PSP Download Release?[edit]

Is there any word on a rerelease for download on the PSP akin to Final Fantasy 7? Hopefully, it will be inevitable --A Chain of Flowers (talk) 16:17, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

came out in japan last Thursday, give it a few months as the PAL PS3 still cant play the CD version stably. Needs a LOT of work chocobogamer mine 23:13, 29 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Have you got a source? --A Chain of Flowers (talk) 11:46, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
source for what? if you mean the problems the euro compatibility list is a source to say its error strewn, however, as its not even confirmed for outside japan, you don't need a source for explaining nothing! chocobogamer mine 18:09, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A source to say it's available to download in Japan, so we can reference the sentance in the article --A Chain of Flowers (talk) 18:07, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Its already in the article I think chocobogamer mine 20:40, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Can Final Fantasy use VRML/X3D models?
Nope. It works proprietarily. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.232.240.49 (talk) 12:17, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Europe publisher[edit]

was Square Europe, not Sony. I've corrected this before, but for some reason someone has reverted this change to say it was published by Sony. Great stuff by whoever did that(!) The splash screen clearly says published by Square Europe Ltd. Thats why the SCE logo is not on the front of the box and why it has an SLES number not SCES. source here http://www.hellandheavennet.com/image/final-fantasy-8/images/boxeu2.jpg chocobogamer mine 22:38, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PC Version Development[edit]

I think the article forgot that there's a PC version of this game. So, there's lack of the PC version development, till now. PC version review by IGN here. — Blue 16:26, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I think that's the problems with featured articles; people just stop editing them thinking they're already "complete", even though they might not be (or might not be anymore, as the FF developers often release precious information on past titles in recent interviews). Megata Sanshiro (talk) 17:55, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Game Informer scans[edit]

At User:Teggles' request, I scanned ten pages related to FF VIII from some 1999 Game Informers. Just letting you all know in case there's some usable information in them of benefit to the article. Cheers. sesuprime 04:14, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for finding them! I'm guessing Mark Felt Sr is you? Here are the tidbits that jumped out at me for what should get included into the article:
  • Graphics team
    • The graphics team wanted to create a brighter world compared to the dark FFVII, echoed by final interview
    • Getter Robo-style Garden transformations were cut
    • Graphics team wanted to minimize the boundaries between FMV, field, and battle scenes to maintain flow; connects to battle team interview where they say the same thing: they wanted to unify the character models between these three screens
  • Sound team
    • Uematsu struggled in deciding to make a subdued background soundtrack or a more powerful melodious soundtrack
    • Mariah Carey and Celine Dion were considered to sing Eyes on Me
    • The sound team experimented with using "live sound" (aka live recordings as opposed to a midi sequencer, I guess?) in FFVIII and were impressed with the results; they wanted to make a full game with live recordings someday when not constrained by tech (what's the first FF do to this? FFX? Probably a good historical note to include)
    • Uematsu's favorite tracks are Eyes on Me, the card battle theme, and the final 8 bars of the ending theme
  • Battle team
    • This is the first FF game where they considered putting enemies on the field screen and the "enemies level up to match you" concept is retained from this initial idea, to try to get you to fight them in different ways as you and they level up; also mentioned in the last interview, this idea also persists in the XATM092 battle
    • They employed a motion capture studio but ended up making all the animations by hand using the motion capture as a reference; also mentioned by movie team
    • Selphie's slots magic were based on 4-panel comics (yonkoma). This is probably only interesting to me lol.
  • Movie team
    • Twice as many people on the movie team compared to FFVII (15 vs 30)
    • Different tools from FFVII so they had to learn new techniques
  • Event team
    • They wanted to create a lively, full world, so they included lots of named locations and also depicted more about the inner personalities of the characters more
    • Nojima was a fan of Wong so he put her in the running
    • Nojima felt that Squall and Rinoa only got "about a third of the way towards true love"
  • Last interview
    • Development for VIII took about a year
    • More instances combining FMV with controllable gameplay in this game, including having characters behind the FMV instead of using FMV as background which was in the previous game, technologically challenging
This is just a rough outline of stuff and I probably wouldn't use all of it. Feel free to add if I missed something. Axem Titanium (talk) 07:29, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Citing the game script in the story section unnecessary[edit]

I don't think it's necessary to cite specific lines of dialogue from the game's script in the story section. No other Wikipedia article for a work of fiction does this, and it's actually quite distracting. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.255.139.107 (talk) 00:38, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. Game script quotations are necessary for most video game articles, including this one and other articles in the Final Fantasy series. Darth Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 00:53, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think it helps ensure that plot summaries are staying true to the story as portrayed and not falling into "original research" territory. With that said, I also think that script cites should be kept to claims that may seem a little surprising to readers, such as plot twists, revelations, and story tidbits disclosed during sidequests. That sort of thing. —Deckiller (t-c-l) 05:59, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's also not true at all that "no other article" does this. See many, many video game FAs. Axem Titanium (talk) 03:06, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Section for Triple Triad Mini-Game[edit]

Hi, big question - The game of Triple Triad that features ithin Final Fantasy VIII, isn't mentioned by the Wiki-link in this article; that goes to an article about reoccurring themes in the Final Fantasy series (from what I've seen). I was wondering if anyone would be alright if I included a sub-section of this under the "Gameplay" section of the article, merely to outline how it is played, general rules (not the rules like "Open", "Same") regarding it, what types of cards there are and how to earn more, and describe how in-game rules are changed by different regions and such like. GUtt01 (talk) 13:03, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That information, unfortunately, would be more suited to the Final Fantasy Wikia. That level of game-guide detail would be inappropriate if it was on the FF8 game itself, and much more so for a minigame inside of it. A wikipedia article on a video game gives a general overview of how the game is played, but shouldn't go into too much detail that is only of interest to players of the game, and especially without sources. --PresN 14:30, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds fair. How about revising the Wiki-link to a url-link to the webpage on the FFWikia page that talks about it, rather than linking to the page it currently goes to? GUtt01 (talk) 18:55, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
We don't usually do inline-links like that to other websites, but I think it'd be reasonable to add an external link to the bottom of the page to whatever Wikia pages you think would be useful to readers. Kind of surprised they're not there already. --PresN 21:07, 21 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FFVIIIgirls image[edit]

I've removed the FVIIIGirls image. While the image description was trying to state it was showing the game's unique art style, there isn't really prose to support it specifically for the promo art specifically. Maybe we could find a statement or more specific in-game thing over the promo art as the game's character don't exactly show off this with the promo image.
