WSYR-TV?[edit]

Costas began his broadcasting career in 1974 at WSYR-TV

WSYR is a radio station, not a TV station.

Au contraire – WSYR-TV was the former callsign of the station now known as WSTM, channel 3. The call letters are rumored to make a comeback on channel 9 (WIXT) sometime in the future. JB82 22:14, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

His Hair???[edit]

What is the deal with his toupee? There should be at least a few lines dedicated to his ever morphing hair. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.191.111.52 (talkcontribs) 04:54, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Most overrated sports announcer[edit]

I've always thought he was overrated, and his stupidity is remarkable. He keeps reffering to Shani Davis as being the first "African-American" to win individual gold at the winter games, which is true, but he is the first black period. Stop being political correct when being so is completely wrong! He does this all the time. This is bsd987 speaking; I'm too lazy to sign in. 65.10.95.229 03:51, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia[edit]

Can we have trivia be unique things only, not like a biography of him

This should probably be split up, a few categories off the top of my head:
  • Trivia on things he did as a commentor (interesting comments, special events, awards, etc)
  • Trivia on things he did in other parts of his life
  • Trivia on related things done by others (impersonations, references, etc)

The bit about the commencement address should be removed. It is inaccurate. He was the commencement speaker in 2002 at Webster University in St Louis. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.253.170.157 (talkcontribs) 03:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:1986 World Series Trophy Presentation Ceremony.JPG[edit]

Image:1986 World Series Trophy Presentation Ceremony.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:54, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contract Siutation[edit]

Does anyone know what Costas's contract situation is with NBC? Any chance he'd move to another network? I'd love to hear him do Baseball again but that won't happen on NBC, it seems. 65.91.102.204 (talk) 18:40, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Name-checked?"[edit]

The term "name checked" which appears in the media mentions part of the article isn't clear. Please use a standard English term that everyone can understand. Signaturebrendel 03:50, 22 August 2008 (UTC) Please keep Costas on NBC I have stopped watching the Sunday night football game. Now I don't have to listen to him and his POLITICS and remind me of his talk with Brokaw. Frank Pineda —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.231.17.159 (talk) 16:55, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

National Basketball Association[edit]

How was NBC "forced to (temporarily) remove Marv Albert from their broadcasts due to lingering personal and legal problems"? I think the word forced is inaccurate. --Weetoddid (talk) 22:01, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Medals[edit]

Bob, WOuld you please consider not to refer every 10 minutes to the number of medals US have won in the Winter Games. Your not alone all the commentators think its the most important thing about the WO. Let the results talk for them selves, its arrogant when we say we are better than you as we have won more, thats not the spirit of the games. It has the sound of Tiger Woods about it. Sorry you do a good job but don't teach our kids that this is the most important thing. Great performances speak for them selves. I like the US to do well, however; when we keep on saying we are better than you as we have won more we degrade our great country and antagonizes others.

Political Views - Gun Control[edit]

Current verbiage - quoted here (emphasis in bold are mine): "Costas suggested that Belcher's actions "[would] be analyzed through the lens of concussions and head injuries" rather than the fact that the murder would not have happened if Belcher did not own a gun, supporting similar comments made by Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock" - possibly reads as though an opinion is being given on how Costas' own statement concerning gun control is of lesser importance.

Also, based on other sources with transcripts, Costas is quoted as saying "In the coming days, Jovan Belcher’s actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows? But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe: If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today." Nothing is mentioned about "lens of concussions and head injuries" in alternate sources, e.g. USA Today, MSN, Foxsports, et al, which were instead the words of Jason Whitlock from an article being quoted extensively by Costas.

Actually, when reading the section again, I believe the intent is to display Costas' support of gun control. However, the current wording could be taken as opinion (other than by Costas, i.e. by Wikipedia) on how the murder/suicide would not have occurred if the player did not own a gun and such a statement is questionable (meaning without a gun, he may have killed her with his bare hands, a knife, a club, a baseball bat, so forth, then hanged himself as another NFL team experienced recently with an employee). 98.85.16.73 (talk) 04:02, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Latest revision (04:47, 4 December 2012‎ ) is much better, helping to alleviate the aforementioned concerns - changes along with seperate heading and additional details by ViperSnake151 are an improvement (imo). 98.85.16.73 (talk) 06:16, 4 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Costas stated that the United States' gun culture was causing more domestic disputes to result in death." How is that? U.S. gun sales measured by NICS background checks are up, homicides counting raw numbers or measuring rate per 100,000 pop. per year are down. Another unchallenged off the cuff stat. --Naaman Brown (talk) 02:09, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Tend towards agreeing... but did Costas not make the statement? My opinion is fairly similar to those thinking he should have remained focused on sports broadcasting and refrained from bringing his political opinion into the commentary. And, "His remarks received generally negative reactions from critics..." ["although some supported his views" (of course?)]. He (Costas) seems to be obviously in favor of more strict gun control which is his perogative. What I see as a problem (i.e. significant point of contention) is Costas' having used the game as his pulpit and many "critics" have stated much the same, with reasons including people watch(ed) the game(s) for entertainment, to relax, to get away from or would as soon not have interjected into the game such commentary, "gun control" politics, so forth. If he had not, then there would likely be far less (if any) reason to have a "gun control" section on his biography? 98.85.17.62 (talk) 03:20, 5 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I watched the half-time show tonight, expecting a temperance lecture from Mr. Costas after all alcohol kills more people than guns!!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by All for guns (talkcontribs) 03:22, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Later?[edit]

There is no description at all about his talk show "Later" it only mentions it ended. Did something get deleted? 24.20.2.106 (talk) 23:38, 7 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, there's a funny gap there. Must have been an edit that did away with a proper description of "Later". I would fix this if I knew the correct information, like when the show ran, and some supporting details. Rainbow-five (talk) 18:16, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
