Cassette needs diisambiguating.

Is there someone who can submit a picture indicating the parts incl. reference numbers ? This would be great. Nyxos, 05.09.2003

Link changes[edit]

I changed the Cassette and Lug links to (nonexistent) pages that reference bicycle parts. I don't know exactly what cassettes or lugs are, but surely in this context they have nothing to do with home audio recording or Irish mythology. Skoosh 02:20, 13 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Changed to definition list[edit]

I changed the list into a definition list. Some of the articles--jockey wheel in particular--should be merged into the article of which they're a part of, or maybe made into redirects. Other than that, I filled in a few definitions. Leave the articles with major things (derailleur gears, bottom bracket, headset, etc.) with links as well as a short definition. As to whether the definitions should be complete sentences, just keep it consistent. --Christopherlin 03:06, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A labelled Diagram would be useful[edit]

Wow, this page sure has a lot of parts covered. But it would be more useful if there was a labelled diagram. --Louiechefei28848888 00:34, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Parts are defined in terms of other parts[edit]

A lot of these parts are defined in terms of other parts, creating a cyclic dependency. If you don't know any parts at all, you will be lost. :-( --Rewguy 02:29, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I have to second "the parts defined in terms of other parts" as problematic, but only in relation to namespace assignment. If systems and major parts of the bicycle, such as my suggested Cup and cone bearing system (having to do with hubs) are described, such ambiguity will be remedied. I noticed, for instance "dustcap" is defined in the name space as the piece that I call a "valve cap." I always understood the dustcap to be part of the Cup and cone bearing system, preventing dust from entering the hubs. If each small part gets a namespace, I suppose we will have to have a disambiguity page, especially if the author of dustcap feel the need to stick it. Somehow I feel that dustcap can be defined both ways, following a colon, seperated by a semicolon -- without either denotation being assigned a namespace. Cartridge bearings[edit]

Also known as "sealed bearings." Traditionally have longer life and lower maintenance than other bearings.

  1. Since whether a bearing is sealed or not is a separate issue from whether it may be disassembled, do we want to promote this mislabelling, or is there an authoritative source that confirms this? Sheldon Brown does not.
  2. Doesn't "non-user-serviceable" already imply "lower maintenance".
  3. Can anyone confirm "longer life"?

guard between cogset & wheel?[edit]

Is there a name for that sort of circular plastic shield that prevents the chain from jumping beyond the first-gear sprocket & getting caught between the sprocket & the wheel hub? Maybe that shield should be included in this bike-part article. The shield seems to typically be around the size of a saucer. Bo99 (talk) 23:58, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
