I think the category name "United States people" (or possibly "U.S. people" if brevity is prefered for some reason) would be more appropirate and better in line with naming conventions here at Wikipedia when talking about people from the United States. -- Infrogmation 21:31, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

If you oppose, I will start adding people from Canada and Chile, and bet you will not find an article in wikipedia that will forbid me doing this. Let's be reasonable here. There is a List of people from the United States. People didn't want it to be called List of Americans, see the discussion about the naming. But this category can't be named People from United States, because it doesn't match with other category names in Category:People by nationality. Suggestion for new subcategory[edit]

I have an idea for a new subcategory...

I'd like to see a subcategory exclusively for natural-born U.S. citizens born outside the United States. There might be some difficulty with a proper name for the category. For example, "foreign-born U.S. citizens" would be too inclusive, as that would include naturalized citizens, who already have their own category.

I can think of a few people off the top of my head, with Wikipedia articles, who would fall into this category:

Shawn Bradley
John McEnroe
George Romney
Earnie Stewart
Dominique Wilkins

There should be enough additional people to fill a category.

Shouldn't ALL people of the United States--current citizens--be placed in this category? I realize that's a large project, but it should be done or this list is inevitably selective and incomplete.

people in Category American people[edit]

This category includes 26 sub-categories, most of which are not mutually exclusive. A person in 'American people' could belong to many of the sub-categories that exist now and could belong to additional sub-categories created in the future. There are also 99 individual people articles in the 'American people' category. This is by no means a complete list of all the people that appear in all the subcategories of the 'American people' category. And there is no indication of why these articles are directly under 'American people' and not just in one or more of its subcategories. Should the 'American people' category be made into a supercategory that is just composed of categories? If not, what should it be? Thanks Hmains 17:46, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I presume it should include everyone with American nationality regardless how many other American subcategories the person is categorized in. This will make the category very large but in this case, as with Living people, might be acceptable. I'll support the project but before I start adding all the Americans to this category, I want to make sure I have the approval of at least five other users. Pink moon 1287

I agree with you that it should be vice versa, and it is why this page has been on my watchlist for long. Here is what I found: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of people from the United States - I haven't read it all. I know that there is American (word) article where this subject is heavily treated. Renaming[edit]

Hi. I am not sure that the argument of frequency of people's assumptions is more important than the argument of existence of other meaning(s) (which are at least more precise, if not even less biased). I took the liberty in interpreting your comment with such summarization - i apologize, if i have made a mistake in this interpretation. In general, i think this poses a complex question of educative features vs. "stating the facts" features of Wikipedia. From my experience ethnic-related categories usually cause trouble. I remember reading a guideline that touches this issue, but I can't find it currently. Let me demonstrate this with a question: if Category:Asian American athletes category should exist, why not Category:American Asian athletes also.
