Comment[edit]

I'm not that happy about this sort-of-disambiguation page. An article about "Green Party" should explain what a Green Party is and list all Green parties (or link to them, like List of Green party issues does). To find different articles for Green Party, Green party and Green p/Parties is problematic, I'd say. Better change the Green party article and make everything else a redirect. But that needs a bit more work. -- till we *) 22:24, Dec 15, 2003 (UTC)

I've replaced links to this page with ones to Worldwide green parties#List of Green Parties. Can we ask for this page to be deleted? -- Jeandré, 2004-08-27t19:49z

Green Party (disambiguation)Green Party – per Democratic Party, Republican Party, Conservative Party, Democratic Liberal Party, Liberal Democratic Party, and even The Greens, which are all disambiguations or WP:SETINDEX. Note that there is another open request, Green partyGreen Party (see: Talk:Green party#Requested move, which obviously, I don't support). Relisted. • Support, caps differences do make a difference here, and the incoming links to Green Party appear to intend various actual parties, not the green party concept. -- JHunterJ (talk) 12:16, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree about the incoming links, but that just means we should fix those links to point to the relevant parties. This move won't fix the situation. --BDD (talk) 16:03, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I fixed incoming links to Green Party, there are no more. They were mixed, some should have gone to Green party/Green parties, while others to a specific party. – Wbm1058 (talk) 14:34, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I disambiguated four more links to Green Party, created since 24 October. This will be an ongoing problem. With a {{disambig}} tag on that page, bots can advise such editors on their talk pages. – Wbm1058 (talk) 13:16, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Probably, yes. A list of all liberal/green/etc. parties will rarely be navigable quickly or efficiently, so why have a dab page where we can have an article? --BDD (talk) 03:46, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Outline of green politics also has a "List of Green parties", under the section titled Organizations. Should the list be there? Wbm1058 (talk) 15:04, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And then we have List of generic names of political parties: "This list of generic names of political parties includes only lists of parties with generic names, not lists of parties with similar programs, e.g. liberal and green parties." Huh? Say what? "Liberal parties" implies parties with "similar programs", but "Conservative parties" implies parties with "generic names"? There is no such thing as a party with a "generic name", at least I can't think of one. Can someone disambiguate generic name for me, in the context of politics? Wbm1058 (talk) 17:39, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like WP:OR to me, and a possible deletion candidate. --BDD (talk) 18:26, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, do you mean that the distinction of "generic" vs. "similar programs" is WP:OR? Really, that's the only research I see in List of generic names of political parties. Just about all the items in that list are links to disambiguation pages–see WP:INTDABLINK. I believe the exception Where the context of an article indicates that it is discussing the ambiguity of the term itself might justify keeping the "article", as a simple list of links to political party dab pages. Per talk:List of generic names of political parties, I support the move List of generic names of political partiesList of common names of political parties. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:17, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
More the whole existence of that article. It doesn't actually disambiguate anything, and what's a "common" or "generic" name for a political party is entirely subjective. --BDD (talk) 21:46, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm moving towards your view, but worked on cleaning up that page, for the moment at least. If it is kept, I think List of political party names requiring disambiguation may be a better name which avoids the ambiguity of "common" and "generic". There is also a Category:Political party disambiguation pages which kind of makes the "article" page redundant. See also talk:List of generic names of political partiesWbm1058 (talk) 15:54, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Coming back from that sidebar – I found a similar party which we should consider too: Pirate Party. Pirate Party (disambiguation) redirects there, so perhaps this is a good model for the merged article you're advocating. I like that lead : Pirate Party is a label adopted by political parties in different countries. They found a way to make it work using the proper name. At this point I'm perhaps neutral on how these are named. The leads (ledes if you prefer) can be rewritten to fit either convention. I'm more set on wanting the naming convention here to be consistent. Maybe we should decide on a convention and write one. The result of the convention would be one of the following:

The original Pirate Party was born on Jan. 2, 2006 and moved to Pirate Party (Sweden) (move log). The dab was born on 1 July 2009 and moved to Pirate Party (move log). Prior to creation of the dab, other Pirate parties were listed in an International section, as external links and in {{Pirate Party}} (first edit) on the Swedish page. Interesting to see how it evolved. – Wbm1058 (talk) 17:09, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support Anyone looking for "P"arty is probably looking for a specific party, and this move will help them reach their target in less clicks. --Enric Naval (talk) 13:10, 20 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, and editors linking to disambiguation rather than a specific party will be an ongoing problemWbm1058 (talk) 12:16, 21 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
