Ceauşescu[edit]

I'm hoping you might help in sorting out the remaining dispute at Nicolae Ceauşescu. I've sorted out what I think should be relatively uncontroversial, and I've made comments on the remainder.

List of Romanian words with unknown origin[edit]

hi there Bogdan, is there such a "list of romanian words with unknown origin" ? should we make such an article ?

That would be a rather long list. It would be better to make it in the Wiktionary. Anyway, I'll try to make a program which will create the list, according to DEX (from the database at http://dexonline.ro Bogdan | Talk 10:24, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

a new "dacian connection" just poped-up in my head, i'm seeing a connection between romanian "baiat" and english "boy" :0) -- Criztu 23:44, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I heard about this idea before. :-) The English word "boy" has an obscure etymology and since a Dacian legion of the Roman Army was stationed in Britain... there was this connection, but anyway, there's absolutely no proof for this. Bogdan | Talk 10:24, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Could you have a look at User:CristianTota's recent edit to Dacia (disambiguation). I'm hesitant to just revert, but it seems "cranky" to me, especially the precision of "14%". Transylvania region[edit]

ok, there are Ardeal, Banat, Crisana and Maramures regions, and there is a "historic Principality of Transylvania", so i think it is wrong(or more exactly Irredentist Propaganda) to have an article saying "Bihor is a county in Transylvania region"... am I right ? -- Criztu 20:38, 19 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The way I understand it Transylvania = Ardeal + Banat + Crisana + Maramures. Pretty much the same way in which Wallachia = Oltenia + Muntenia. Regarding your observation, correct is "Bihor is a country in Romania". Then it can be added that it is part of a historic region. MihaiC 08:07, 24 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ancient Greek words borrowed by Dacians[edit]

Hi Bogdan, in a recent addition to Origin of Romanians you wrote that some ancient Greek borrowings are considered to be words that Dacians borrowed from Greeks, something that I agree with and an idea that I use as well. I'm just wondering what linguists affirm that, so I can read up on their works. Some ancient Greek words are also considered to have entered via Classical/Late Latin (as you probably know). Sorin Olteanu wrote something about ancient borrowings from Greek.
Anyway, there are some phonetic corespondences, such as Greek "s" -> Romanian "ts", which could be a paralel Albanian "s" <-> Romanian "ts".
sigalos / ţigaie (DEX: et. nec.)
selinon / ţelină (DEX: ngr.)
syrinx / ţur (+suf. ţurloi, ţurcă, ţurţur, etc) (DEX: et. nec.)
Of them, ţigaie and ţurloi/ţurcă are related to the life of a shepherd.

What Sorin Olteanu is arguing in most cases is that the correspondances are cognates, and are evidence for the theory that Daco-Thracian was akin to Greco-Macedonian. In other cases he states that words such as syrinx were borrowed by ancient Greeks from Thracian shepherds. Decius 08:23, 31 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I've just reread Olteanu's essay again to double-check, and unless I'm mistaken, he doesn't suggest that any one of the words he is discussing was borrowed from Greek, so Sorin Olteanu cannot be used as reference, because he's saying the words are either 1) cognates, which show Daco-Thracic & Greek linguistic relation; 2) or he considers them as words that ancient Greeks borrowed from Thracians (for example, according to him syrinx cannot be native to Greek). At the top of his essay, he says that there are three already accepted layers of Romanian-Greek lexical relations: and these three consist of Romanian borrowings from Greek (indirectly or directly); he's saying that a fourth older layer of lexical relations (not borrowings) must exist, and from the examples that he then gives, he doesn't say that any of those words originate from Greek, so the fourth old layer is not just another layer of borrowings like the newer three. Getting down to business[edit]

Greetings Bogdan, I made some much needed revisions to the Thracian language page. It was time to represent the Thracian-Albanian theory more, to get into details about the Balto-Slavic models, and to make public some of Sorin Paliga's work. Hope you can help the article to improve also. It is time to apply precision and detail and not let certain schools sway this Wikipedia article, when in fact there is plenty of data in favor of other views. Decius 12:05, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Of course, I still personally reject the view that Daco-Thracian was Albanic (or Albanic was Daco-Thracic), but nevertheless some affinity existed (as I always suggested anyway), and relevant Albanian-Thracian info should be added. Rosseti's work is mostly centred on the Romanian and Albanian "Dacian" words, trying to find the phonetical changes (from PIE to the "common ancestor" and from the common ancestor to Albanian and Romanian) and not much about the actual Thracian language. Thanks, just that information alone is important and gives me an idea of Rosseti's views, which probably chime with Vladimir Georgiev's splitting of Dacian from Thracian. I didn't know whether Rosseti considered Dacian and Thracian as very close languages (the view held by many, including Olteanu) or as rather separate languages (Georgiev, etc.). My romanian is about 6-7 years rusty, and I was never too good writing things without awkward wording. Excuse me for intruding, but I couldn't resist: how can you be born in Romania, and have immigrated from Romania in 1999, yet you do not know about Moldova, the large region in Romania, and the independent Republic of Moldova immediately adjacent to it, which is populated by a majority of Romanians? Dear Bod: Hi! Thank you for asking me tom provide an article on the page I originated about the Neighborhood watch. It seems that they changed their name since I wrote it, without much public hoopla. I found them still, it's called The Minuteman project now.

Im against the group. Not because Im illegal here; I am legal because I was born in Puerto Rico. But, #1, as a Latin American, Mexicans and those coming from other Latin countries are my brothers in language and culture, #2, They come to the United States because of our own fault (Im including myself in this). Eusually, when we go back to our countries, we built a dream on them that this country is filled with gold, telling them how many cars, tv's homes, etx we own, and these people starve in their countries so what are they going to want to do? Come to America!!! #3 and the biggest reason I oppose the group, is that the Minutemen are nowhere to be seen around the Canada border. Canadians are White, like them, and so, yeah I think its a racist group. I hope you understand why I wrote about them then. I feel its important that people know about them, but I left my opinion out.

Well, your input was vry valuable in my talk page. Otherwise I wouldnt have noticed they changed their name. I found a link with the new name too. It will be easier now to find them on the internet.

Hi Antonio and thank you for updating the page. Actually, the reason I asked you about this was because I posted a link to the article on a forum and I got a reply about the lack of references and something like "you know that the wiki can be sometimes unreliable". :-)
About the immigration to the US: well... I think that Chomsky is right when he says that racism still has an important part in today's international politics. The contradictory official policy of the US is that they agree with hiring foreigners ("outsourcing"), but as long as they stay in their own countries.
