Note: not an authoritative nor reliable source, and of course completely lacks NPOV, but does qualify as "often cited". This one is certainly more authoritative:

... but one citation does not count as "often". Others are not hard to find, these are from the first page of a google search.

Ultravox?[edit]

I was intrigued by the quote that a remixed version of Skysaw was offered up to Ultravox for use on their first album. The cited reference does indeed verify this via a quote from Eno, so I'm not questioning its validity. However, it does beg the question, which track? Darned if I can pick anything out that's close to it among the songs on the album, and the album credits don't list Eno as a composer on any tracks. Warren Cann's interview of the early years makes no mention of it (in fact he minimizes Eno's contributions). I'm not suggesting removing it necessarily, but it's a rather "out there" factoid that, if true, is very interesting. Does anyone know which track Eno is referring to? I wonder if it was offered up but not used (the quote is vague on that), so perhaps it was a discarded idea. Anyone know? RE: DeRogatis[edit]

"ambient/art-pop classic" are DeRogatis' words. Otherwise, he would have used quotes if attributing it as Gibbard's description ([1]). Dan56 (talk) 12:34, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have two issues with the genre adding of the quote from Jim DeRogatis.
  • 1: The article isn't primarily focused on discussing the genre of the album.
  • 2: The quote in the article says "Gibbard has said that Eno’s ambient/art-pop classic “Another Green World” was the touchstone in the studio,". So who's calling it that, DeRogatis or Gibbard? I know you say he would have used quotes, but he could be just para-phrasing it. He also uses a slash suggesting the interchangeability between the terms, which is incorrect.
  • What could "ambient/art-pop" possibly be paraphrasing? It seems too unique. And wouldn't the slash indicate "or"? Dan56 (talk) 12:59, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • 3: What is art pop? It re-directs to art rock (for some reason) and has no genre definition for it on that article either. Giving the genre a name, and not even discussing what the style means does not help a reader understand what the article is about. The article it self already says "minimalist instrumentals are scattered among more structured art-rock songs", as well as Allmusic noting ""paced instrumentals that, while often closer to ambient music than pop, are both melodic and rhythmic", and are accompanied by few pop songs, including "St. Elmo's Fire", "I'll Come Running", and "Golden Hours".   • According to this, similar to art rock, but pop musicians who went to/were inspired by art school (Eno is listed as one of them). A Rough Guide suggests it's related as well ([2]), and Stephen Holden's article elaborates on how it aspires to classical and poetry values. I think the art rock article might be lacking anything about "art pop" because Google mixes it up with "pop art"; I had to search "art pop" with "art rock" to get these results. Otherwise, the sources would be more accessible instead of worthless results for articles mentioning "pop art". Dan56 (talk) 12:59, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As far as the conflict between the quotes about "art rock" songs and "pop songs", I think the sources are referring to the same songs, just characterizing them differently--both sources say these (art rock / pop) songs are interspersed with the instrumentals, so they're likely referring to the vocals songs, just assigning a different genre to them. DeRogatis' characterization of "ambient/art pop" is the most direct, and "art pop" is linked to the "art rock" article either way. I could add some mention of "art pop" in that article with those sources. Dan56 (talk) 13:27, 17 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
