RfA: The time has come.[edit]

User:Fennec nominated me on WP:RFA. I hope I don't get KILLED. I haven't even accepted the nomination yet, but vote for me anyway, will ya, buddy? blankfaze | •• | •• 14:18, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Request for comment[edit]

Hello. Thanks for reverting my page. I also thought you may wish to move User:68.36.175.254 from Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment#General_user_conduct Candidate pages to Approved pages. Hyacinth 19:48, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. Just to double check, you agree that you and I, the requisite two users, have attempted to resolve this conflict or these conflicts with Anon. Hyacinth 19:58, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I thanked you, as reqested, what more do you want? Hyacinth 20:25, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

  • sigh* I guess nothing. I'm sorry I got involved in the whole mess in the first place. Mike H 20:28, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

Rudeness[edit]

I do NOT think that it is polite and nice of you to start rumours about my person. Enough already! Thank you. (By the way: you look so cute with your "friend" ;) !) Rienzo 20:13, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

LOLOLOLOLOLOL!! Oh no, don't say that, Rienzo...you might be accused of "gay bashing" his "friend" (who's actually his transvestituted gay lover).152.163.253.6 00:23, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Vandalizing my user page, and insulting my sexuality are not rumors. They indeed happened. Not that it's any of your business, that's a good friend of mine in that picture. Mike H 20:14, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

You mean, a good "friend"?152.163.253.6 00:23, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Why do you sign your comments incorrectly? Rienzo 20:16, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)
I do not understand what you mean. Mike H 20:17, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

I imagine its because the name you sign is not your username. Hyacinth 20:23, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I don't understand why we're even having this conversation. Other people sign their sigs without their real user names all the time. Mike H 20:24, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

I imagine its because the name you sign is not your username, and Rienzo already hates you. Hyacinth 20:28, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

So know Rienzo hates "Mike H"? Very mature, Hyacinth! You're all martyrs, aren't you? Rienzo 20:38, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Yup. It's exactly like what happened to me. They all gang up against you for "harassing" or "gay bashing" them, when in actuality THEY'RE the ones who started with the harassment, rudeness, straight-bashing, etc.152.163.253.6 00:23, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Will you calm down, please? Mike H 20:38, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

Mike's TYPICAL response to something he cannot argue against--telling people to "calm down". Meanwhile, HE'S the only basketcase running around the Wiki, biting everyone's heads off!152.163.253.6 00:23, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Gay icons[edit]

Why is it that all "gay icons" are heterosexual? Rienzo 20:46, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Marlene Dietrich was rumored to have a lesbian affair. Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O'Donnell are lesbians. So that argument is out of the water. Mike H 20:49, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)
And if you are able to prove Tink Winky's sexual orientation I'll award you the nobel prize for science... -- Graham ☺ | Talk 23:39, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Good news and bad news[edit]

The good news and the bad news:

Good news[edit]

You sent me a really interesting message.

Bad news[edit]

The TV station article links don't follow Radiojon's rule about the articles for broadcasting stations. Radiojon says that the correct article titles for broadcasting stations are to always include the necessary FM/AM/TV suffix. 66.32.254.42 22:42, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I don't even know who Radiojon is. If he wanted to get it out to the people who are creating the page, he should have joined Wikiproject:Television Stations. Mike H 22:43, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)
One other thing to tell you is that Radiojon created the template, not me. 66.32.254.42 22:44, 29 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Again, if he wanted the rule to be passed around like the gospel, he should have joined Wikiproject:Television Stations. Mike H 22:45, Jun 29, 2004 (UTC)

Are you interested in endorsing this? RickK 04:42, Jun 30, 2004 (UTC)

Signed, innit? Mike H 15:02, Jun 30, 2004 (UTC)

Adminship[edit]

I have removed your nomination because you have been an editor for less than a month and it seemed unlikely that you would have been approved with such a short stay here. In 2-3 months, I think you would be an excellent candidate for adminship, and I would be more than happy to nominate you then if you wish. --H. CHENEY 18:56, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I have reverted my removal. You may now decline if you would like. --H. CHENEY 18:59, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Mike, not "too hostile". :-) But adminning takes a certain temperament, and I'm worried that you take things very personally here. Doesn't make you a bad editor at all! But it make it tough for you to be an admin -- we catch a lot of flak. I wouldn't have said anything, but I noticed you insisted on the reinstatement of your nom even though you were going to decline, and I decided perhaps it was because you wanted to see what people's reactions to you thus far had been. That's my reaction. A good, energetic, productive editor, who may have the tendency to be confrontational and borderline hostile, based on my limited interactions with you. I hope you don't take offense, but I thought you were looking for honest impressions. I didn't mean to make you upset in any way, and hope you will accept my apologies. I know a number of editors here I like, respect, and want to keep working, who are not in any way of the right temper to handle the troubles of being an admin. I don't think of it as a major deal, but perhaps I should. Once again, I intended no offense, and am sorry if any was taken. Jwrosenzweig 19:21, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I know this is going to sound like a copout, but you don't know me. If you get to know me, you will know why it seems like I "take things personally." It isn't as simple as that label. Mike H 19:22, Jul 1, 2004 (UTC)
That makes total sense to me. And it's why I said I thought it was likely I would support you for admin in the future, but that I needed more time to see how you do things. Not a copout at all -- it makes complete sense. I wasn't well known here for months, and have only gradually established in people's minds the way I "do business" -- I expect you'll do the same. Good luck, and if all goes as I'm anticipating, I'll be an enthusiastic supporter come September. :-) Jwrosenzweig 19:24, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I'm on the IRC chat if you would like to talk. I would put this on my talk page, but the whole "taking things personally" thing, and the reasons behind it, are just too personal to broadcast to everyone. Mike H 19:28, Jul 1, 2004 (UTC)
I understand. You don't owe me any explanation, Mike. You can drop me an email through the site if you like, but I'm not asking for that. I just want to see how things go here with you. I have confidence about it, but not security yet. Keep editing, though -- we really need your help, especially in your interest areas (which have been badly neglected). :-) Jwrosenzweig 19:31, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
So is that a no? Mike H 19:33, Jul 1, 2004 (UTC)
Sorry, I IRC very rarely, and can't right now. Is that okay? Jwrosenzweig 19:34, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Eh. Doesn't matter. Mike H 19:35, Jul 1, 2004 (UTC)

Your user page[edit]

I noticed Grunt making edits to your user page, which struck me as odd. It looked to me like his edits were a personal attack on you, so I removed them. If they were made with your permission, I'm sorry for editing your user page. I hope I did the right thing. Jwrosenzweig 21:40, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Weird, it looks from his talk page like you're friends, so maybe it was an inside joke. Well, if I screwed up, revert my edit. I thought listing you for deletion seemed like an attack. It still does, actually, but I can see where it could be a joke if it was between friends. Jwrosenzweig 21:43, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Fergie[edit]

Actually I quite admire her. And I'm English! How unheard of is that? -- Graham ☺ | Talk 23:38, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)

You actually want to go to Birkenhead? Make sure you're armed, and double count the number of limbs and extremities attached to your person as you leave. I'm a quarter American by the way, my quarter comes from Massachusetts. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 23:49, 1 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I'm afraid Gone With The Wind references are lost on me, I've never seen it (deduct 10 gay points).
Birkenhead isn't really as bad as all that, but you seriously do need to watch yourself there. The difficulty is that there is an extremely high rate of poverty in the area, a lot of people living below the poverty line, and it's taking a long time to put right. Businesses were traditionally attracted to the Liverpool side of the Mersey because of the commercial docks on that side of the river, and all the ship building docks round the Wirral have been closed. More and more businesses are being attracted to Birkenhead nowadays because of the lower rents and cheaper rates but then you have the compacting difficulty that all the decent roads for transportation of goods still go into Liverpool.
Graham ☺ | Talk 00:01, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Well as long as you've never been in serious trouble with the law you shouldn't have any difficulty obtaining a visa for the UK. Although they do say it's the hardest country to get into if you're a traveller from any other country that's not the UK...
I've actually heard of that rule with your grandmother come up before. They do it in this country too: a 92 year old man recently hit the headlines: he had lived in the UK since 1943 and was deported back to Poland because he got charged with a criminal offence... -- Graham ☺ | Talk 00:10, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Depends what part of London you go to. There are some really interesting parts. It's good to see that you're not of the brand of American who believes that England consists of London, Windsor Castle and Stonehenge, and that all three were built within the last century... We meet plenty of those in this country... -- Graham ☺ | Talk 20:49, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Soap operas. Right. Those are those things they have on television to fill the gaps in between the really interesting programmes, right? I'm not a soap opera fan: that's my partner Davyd's domain. He's the Eastenders queen.

I'm just trying to think of the programme you might have seen that best illustrates the part of England that I'm from, and unfortunately the best I can come up with is The Vicar of Dibley which was filmed just down the road from where I live. Scarily, life round here is just like in that programme... -- Graham ☺ | Talk 21:02, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Now there's a funny story about that. I belong to a committee and a couple of the members and myself once sat down and compared all the members to characters in The Vicar of Dibley. And yes, one of the members of the committee is just like Alice Tinker... -- Graham ☺ | Talk 21:43, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

callsigns[edit]

Dear Mike,

The issue of broadcast station callsigns has come up before on Wikipedia. A 3- or 4-letter callsign can be given to more than one station in a different service, so long as it has a different suffix (-AM, -FM, -TV; -LP, -CA, -DT). The confusion comes from the fact that the first station with those letters gets to use no suffix at all. Adding further confusion, if that station changes, then one of the others can apply to drop its own suffix.
Logically for most Wikipedia users, all suffix-less pages should be a redirect to suffixed if there is only one, or a redirect if there are more. However, I also understand those who want to be exact, doing it the same way as the FCC. The FCC also sometimes uses the "suffix" in parentheses to indicate what service the station is in, but again, this looks awkward and inconsistent to most Wikipedia users who don't understand what it means and/or why it's done.
What's your take on this? –radiojon 02:52, 2004 Jul 2 (UTC)
Mike, for the most part, I agree with Radiojon and think you are doing a disservice to the wikipedia community by just moving pages for the sake of "consistency". --Richardsur 22:54, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Whats up w the "other" vote along w support? Sam [Spade] 19:40, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Did you read the vote? It said that I supported the no personal attacks rule, but also supported taking grievances to email. Mike H 19:41, Jul 5, 2004 (UTC)

Yep, I kinda had to read it in order to be aware of it. I don't see that as necessitating two votes, but whatever, it's really not important. I assumed it was an accident, but if you think it made sense... Sam [Spade] 20:22, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

To elaborate: I have no problem with you, your few edits that I have noticed have been great, specifically of help to me. You sound stressed, which is more than understandable, though you have remained civil if short. Hope there are no hard feelings between us, and I hope you have not suffered vandalism as I have because of our unwanted run in with User:68.36.175.254. Hyacinth 19:54, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Yah, its one thing when people insult me, but it really got to me when they insulted my beau. I'm considering removing his picture. Sorry for the miss impression, hopefully it was not caused by my venting of stress on you, I know its sometimes hard to remember the entire Wikipedia isn't making personal attacks. Hyacinth 20:28, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)

It's possibly offensive, though I think its usage is largely historical, and in that context people were anti-semitic, so even Jew was used offensively. Then again, such was its usage that people could use it (relatively) innofensively. I think Jewess still should be a redir. negress doesn't seem to go anywhere, though perhaps it should redirect to negro. Dunc_Harris| 19:53, 5 Jul 2004 (UTC)
