Mother Tongue[edit]

Here are the proofs to show Dr.Rajkumar's mother tongue was indeed Kannada.

  • Raj's Gokak movement was for Kannada and he(along with majority of Kannada film industry artists and people) travelled all over Karnataka to request the rights that the language Kannada deserved. In various speechings during that movement, he has repeatedly talked about his mother tongue.
Reference: Old television clippings shown during and after Rajkumar's cremation rituals. (April 12,13,14 2006)
"What endeared Rajkumar to the Kannada masses was his love for his mother tongue. He actively participated in a movement for the supremacy of the Kannada language in the eighties. Rajkumar respected Kannada scholars and writers ".

In the documentary by name "Natasarvabhouma" on Dr.Rajkumar's early days, achievements, first 100 movies (all in Kannada), his goals and ambitions, his family details, etc. In that one, Rajkumar himself has talked in the end of the documentary and says this, in Kannada : "naanu ellirali, hegirali, nimmavanu; kannada taayiya maganu; kannada taayiya sevakanu. kannada taayi aalge, kannada taayi baalge. sirigannadam gelge." This sentence translates to: "Wherever I am, however I am, I am yours; Son of the mother Kannada; Servant of the mother Kannada. Let mother Kannada rule, let mother Kannada survive. Hail sirigannada (ie, Kannada)". This documentary movie is easily verifiable and is available from Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC), and below are the details:

  • Name: Natasarvabhouma
  • Year Produced: 1967
  • Occassion: When Dr.Rajkumar was felicitated with the reward "Natasarvabhouma" in Bangalore.
  • Production: Bharath Enterprises.

I assume you are referring to Songs sung by Rajkumar for others section. These are film songs only; and the data present in paranthesis provides the information on that film. Here, the term "others" refers to other actors, not himself.
#89 was not mentioned properly earlier. I just edited it and removed the phrase such as "dont know" and added the information of movie name and the year of release. Actor for that song remains same, Narasimharaju.

mahawiki: The tamilnation.org reference that you provided to claim that Rajkumar's mothertongue is tamil, contains a lot of wrong information. There may be a village called Singanallur in Coimbatore, but there also exists a village called Singanallur in Chamarajanagara District in Karnataka State. My family hails from this village and even today Dr.Rajkumar's ancestral home is in Singanallur. There are no tamil speaking families in this village and it consists of only kannadiga families. For people who cannot comprehend english, here is the comprehension of the reference link on Rajkumar's mother tongue. Please read the quoted refrence completely before discussing it. Atleast read a few lines after your quoted text.

The reference [3] is in plain english, where Rajkumar clearly states that he was delighted to hear Bhanu speak in Chaste kannada. A sentence before that he says he was delighted to hear Bhanu and Mani address him in his his mother tongue (Kannada). I have added a few more references [4][5], where Rajkumar's contribution to his mother tongue is explained in Simple plain english. Please read them fully to understand the facts. A lot of talk has already happened here on the tamilnation.com as a reference, I don' want to repeat the same arguments again. Which one would look more credible, a Chauvinistic website (tamilnation.com) or a website which has a pan-national outlook (rediff.com). adding video link[edit]

i am adding a video link on youtube to one of rajkumar's memorable songs. i think the *average* reader finds this far more entertaining/informative than a collection of 100 films in which he played king or god or a policeman. i understand there are big-time rajkumar fans like Gnanapiti who demand that the article be exactly the way they want it to be, i regret wikipedia is not meant to be used that way. incase you think this constitutes linkspam, you should go and read what linkspam really means. --ti 17:28, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a source for providing entertainment. The video is highly irrelevant to the context of the article. Just because a few people find it entertaining, does not mean it has to be linked on Wikipedia. Many articles have youtube links showing songs of singers eg. Beatles#Song_samples, videos of actors, because that is an example of their artform. Only point worth replying-
If you feel list of films doesn't fit in the article, raise the issue in talk page. If all editors who contributed to this article agree, we can certainly remove that section. After all, that section is a hard work of some dedicated editor(s). As far as link to youtube is concerned, not many of us think it's appropriate on the article.

Memorable songs[edit]

The section Rajkumar#Memorable songs of Rajkumar seems bit odd in this article, and apparently just POV of some editor(s) who have generated that list. "Memorable" is a subjective item. Is it published in any article from any of the reliable sources? If yes, we can mention few of them as part of a paragraph, citing the reference. If not, we can completely remove this section. Fan site[edit]

This article is in desperate need of a clean up. The article seems to have had various edits by ardent fans whose opinions and edits have little value in a quality wikipedia aricle. "Waking up early in the morning", "drinking only milk" and also similar information are highly trivial and non-verifiable- and does not contribute towards the biography. This article should stop being a Fan site and start being a verifiable, balanced wikipedia article. As I have experienced some of Wikipedia's rules, some sentences in the introduction need references. Furthermore, the language resembles a fansite at times, and as I saw on other articles, words like icon should never appear in an encyclopedia. Proposed move to Rajkumar (actor)[edit]

I don't see any valid justification why this article takes the entire Rajkumar namespace. Possibly, it could take the Dr. Rajkumar (actor) namespace, or the Rajkumar (actor) namespace, but neither Rajkumar or Dr. Rajkumar due to the existence of other notable persons who have the same name. Therefore, it is only reasonable that the Rajkumar namespace should redirect to the disambiguation page Raj Kumar, while this article should be under the Rajkumar (actor) namespace, referred to in the disambiguation page as Dr. Rajkumar (actor). Introduction paragraph can be changed to: Dr. Rajkumar (Kannada:ಡಾ. ರಾಜ್ಕುಮಾರ್), born as Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Muthuraju (Kannada:ಸಿಂಗನಲ್ಲೂರು ಪುಟ್ಟಸ್ವಾಮಯ್ಯ ಮುತ್ತುರಾಜು) on April 24, 1928, died on April 12, 2006, was the most popular actor in Kannada film industry. He mainly worked in Karnataka and usually seen as a role model to Kannadigas.[citation please] He is popularly referred as "Dr. Raj" or "Natasarvabhouma" (Soverign King of Acting?) or "Annavru" ((Kannada: ಅಣ್ಣಾವ್ರು) (Big Brother)). He was called as the John Wayne of South Indian cinema.[1] He acted in more than 200 Kannada movies in a career spanning over five decades. Most of his movies were epic films (myhological?) in Kannada film industry. He was also a well-known singer, both as a playback singer in movies and as a devotional singer. His voice is referred as kogile kanta (Voice of Koel?). I didn't make these changes, particularly because I am not sure of English meaning of some words and phrases used here. But English meanings are needed for English Wikipedia, I feel. Neutrality[edit]

I have added the neutrality tag to the article. This article looks like a fan site of Rajkumar, rather than an encyclopaedia. I removed "Dr. Rajkumar", which I found in many places long back but some users keep adding that. Lot of such problems are there in this article. 'Dr.' title has now been deleted from unnecessary locations. The part about filmfare awards that was deleted yesterday has not been reverted in this article for lack of reliable sources. I did not add those tags presuming bad faith. I had this page on my watchlist for more than a year and am definitely not a passer-by. I was the also the one who expanded the Filmfare Awards South page before 1980s. The awards for Kannada films were given only after 1969. Rajkumar had won only 2 filmfare awards till 1980. After that he might have won 8 awards, but since I could not find any source, I removed his name from the list. The same thing happened for N. T. Rama Rao also, where some fans added that he won 11 Filmfare awards and that too ten in a row, which is quite hard to believe. This is a BLP, but it praises only about his film career. The article looked fine till yesterday. And now you have started to exhibit your fanaticism. The section that you have added has a lot of non-encyclopaedic material. Who bothers about these facts:

  • He never played a villain, and was the epitome of good character not just in his movies but also in real life. He shunned smoking and drinking both on screen and off.
  • He was always punctual for any shooting and programmes.
  • Always sporting a clean-shaven look, his dress code consisted of only white dhoti and white shirt, with sandals.
  • During shooting, he insisted that all the members of the unit should have the same menu and food must be of high quality.

There is a singanalluru near Kollegal which was a part of Coimbatore district in 1956.It is situated in Kollegal to Andhiyur Road. Explanaiton - Rajkmar was born in Gajanur , Talavadi Block - See these: [6], [7]
As per these souces here:[8] & "Imperial Gazeteer", only his father was born in singanallur. The sources donot say anything about Rajkuamr's place of birth. Had provided adequate sources that he was born in gajanur, although he has his father's birth place in his name.
See this map:[9] - The whole of Talavadi block is covered under "madras presidency"; We could see hassanur in there. Gajanur is to the south of hassanur, although there is no mention about it. The whole of talavadi block is covered under madras presidency.
See this:[10]. This src says that "Gajanur- the place where rajkumar hails from, is within the talavadi block."
Removed the POV edits of a former user according to whom "Gajanur was a part of mysore kingdom" - Completely Sourceless. Gajanur was never a part of mysore kingdom. The rediff sources simply say that, kannadigas seek the inclusion of gajanur into karnataka. The sources do not say anything about "Gajanur once being with mysore kingdom". The whole of talavadi block was once a part of madras presidency as seen in the map. All of these are adequately sourced.
@ User Vensatry: This website - website of Rajkumar Trust is not a neutral party source. It could contain possible pro-kannada POV. Sensitive and challenged data must be well supported with reliable neutral party sources. See these ones from "The Hindu" & "BBC News" - [11], [12]. According to these highly reliable neutral party sources, he was born in Gajanur. There is no question of countering these sources with just one "Rajkumar trust website" which is not a neutral party src. The Hindu & BBC are definitely more reliable than that and are neutral party sources. This is why i had provided multiple sources along with these, regarding rajkumar's place of birth. Well, I think that the TOI and BBC sources would be the best, per WP:PSTS. The website of Rajkumar trust is a primary source. If there is another reliable third party source, independent of the subject available supporting the official page, then we can list that in the infobox and say something like "It has been disputed whether he was born in Ganjur or Singanallur." in one of the sections. I agree, but never said Rajkumar's (trust) website must always be taken into account. I just quoted that as a matter of fact. As you can see, I did not post anything after seeing User:Niri.M's comments about the IP and never reverted the birth place, which clearly implies that I'm not against the change. Coming to reliable sources, even they make mistakes many a times: Rajini's year of birth is a good example. Comment to SOS This must not turn out to be a debate so as to decide who's popular. Anyway, I'd like to add a few to support my views. A google search on "Dr. Rajkumar" gives 1,420,000 results where as for "Rajkumar Santoshi" and "Rajkumar Hirani" the results are no where near this. The actor is widely recognized as one of the best actors India had ever produced. He has 10 Filmfare awards (a record which is yet to be broken by a Bollywood actor), two National Film Awards (One in Best Singer cat). Just for the record, even 3 Idiots won a National Award for Best Entertainment Film and many more. The Munnabhai series was considered to be one of the finest in the history of Bollywood and holds a notable legacy today. Comparing article traffic statistics (1, 2) and page links (1, 2) might throw some light. However, I wish to make my stance clear. I am not divulging that Hirani and Santoshi are holding a higher fad and I stand corrected for that statement. However, I still do not agree that this guy is more popular than them so as to push them into a dab page. Per what WP:PRIME says, all the three ways of possibly determining a primary topic have been analysed and in Google results, Rajkumar has overtaken the other two. In the article traffic, Hirani has a slightly higher designation and in the third, the "Dr." wins by a small difference. Overall, yes, Dr. Rajkumar emerges swaggering with a narrow margin. In this case, when one or more of the subjects are still living, Google search is not a fair indicator. Let's have a slightly more time independent Google books search (which keeps in mind both recent and past publications). For the Gbooks search of "Rajkumar" including "kannada", but excluding "Hirani" and "Santoshi", we have 1480 hits. For the search for "Rajkumar", including "Hirani", we get 250 hits. Rajkumar (actor) → Dr Rajkumar – Dr Rajkumar isn't just a name followed by a doctorate title, it is a whole brand in itself, it is more common than just "Rajkumar" when it comes to referring to the matinee idol. If you search "Rajkumar Kannada actor", you will notice that almost all pages commonly refer to him with the doctorate title. The Government of India unveiled a stamp as a tribute to him and that too had referred to him as Dr Rajkumar

Also if you watch his last movie Shabdavedhi, he is credited as "Dr Rajkumar", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNTVkO-8aYA&t=141s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNTVkO-8aYA&t=110s, same is the case for his 2nd last movie Aakasmika https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGxY6sEBo_8&t=99s, so for all prudent reasons and complying to Wikipedia rule WP:COMMONNAME , this article should be moved to Dr Rajkumar Appu (talk) 20:17, 30 June 2021 (UTC) Appu (talk) 20:17, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As per MOS:DOCTOR: "Academic and professional titles (such as "Dr." or "Professor"), including honorary ones, should be used in a Wikipedia article only when the subject is widely known by a pseudonym or stage name containing such a title (whether earned or not)... However, verifiable facts about how a person attained his or her title should be included in the article."
Other than the mention of Dr. in the lead, I do not see how or when the subject started being referred to with the title. He was given two doctorates - Mysore University (1976) and Hampi University (1999). Which of these entitled his name with Dr.? A mention in the article will help the cause of this move nomination. Well, the 1976 one because he's been credited as Dr Rajkumar in the film 1993 film Aakasmika https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGxY6sEBo_8&t=99s , also in a 1978 movie "Shankar Guru" https://youtube.com/watch?v=hPEgBgNTbO8?t=1033 and in 1977 movie Bhagyavantharu https://youtube.com/watch?=LNGVtyG7gLo?t=89 , he was the first one of his kind to get a doctorate and thus it was used heavily ever after. Now we only need a reliable source to put that in the article (No WP:YOUTUBE). What I find are only facebook posts and blogs that say this: "The title of Doctor in his name came after he was awarded a honourary doctorate by Mysore University for his contribution to films in 1976."   • Support per nomination. Since there is also an entry for Rajkumar (Tamil actor), the form "Rajkumar (actor)" represents incomplete disambiguation. If there is no consensus that the form "Dr Rajkumar" represents a stage name that has been used for a considerable period of time, I would also support a move to Rajkumar (Kannada actor) as an alternative form, thus obviating WP:INCDAB. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 21:05, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. Among other persons with the same name that have Wikipedia pages, this subject is clearly the most popular of them all. Results from a simple 'Rajkumar' Google search reveals that. So, why not have the others linked from a MOS:DAB and this page be just titled Rajkumar, because as Roman Spinner pointed out, the current title "represents incomplete disambiguation". As for the 'Dr Rajkumar' titling discussion, most articles refer to him simply as 'Rajkumar', although he is commonly known and referred to as the former, which would be my second choice. Consensus can change. But it is good to see whether the points made in previous discussions are still seen as valid. Dr title without the dot[edit]

The proper page should be Dr. Rajkumar, with the dot. Whereas it is currently a redirect to the newly renamed page without the dot. Jay (Talk) 14:15, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't need to. The point is that whether you or any other individual chooses to use the dot is quite irrelevant, no matter how correct you think you are. What would be relevant is either a consistent pattern of reliable secondary sources using the dot, or a consensus here that it's preferable to use the dot anyway. That consensus could for example be expressed in a naming convention.
Or we could look at other articles in Wikipedia that do use the dot. But we would then need to ask, do they do so for reasons that don't apply to this one? Which will bring us back to common usage and consensus. Consistency is really just another appeal to previous consensus here. Andrewa (talk) 20:12, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, WP:Manual of Style#Punctuation and spacing says the dot requirement is different for North America vs UK/Australia. However, the stamp image (and youtube links with English credits) in the above move discussion point to usage of dot. Also see this Phalke Award government website. Good catch on the MOS. So for consistency, we should go with the normal practice in India. The postage stamp is certainly evidence there... what other evidence can we find? That is, not evidence that the dot is particularly associated with this particular person, but rather that it is (or isn't) commonly used with this sort of construction in India? May I know why the infobox is what it is now?[edit]

Lead[edit]

@APPU, removing references from the lead is not necessary. WP:LEADCITE also says Any statements about living persons that are challenged or likely to be challenged must have an inline citation every time they are mentioned, including within the lead.
