Just out of curiosity, Tarquin, why did you change the word boombox from a Wiki link to just a word in this article? I was going to come back some time and make boombox an article, too - is there some reason why it shouldn't be? (As a comparative Wiki newcomer, I'm looking for guidance.) Seems like if we have ghettoblaster we should have boombox - a more common term in the U.S., albeit one that's less sociologically interesting. DavidWBrooks 16:33 May 12, 2003 (UTC)


because if the two words mean the same thing, we should only have one article for that thing. Make synonyms into "redirect pages" (find out about this on the FAQ), and by all means mention all synonyms and where they are used. welcome to wikipedia! :-) -- Tarquin 19:26 May 12, 2003 (UTC)

CD's in the 80's??[edit]

Boombox and ghettoblaster are not synonymous[edit]

This may be a fairly recent cultural change that has modified the meaning of ghettoblaster but, regardless of cause, calling 'boombox' and 'ghettoblaster' synonyms is not accurate. I feel odd citing popular usage rather than another reference source, but this is slang after all. For example, I have read (typically in audio & car magazines) and heard (in television shows like Overhaulin' and Pimp My Ride) use of 'ghettoblaster' that is not to refer to a boombox. Popular usage has extended to include home-audio systems (usually ones featuring a large, independent Subwoofer box) and, even more popular, large audio systems in vehicles. I disagree - the article appears to describe fairly accurately the use of the term ghetto blaster for the UK. Living in the UK I had never heard the term "boom box" before (maybe I live a sheltered life!). As far as I am concerned, what you've described as a boom box is what I call a ghetto blaster.IanB 09:14, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Recording With a BoomBox[edit]

I believe that the information on using a boom box to record should be more extensive. I myself came upon this article seeking such information and it was scarce to none. I believe that lots of people would appreciate this.

Decline of CDs???[edit]

I don't know when that subsection started, but it just can't be factually accurate. If something is slowly vanishing from portable systems, that is clearly the cassettes, not the CDs. I think that section must be entirely rewritten about cassettes, or altogether eliminated, also because the boomboxes with MP3/USB capabilities are still relatively rare. Slowly vanishing? As far as I can see, players with cassette support are nearly entirely gone. And when we're talking about portable systems, Digital Media Players (mp3 players) have largely replaced CD players already, at least for Private listening. Becuase as you say, real 'boom boxes' with MP3, USB capabilites are hard to find. Its a wierd distinction because this article talks about boomboxes (a very loud and public playing of music) but most public listening is private these days. Even before MP3 players there were a lot of small Cassette players and later CD players that just had headphone sockets and no speakers. Blah, I don't know. I don't even see a section on decline of CDs anymore RC Master 20:38, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly people in the UK have started to broadcast music in public again, using mobile phones instead of boom boxes. Some of the phones I have heard are very loud indeed. --Somethingsquare 10:57, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Professor Brothers[edit]

Wide stereo[edit]

Around 1980, some miniature ghetto blasters had a switch for 'wide stereo' to compensate for reduced speaker separation.

WRONG[edit]

Boomboxes were introduced commercially by various companies in the late 1970s...More powerful and sophisticated models were subsequently introduced. They are often associated with 1980s phenomena...As the decade progressed, manufacturers tended to compete more on price (often at the expense of quality), and smaller designs (often designed for simple background listening) became more popular. This era was prior to the introduction and cultural entrenchment of the Walkman style, personal stereos with headphones which would later displace boom boxes in popularity.

Wogbox?[edit]

I lived through the 80s and can't remember ever hearing the term wogbox and searching google all i can find are recent references which might well stem from the inclusion on here. Can i suggest we leave the word off at least until a genuine citation from the era is found, though why we wouldn't prefer to just forget the term if it actually was used i don't know. I suspect this is a case of wikipedia writing history. I.E. I am guessing it's a very British expression - Certainly they were commonly called that, and I don't think it was ever considered racist at the time, but then the time was the 70s and 80s and as they say "different times". I believe it was generated in the 80's by the british due to the rise of hip hop and mtv in which most hip hop video's saw the boombox associated with mainly black artists.[reply]

History timeline seems inconsistent[edit]

If the Norelco Radiorecorder qualifies as a boombox (doubtful, with my understanding of the term), similar products were prevalent in the U.S. by 1970, not "introduced to the American market during the mid-1970s." I had a similar Panasonic unit that I purchased in 1970 in NYC, and it was not a rarity. But I wouldn't really consider either my Panasonic or the Radiocorder a boombox. Both were mono units and not designed to blast really loud music. Also, the term "boombox," as far as I can remember, came much later. Biggerbuzz (talk) 00:44, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Now it has a USB port[edit]

Otherwise you have to wait for CD burning or cassette copying. It's pointless to stop dancing or other activities in order to prove you are retro. You can be both retro and compatible.
