Why are there talks about Czech universities ??

View_of_Quebec_City_from_Parent_building_on_Laval_University_campus.jpg would have to be scaled down if it is not to be shown as "thumb", which would definitely be much better. (For someone else to do.) --Valmi 01:55, 8 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Just in case someone else wonders, I checked the information concerning asteroid 14424 being named after the university, and it proved true. --Valmi 03:53, 17 Sep 2004 (UTC)

"60 different species of birds, and 15 animal species."

What does that mean "15 animal species" ? Considering the insects and other invertebrates there's far more species of animals in my backyard.

Moving this page?[edit]

University of Montreal was recently moved to Université de Montréal, so should Laval University be moved to Université Laval ? Paul99 01:36, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would say so; it's a French-language University, that is its official name, and it's known to far more people under that name than by the English translation (partly because it's known to many more people in Québec than the rest of Canada, and partly because material appearing elsewhere in the world - pamphlets for the FNF program, for instance - say "Université Laval" even when the text is in English or another language). Since there is only a redirect to here at Université Laval, it should be possible for any logged-in user to move the page there (along with this Talk page). - toh 2005 June 29 21:04 (UTC)
OK, all the other French language universities in Quebec have their French name so this one should too. It will be moved. Paul99 30 June 2005 01:59 (UTC)

After three years, I moved it back. In English press releases the school calls itself Laval University WhisperToMe (talk) 03:37, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, everywhere on its website and in recent press releases, it calls itself Université Laval, so I suggest moving it back.Drmab (talk) 17:42, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

While I agree, I think you should formally request a move so that other editors may chime in. Permafrost46 (talk) 18:09, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Higher learning instead of university[edit]

Maybe the first line should say "Université Laval (Laval University) is the oldest institution of higher learning in Canada" instead of "Université Laval (Laval University) is the oldest university in Canada" because, as the article says, the Séminaire de Québec only became the Université Laval in 1852, 189 years after its foundation. -- Mathieugp 19:11, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Faculté des sciences sociales[edit]

Why no mention ovFaculté des sciences sociales? --Pawyilee (talk) 10:44, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Laval UniversityUniversité Laval – In line with Wikipedia's article titles on other exclusively francophone universities in Quebec (ex. Université de Montréal and Université de Sherbrooke), the associated category (Category:Université Laval) and template (Template:Université Laval) of the university , and the usage of the French name by the university itself even in English language materials (ex. here) RA0808 talkcontribs 02:52, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alumni section[edit]

The section about notable alumni is getting really large. Would it be time to merge it with List of rectors of Université Laval, to create a new List of Laval University people, as it is done with other canadian universities (see here) ? and only mention a few prominent alumni in the form of a text rather than a list.--Nonztp (talk) 18:47, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This article ignores a lot of the history[edit]

I have added a bit, about the Grand and Petit seminary but there are more facts not covered by the article.

Per Government of Canada:

In 1663, the Grand Seminary was created to establish a parish ministry, mission work and a clergy. The ‘Small Seminary’ was founded, in 1668 to instruct young Aboriginals in French culture and language. Beginning in 1674, the establishment only housed young Frenchmen who wished to become priests. After the conquest there were further changes to the school’s direction and the ‘Small Seminary’ began to accept all young people who wanted to study, not only those who wanted to become priests. https://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/dfhd/page_nhs_eng.aspx?id=694

Bilingual, not French-only[edit]

Whilst the majority of courses at the University are taught in French, it's possible to get degrees that are taught entirely in English (see this undergrad in Literature or this Master's in Business). The two Cégeps in Québec to offer diplomas entirely in both respective languages, Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles and Cégep de Sept-Îles, are clearly indicated as bilingual institutions on their pages.

This is different from, say, the French-as-a-second-language baccalaureate previously offered by the Laval, which was simply a programme at a French-language institution to learn English as a second language with French-language courses. Nor am I arguing that, say, Harvard University be bilingual because it offers B.A.s in French as a second language. Further, programmes like that of the University of Montréal, which have English-language courses designed specifically to integrate anglo students who wish to study at a French university, do not make an institution bilingual.

However, in this case, it is unambiguous. Laval University offers degrees in English which (a) are not meant to learn how to speak English, and (b) which does not require any level of French in order to complete. (The University itself does indeed have French admission criteria, but this does not make the degrees into non-English degrees any more than Harvard's entrance requirement of having taken foreign language in high school makes its degrees multilingual.)

In summary, this is simply not a French-language school; it is a bilingual school. In the same way the majority-francophone Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles is described as 'bilingual' in its lede, I am going to make a coordinate edit on this page as well. If and when it becomes no longer possible to complete a degree at the University without studying a word in French, the page should be reverted back to indicating French-only. Leavechelseaalone (talk) 23:09, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, but the admistration of those 2 cegeps is officially bilingual and a lot of programs are given in the 2 languages. The Quebec government made them bilingual because of the high amount of English speakers in their regions. Université Laval has some programs taught in English only but it remains legally a French-language university. The only officially bilingual university in Quebec is HEC Montréal.
