Opening comment[edit]

I've always found Pai Gow and Baccarat similar, since both use mod 10 counting systems. Is this connection worth pointing out in the article? 4pq1injbok 05:11, 24 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tone[edit]

User:Night Gyr added the {{tone}} warning to the top of the page. I'm the primary author of the article (thus far). How could the tone be improved? What about the tone is currently non-standard? – Quadell (talk) (random) 12:31, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't refer to the reader in the 2nd person (as in "you might want to..."). I took a lot of that out of the Strategy section. WmLGann 18:13, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient game[edit]

The current wording says pai kau is “thousands of years old,” which would put it at at least 7 AD. Do you have any basis or reference for this claim? I know Chinese culture hella old school, but AFAIK, no records to substantiate that go back that far.

I don't know if it's true, but it is mentioned in the first external link, which says the game ". . .originated in China several thousand years ago". That's probably where I got the factoid. Don't know if that's a reliable source or not though. All the best, – Quadell (talk) (random) 18:51, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the Chinese page and Babel Fish date it back to the Song Dynasty. So while that “thousands of years” claim is dubious, that makes it ambiguous as to whether it is now “hundreds of years old,” or “more than a thousand years old.” I might get around to googling later, but everything I can find (in English) is talking about pai gow poker, and I really don’t feel like wading through that now.
FWIW, I don’t hesitate to believe that “[p]ai gow is played in unsanctioned casinos in most Chinese communities” for a second. Will try and google or else god forbid get my ass to a library for reliable sources soon. —Wiki Wikardo 22:57, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. May need help from folks in Oceania or Lima or London to help

Multiple Issues[edit]

I updated the templates relating to this article and the core problems they are addressing are as follows:

  • No historical information even though the game has been around for centuries
  • Complete lack of inline citations and a Footnotes section
  • The article should be wikified with regards to its organization and an infobox should be considered

A reasonable article to use as a guideline for these changes would likely be Mahjong, but someone more knowledgeable in the area may be able to find a better example. - Meaning of Lif (talk) 02:35, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
