  • For an article, list, category, help page etc. frome one Wikipedia only one link to another page (if possible of the same page type) in another Wikipedia is recommendet / allowed. Else bots can not add new interlanguage links to the existing set of pages (articles, etc).
  • What about zh:Category:各國城市? Could you please verify what category should link to it and place the link only there? If zh:Category:各國城市 has / will have subcategories you may link them properly to categories at en: etc. wich relate to those subcategories / reflect most likly what happens at zh:. Hi, I'm a zh.Wikipedian and the creator of zh:category:各國城市. I don't know what you mean by "zh:Category:各國城市 could link to other categories too", because "各國城市" can mean nothing more than "cities by country." Hi Cough!
One problem is that the name of the category means on thing but sometimes that category is used for somthing else two.
Another problem is that Wikipedias with many article names (en:, de:, etc.) differentiate more in categorisation. You have here the Category:Cities by country (what is the more like the initial content of starting Wikipedias).
But: It can not bee / it is not recommended that at xx.wikipedia you link xx:Catogory:Cities links both to en:Catogory:Cities and to en:Catogory:Cities by countries. The later will block the bots inserting future links. This is happen quite often both related to categories, lists and articles.
A third problem is that de: does not eaven have an equivalent to en:Category:Cities but somthing like Category:Places and so on. Other "middle-european" Wikipedias follow the example. Other Wikipedias have both Cities and Places.
The easiest solution for all the new comming Wikipedias would be to "start linking" the categories named as the translated word in their language for "City" / "Cities" depending on article / category naming convention in that language. Wikipedias without the Category:Cities i.e. having only Category:Places could / may link this too . Else they are going appart. What is your opinion about this?

I think all of the problems you mentioned above make no differences to zh.wikipedia. "城市" means "city/cities" in English， and zh.wikipedia already has a category named "zh:Category:城市", which can be linked to "en:Category:cities". "各國" means "in every country" in English, therefore "各國城市" means "Cities by country", as I have told you.
There is no equivalent category in zh.wikipedia with category:places or category:places by country, so you don't have to bother its confusion with cities at zh:. I hope my response could solve your problems. Regards.--Cough Talk 15:44, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Other issues[edit]

  • linking the subcategories as "Cities in XXXX"
  • linking to special subcategories containing "lists related to cities" (for example ru:Category:Списки городов)
  • linking subcategories containing "all cities"
  • "migration": It is a question of time for growing Wikipedias. Please adjust whatever links are required to existing links to other languages in order to avoid "ambiguousities".
  • "abstracts (in 2 - 3 languages at the talk page):" Such abstracts would make live easier. Visitors would know whatfor the category is used for. Together with their own knowledge about the categories they are working on they can link "on the fly". Gangleri | Th | T 14:25, 2005 Feb 5 (UTC)

Naming convention[edit]

I think that it's wrong to name a category Belgian towns, Finnish towns or whatever towns, because here we mean towns in Belgium/Finland/etc, and not towns inhabited by Belgians/Finns. With regards to the cities/towns, I think that there has to be some sort of unification, and thus we shall move every article into [[:Category:Towns in ...]], because actually cities are just big towns, right? In some languages there's no differentiation between a city (big settlement) and town (ordinary settlement) (we're not discussing villages here, which are minute settlements). --webkid 09:54, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Can we cut down on avoidable confusion?[edit]

OMG, here in Wikipedia there is a Category:Cities by country, a Category:Towns by country and a Category:Municipalities by country. Can't we just get them all put together under Category:Cities and towns by Country? For universities and colleges we already have Category:Universities and colleges by country. It's simple. Cities and towns don't mean the same across the globe, and those complex differences may be good for a lawyer or a diplomat, but NOT FOR AN ENCYCLOPEDIA. Say what?
