Solon Township (/ˈslən/ SOH-lən) is a civil township of Leelanau County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,562 at the 2020 census. Solon Township is home to the community of Cedar.

Solon Township was organized in October 1871.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 29.7 square miles (76.9 km2), of which 26.6 square miles (68.9 km2) is land and 3.1 square miles (8.0 km2) (10.40%) is water.

Climate[edit]

This climatic region has large seasonal temperature differences, with warm to hot (and often humid) summers and cold (sometimes severely cold) winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Solon Township has a humid continental climate, abbreviated "Dfb" on climate maps.[14]

Demographics[edit]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,542 people, 595 households, and 464 families residing in the township. The population density was 57.9 inhabitants per square mile (22.4/km2). There were 738 housing units at an average density of 27.7 per square mile (10.7/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 97.21% White, 0.13% African American, 0.84% Native American, 0.71% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.45% of the population.

There were 595 households, out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.7% were married couples living together, 7.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 18.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 2.95.

In the township the population was spread out, with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $47,448, and the median income for a family was $53,571. Males had a median income of $37,045 versus $25,481 for females. The per capita income for the township was $22,987. About 2.2% of families and 3.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.4% of those under age 18 and 4.5% of those age 65 or over.
