"Urban bicycling" is not to my knowledge a generally used term in English. The concept is probably better encompassed by Utility cycling which is the term under which most urban cycling gets discussed. There is already a stub for utility cycling and some of this material could probably be merged there --Sf 17:06, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is an appalling article that presents little or no evidence to support its various assumptions, especially about the claimed usefulness of bikelanes. I've added two clarifications to the body of the text to indicate that lack of empirical evidence, but I'd be happier with the article being completely re-worked because what this article is really about is the politicisation and promotion of cycling in an urban area. -- Jumble 05 Sep 2005

As an example of the low standards and disinformation of this article I should also cite this passage:

In addition, cyclists can cause disruption when there is no cycle lane available and no way for other road-users to move past, as cyclists are naturally slower.

That is just flat out wrong in many cases as anyone that bicycles downtown in any major city can attest, both in terms of the instantaneous velocity achieved by a bicycle in congestion and in the average trip speed. It also suggests that bicycles are a "disruption" when they are legally and safely travelling in the roadway. This is pernicious, inaccurate and misleading. This article is highly biased and non-neutral. -- Jumble 05 Sep 2005

Drunken bicyclists is a benefit?[edit]

Listed under "cycling every day brings a number of advantages for the cyclist as for the environment and society as a whole" is that "There are no laws against cycling under the influence of alcohol." Is this a joke? It doesn't seem like an benefit to anyone to have drunken bicyclists on the road, other than to provide the cyclist with a (rather dangerous) means by which to travel home.

  • It is also completely untrue in all North American jurisdictions and in England and Ireland. A bicycle driver is considered a road user with the rights, obligations and duties of other road users and can be subjected to the same sanctions as other vehicle drivers. -- Jumble
