What is barje in English? -- Zoe

Apparently "marsh" or "marshland". Google turns up some use of "Ljubljansko barje" as a single proper name in English pages; also sometimes "Ljubljana Barje", which seems to be half-anglicized. Sometimes "barje" is capitalized, sometimes not; I couldn't say what the canonical form of the name might be. --Brion
Yes, Brion you are right about the term. It is really "marsh" or "a swamp". The proper name in Slovene is Ljubljansko barje, where barje in this context must not be capitalized. If we have to translate the term into English, we probably would say "Ljubljana Marsh", "Ljubljana Moor", "Ljubljansko barje marshland" or something like that. Ljubljansko barje is a landscape from Vrhnika north of Ljubljana to Škofljica, a plain between the hilly Inner Carniola (Notranjska) and the Upper Carniola (Gorenjska) and the Lower Carniola (Dolenjska), which is not so hilly. In this area the oldest unknown inhabitants of Barje (now capitalized if we use the term alone, and we know for it...) have built settlements on pales - so called "crannogs". Best regards. --XJamRastafire 22:13 Dec 27, 2002 (UTC)~
