Brezen (singular brezel) are a common baked food in Germany, especially the southern part. It is related to the American pretzel, with which it shares its form and the salty taste. However unlike the hard and small pretzel, a breze is about 15cm wide, with a soft inside and a crunchy outside.

Brezen are eaten for breakfast and as a snack.

(In German: Brezel(singular), Brezeln(plural) used as Standard German and in Swabian Dialekt; Brezen used in Bavaria Dialekt.)


Hi there! Brezen don't have to be soft inside, there's also a widespread version that is big and hard, and is completely crispy. The soft one is usually referred to as "Laugenbreze" or "Bierbreze" (in Tyrol). Greetings from Innsbruck ;) -- Mnolf 13:26, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Name change?[edit]

Does anyone object to moving this to Brezel? That seems to be the most common name. Both Duden and Wahrig define the word under Brezel, with Duden giving der Brezen (pl. die Brezen) as an Austrian variant and Wahrig giving Bretzel as a Swiss variant. Neither of them gives any indication of the existence of a variant Breze. Also, German Wikipedia uses Brezel. Angr (talkcontribs) 21:24, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In bavaria we say "Brez'n" which is somewhat like an abbreviation of Brezen ;-) And it's most likely not called "Riesenbrezen" but "Wiesenbrezen", because here in bavaria we call the Oktoberfest Wies'n (meadow).


Merger[edit]

I agree with the request for merger. Pretzel is a large enough article that breze could be a subsection. JD79 23:37, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
