Not totally accurate[edit]

It's not totally accurate to say that Essex County "continues to exist as a historic geographic area." It also plays the role of a state judicial (court) district. Bostoner (talk) 03:23, 1 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The historical intro is too brief to be any good. Counties originated in the judicial system. Our main ref, the 4-volume work, Arrington, is a good one, but apparently no one cared to do a decent write-up from it. I plan to see what I can do. I anticipate writing enough to fill out the blank space there, so it can stay for the moment.Branigan 00:43, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Removed non-encyclopedic addition to the demographics[edit]

"In 2006, Essex County received the dubious honor of being named number one on Forbes Magazine's list of most overpriced places to live in the U.S. The magazine cited high living costs and expensive real estate as the major reasons Essex County was picked over cities with higher mean real estate values (San Diego, New York, Honolulu.)"

Sounds a bit bitter. I don't blame the editor for being bitter, but I insist it must be kept out of WP. If life is a sea of sorrow, the intellect must find a way to ride over it like a cork. This reply as well as the paragraph is actually non-encyclopedic. WP knows no dubious honors, nor any overpricing. This is the pure land, here. Real estate is not expensive. Moreover, we aren't interested in the momentary economic fluctuations that happen to Essex county. And finally, do you think you are telling us something we don't know? What, you want sympathy? So don't we all. We don't need a Wikipedia economist to tell us prices are high. And finally, there is no ref except "Forbes Magazine." Mr. Forbes wants to get richer by telling us how poor we are. Cities, towns, etc[edit]

An attempt was made to list subordinate places, such as "villages." I first noticed that quite a few major subordinate places were missing. I thought I would find a full list and put that in. Here is what I discovered. Definitions by the Census Bureau and the state are in a state of flux. There is no stable list of definitions. Unfortunately these changing circumstances mean that there is no permanent truth for WP to report. So, articles on the topic have become for the most part obsolete, but because they are, they have been abandoned by the editors. Second, the list of possible subordinate places is very large. The northern Essex district site maintains an index of local names many pages in length. On what basis shall we select names for WP? Not only that, but just since I started working on this article, some of these sites have gone dead, presumably for updating. My judgement for this article is that the local places are best left off the list of cities and towns. That list is fairly stable. The only change not encompassed by WP is that of Amesbury from town to city. For a while the web sites and WP led us to believe Amesbury though a city preferred to be called a town. That hogwash could only have been a temporary figment. it is calling itself a city now. So, I am simplifying this list to the cities and towns, which are actually incorporated.Branigan 10:25, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
