Historic names in other languages[edit]

Either add Lithuanian name here, or remove Polish names from such articles as Siauliai and Panevežys: these cities never belonged to the Crown during Republic of Both Nations, nor they were part of Vilnius region during interwar, nor they has nor ever had any significant Polish minority. Someone tried to remove these names, and the arguement for not removal was because Lithuania and Poland had common history. So, there has to be a common standard then. Either we add names to all cities were they are different in Lithuanian and Polish, or we only add both language names to cities of Vilnius region and Suvalkai region, and elsewhere keep only the local name DeirYassin 15:16, 18 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

there is neither justification, nor need for using only one language; Republic of Both Nations was bilingual and tolerant; I think that should it survive, there would still be bilingual names; besides, there are Polish and Kashubian names in the Kashubian towns and villages (though Kashubians were never a separate nation; they are only an ethnic group with their own independent Slavic language) Critto

Well, if you don't like Polish names for Siauliai and Panevežys, and think you have a valid reason for removing them, then just do what you think appropriate on those article pages. Why are you dragging Sandomierz into this? Balcer 15:36, 18 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well because it was explained there that such things are appearantly eligible because of common history of Lithuania and Poland; therefore I thought that the decition is already made somewhere and decided to add Lithuanian names to various Polish cities too.
