MSDE acronym stand for....[edit]

From what I've come across from Microsoft, MSDE stands for Microsoft Data Engine, not Microsoft Desktop Engine. This link is to a technical document from MS on upgrading to SQL Server 2003 from Access. In the "Summary" section, you see the reference to MSDE.

On this MS page, it's labelled "The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000)". Confusing.

The mystery is explained on this web page (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms811092.aspx):

All references to “MSDE” indicating the original SQL Server 7.0-based “Microsoft Data Engine” are also technically accurate for SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000), the SQL Server 2000-based MSDE successor. Likewise, the below references to Access 2000 and SQL Server 7.0 remain valid for Access 2002, and SQL Server 2000 except as otherwise noted.
