Dambudzo Marechera defies myopic literary classifications.to follow his thought tracks is somewhat a walk between that fine divide that separates reality and insanity.to get an insight into his world one not only has to read a section of his work but his unfortunatley small amount of surviving material.in the many discussions i've had over the years at least with Zimbabweans there is a strong feeling that he surely is in a class of his own.the sad truth is his work has been driven into obscurity in his own counrty by the gibberish of political correctness.for me what is mindboggling is his use of language to say things in a manner that leaves the reader aghast nomatter how many times you read his work.his poetry compilation Cemetry of Mind comes to mind.to quote from his poem Throne Of Bayonets,'were regrets basket chairs we would be condemned to sit for life,to sit still passionatley;the Siamese cats nuzzle against my ankle,purring'.to me he is an avent garde writer and i have yet to see any writer with so much original thought and style in thier work. His use of original idioms has to be one of the best.

Have noticed that Scrapiron Blues has not been mentioned on this page, I have seen it whilst reseaching a project and do not feel like i know enough to write anything. 25/6- Muti is a Zimbabwean term used to describe witchcraft or drugs, that may be for either healing or cursing purposes. So it is either his mother planned on making him feel better for some unknown reason, or someone involved with it planned on killing him. However, one can doubt that he was cursed, rather poisoned

Leeds University[edit]

"Nevertheless, Leeds University offered him a position as writer-in-residence - something that Marechera liked to misrepresent as a professorship, though this may have been part of his eccentric tendency to have several narratives for virtually everything about himself."

This is an unsourced claim and as a result I have edited the sentence to: "Nevertheless, Leeds University and the University of Sheffield offered him positions as a writer-in-residence" and included a citation. It is well-known that Marechera experimented with identity and often took on the role of a literary trickster, but there is no direct evidence/citation of him pretending to be a professor at Leeds University. If an editor finds one, they can restore the sentence and cite the source.

There are some podcasts on him (6 english ones on Spotify - there may be more), quiet interesting: The Wiser Podcast from Witwatersrand; Sherds Podcast; but I can't really judge them. The German academic Martina Gosh-Schellhorn has also links to some video and audio (from Dailymotion) on her website. Humboldt University in Berlin has a website on him/ on their Marechera archives.
