Miscellany[edit]

Wondering how to edit this U.S. City Entry?
The WikiProject U.S. Cities standards might help.

Deleted the following:

There is possibility that the name "Kaktovik" has something to do with Vikings from Newfoundland. Old sagas confirm that Vikings did sail through Hudson Bay and travelled to Lake Nipigon in 14th century[citation needed]. It is possible that some of these Vikings sailed to Kaktovik and encountered native eskimos and commerced with them. Word "kakto" has no equivalent term in Old Norse or Icelandic. Vik for its part-spelled Vík-means fjord in Old Norse. There are dozens of similar places such as: Reykjavík, Narvik, Upernavik, Makkovik.

There's zero "confirmation" of such in the Sagas, only comments that might be suggestions that have no concrete evidence to support them. Obviously, if this changes, it can be restored. Also, a one syllable cognate--probably a false cognate--does not equate to language exchange. The paragraph is highly speculative and completely unsourced at best.Mzmadmike (talk) 15:12, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Percentages[edit]

Someone should change the percentages of population, etc. in the article to eliminate digits to the right of the decimal point. If there are less than 300 people in the village, expressing population percentages to four decimal places is meaningless. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.182.112.44 (talk) 00:16, 1 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

official website[edit]

the website is for an unrelated (to the island) company — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.169.168.220 (talk) 18:24, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

error in Iñupiaq name[edit]

As a friend pointed out, Qaagtuviġmiut is unlikely to be correct as -miut is a suffix that means "the people [who live at X]". We're asking around among our Iñupiaq friends. Followup: The Arctic Slope Regional Corporation site confirms that it's simly Qaaktuġvik . http://www.asrc.com/Communities/Pages/Kaktovik.aspx Editing it. Village or city?[edit]

This settlement is neither populous nor does it cover a significantly large area. Editors keep referring to it as a "city", but it is much closer to a "village", as news stories usually refer to it, and as it has a population of less than 300. Would there be objection to changing the text to read "village" instead of "city"?  --Bejnar (talk) 17:09, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
