Re: Thanks[edit]

Well, thanks for the thanks :-) But you had me puzzled there for a moment—until I checked your contributions I didn't know what you meant. Probably you were referring to the revert on Gustav Wagner and the subsequent block of the vandalizing user: no big deal. However, I was tempted to speedy delete the article because at the time it was a less than useful substub. Luckily I had seen the development of Franz Stangl earlier, so I figured you'd get around to improve the Wagner article, too. In the future, don't be surprised or offended if someone just deletes an article of yours that just reads "Gustav Wagner (?, ?) nazi SS. This is a stub". I usually edit my articles offline in a text editor and upload them when they have a decent length. That helps avoid such problems. Keep up the good work! Lupo 19:05, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Done. See the page source for what I did.

Now you'd have to explain on the image description page at Image:Collie Ursula.JPG what that image's copyright status and license status is. The current text isn't helpful in determining whether the image may be used on Wikipedia. Are you Sergio Blancato? If so, add a statement saying that you took that picture, decide on a license, and add the appropriate tag to the page (such as e.g. {{GFDL}}). If you're not the copyright holder, then please provide a source, that is, state where the image is from, and again, tag it with an appropriate license.

And, BTW, to sign a message you can just write four tildes (like this: ~~~~), when you save the page, the software will replace them with your signature and a timestamp.

Hi, I was just coming here to say the same thing about the photo: Nice photo of a collie. Do please add the source of the photo (who took it) and its licensing or copyright info so that we can continue to use it guilt-free. :-) Thanks so much! Also, you'll see that I took out the collie breed links from the generic collie page because they're already on the specific breed pages that are referenced on that page. Buon giorno, Sergio. Come stà?

You wrote:

The image I posted for Collie is mine and I want to give permission to use it to wikipedia only. What whould I write and where?
  1. Do you want to give permission only to en.wikipedia.org, or also to other Wikipedias, e.g. the Italian Wikipedia?
  2. Do you want to disallow Wikipedia mirrors to use the image? Why?
  3. Do you want to forbid commercial uses of the image?
  4. Do you want to ensure that you're credited (i.e., that anybody who uses the image must also state that it is © by Sergio Blancato)?

I'd advise against allowing only uses on Wikipedia. Somebody else will probably claim that such a license was incompatible with Wikipedia, and that the image should be removed.

Images that may be used only for non-commercial purposes only have for a long time been fine on Wikipedia, but recently it seems like the owner of Wikipedia wants them all deleted. Personally, I disagree with this, and will try to find out why Jimbo Wales doesn't want them anymore.

Are you making money (or intending to do so) by selling the image to other parties? If so, I'd advise you to upload a lesser resolution image (say, 300 pixel wide) instead of the high-resolution one. A 300 pixel version has no commercial value, and you'd still be free to sell the high-resolution one, without running the risk that anybody else just copies it from Wikipedia instead of buying it from you.

The three best options for you are, in my opinion:

  1. License the image to Wikipedia under the terms of the GFDL. That ensures that you are credited, but allows anyone to use the image and even to make derivative versions from it, such a cropping it. If you choose this, put "{{GFDL}}" onto the image description page at Image:Collie Ursula.JPG.
  2. Release the image into the public domain. This is not an option if you do intend to make money from selling the image. It just means that anybody can use it and do with it whatever he likes. If you choose this, put "{{PD}}" on the image page.
  3. Use a Creative Commons License. There are various types, e.g. "{{cc-by-sa}}" (similar to the GFDL, ensures credit and requires any reuser to re-license the image under this same license), or "{{cc-nd-by-sa}}" (same, but also forbids derivative works). Decide on a license type, and put the appropriate tag on the image page.
