The novelist Patrick O'Brian wrote a novel, The Unknown Shore which featured a teenage John Byron as one of the two heroes. The article currently says that Bryon accompanied George Anson on his circumnavigation of the World. However Byron was aboard the HMS Wager, which was wrecked on coast of the south of Chile. Here is an external link, to [http://college.hmco.com/history/readerscomp/ships/html/sh_098500_hmswager.htm "Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia"] which establishes that Byron didn't complete a circumnavigation with Anson. Byron didn't make a circumnavigation until later, again established by "Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia" when he commanded HMS Dolphin.

a correction as to Byron's rank in 1761[edit]

The John Byron article, and the article on the History of the Falkland Islands says that Byron's rank was Commander when he captured the Falkland Islands in 1761. In 1764 Byron commanded HMS Dolphin, a 6th rate. In the Royal Navy all rated vessels were command by a Post Captain. The parent article says that Byron commanded a squadron in 1760. Squadrons were commanded by Admirals, or by a Post Captain, who is given the temporary courtesy title of Commodore.

John Byron (II)[edit]

I found some info [1] here which seems to prove notability for him to have his own article as he is also the father of Lord Byron and seems to have influenced his works somewhat... are there anyobjections to start a new page on John (Mad Jack) Byron?--Sasquatch 20:40, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)
