My uncle "Coke" McKenzie was on the Thompson and told the story of the Star Fire rounds illuminating the E-Boats. He stated that his destroyer group destroyed seven (7) of the E-Boats and pulled a German boat captain out of the water. He said the captain spoke in clear English and said "Congratulations". The captain explained that he was excited to have the ships come in as they (the German E-Boats) felt strongly that they would prevail against the destroyers. The Star Fire rounds and the radar tracking surprised the Germans as they were completely exposed and they could be tracked and taken out.
