and cantons. But for Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, and Val-de-Marne, we can make a map of the départements showing the communes, because these départements are small, and the number of communes is only 30-40. Still following me?
Anyway, I will try to find good maps of these three départements with their communes, and I will pass on to you, see if you can make a map out of it. Hardouin 18:08, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, they don't have detailed maps on the French Wikipedia. I think let's just start with the three départements around Paris, that will be our "loss leader", sort of. Then after that we'll see what we do. You can try first the Hauts-de-Seine département. Here's the best map I could find: [1]. What you need to do is put black borders instead of the white ones, including black borders around the département itself. Do you think you can do that? Then you should choose three colors (choose colours that are already used in administrative maps on Wikipedia, such as the one for D.F. delegaciones), and you should colour the communes according to which arrondissement they are into (Hauts-de-Seine has three arrondissements). Here you can see which commune is in which arrondissement: [2]. Then finally, put numbers on each commune: put number 1 to 12 for communes of Anthony arrondissement, then number 13 to 21 for Boulogne Billancourt arrondissement, then number 22 to 36 for communes of Nanterre arrondissement. You think you can do that? Probably the hardest part is to put black border around the département. Then I will put the map inside the article and put the names of the communes corresponding to the numbers.

Look, this is the map of Seine-Saint-Denis that I have done using MS Paint:

What do you think of it? You should try using the same colors for the Hauts-de-Seine map. The codes for the colors are:
  • greenish color: tint 42, saturation 144, luminosity 120, red 197, green 204, blue 51
  • blueish color: tint 131, saturation 191, luminosity 120, red 26, green 173, blue 230
  • redish color: tint 17, saturation 206, luminosity 127, red 238, green 119, blue 32
For the numbers, I used font Verdana, font size 11, in Bold. For very small communes I used font size 10. Hardouin 20:47, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, we have to have three colors anyway, to show the arrondissements. So no matter which color we choose, you're bound to have problems distinguishing them, no? In any case, the greenish and redish are separated by the blueish color, so it doesn't matter if even a minority of people like you see them the same color, because they are clearly separated by a distinct color. What's important is that people see the difference from one color zone to another. Hardouin 21:08, 20 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Hauts-de-Seine map is fine. Finally, you can try to do the Val-de-Marne département. Here is the best map I could find: [3]. You'll have to create black borders separating communes, and you'll have to delete the rivers. I don't know if you can do it. For the arrondissements, you can check here to find out which commune is in which arrondissement: [4]. Don't bother to write the numbers, I'll write them myself so that the font is exactly the same as with Seine-Saint-Denis département. Hardouin 00:55, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, you can check Hauts-de-Seine and Seine-Saint-Denis. I put the maps in the articles, and I put all the names of the communes. On your side, have you tried to work on the Val-de-Marne map? Is it too difficult? Hardouin 19:23, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I found a better map of Val-de-Marne and I have transformed it into Wikipedia standard over the week-end, so you don't have to worry about it. You can check the result at Val-de-Marne. Hardouin 23:27, 24 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez

Currently, Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez is listed as a copyvio. As such, a new article is supposed to be written in the temporary aubpage while the copyvio is worked out. So I think the best thisg to do is to move Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez to Josefa Ortíz de Domínguez/Temp, (which anyone can do since it doesn't exist). This is because the proper procedure for a copyvio is to delete it (so the copyvio isn't in the history), and then move the temp subpage to the mai article. The admin who deletes the copyvio after the alotted time period (I think it's a week, not sure), will move in the temp page. Ok, so anyway, I'll move it to the temp page now. :) --Dmcdevit·t 19:49, July 30, 2005 (UTC)

Red Link Recovery project

Hello. I have noticed that some of the suggestions that you striked out of the Red Link Recovery WikiProject list are suggestions that have been corrected or delinked. These links should be removed and not striked out! Please strike out only exceptions, I.E. suggestions that are incorrect, and remove the suggestions that you or others fixed. The striked-through suggestions will go on the exception list to be excluded from future lists, but if the suggestions are fixed, they will not be on future lists anyway. Also, please use <s> tags and not <strike> tags, just for the sake of conformity. Wiggin15 00:34, 4 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Photos in Mexico City

Hola! I'll be glad to get some pics of El Ángel when I get a chance, please let me know if you want any particular features photographed, or any angles that might interest you; I'm only asking because I saw the current page already has several pictures, and I wouldn't want to duplicate or replace anybody else's work. I still have to get some pics of WTC and the Polyforum... -- Roadmr 17:42, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mexico

Thanks for the msg you left on my talk. Yup, I'll take a look at those articles when I get a chance. (Mexican War of Independence is on the front page today!) Rfe creating a Mexico Portal, a Community Notice Board (there's one for the Caribbean, and the Argentines have one too), or just a plain old wikiproject -- definitely. Not so much for outside consumption (as a portal would be), or at least not necessarily, but as a focal point for all Mexico-interested editors to be able to meet & discuss. That's how I see it. Or we could just start using the Caribbean notice board, which doesn't have much activity on it anyway. Thoughts? Hajor 02:38, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

El Ángel

Good luck with the FA... Really, however, I think it's still a bit on the thin side for a FA. Can you not think of anything else to say about it? More about the district it's in? More on cultural references to it (Reforma newspaper, placas de circulación del DF, logo of the Mex/USA chamber of commerce)? Can visitors go up it (if they don't get run over getting over to it)? Could they in the past? It could also use more and better photographs. I'm not trying to discourage you, but I don't think it'll pass FA as it currently stands.
