Need more info[edit]

Regarding: "== My article has been edited. == Why did you get rid of my image?" on my talk page-- since (a) no one owns articles here so "my article" is meaningless and (b) there are something on the order of a million articles and (c) I do quite a lot of editing, therefore I need more of a clue what exactly you're referring to. Hey[edit]

Hey, I've just learned how to talk on here properly, hehe! So thought I better reply to that message incase I seem ignorant! Yeah, I'm kind of a big EastEnders fan, you've listed it as one of your contributions - does that mean you and me are alike? lol

See WP:FPC#How_to_add_your_nomination. What he means is you forgot to transinclude the nomination on to the page. You didn't add the following text: {{Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Chicago River dyed green}} to WP:FPC. Furthermore, please sign your nominations and your indication of whether it is a self-nomination, or just a first nomination... then indicate that you support the picture for it's nomination. Moving the Wiktionary template[edit]

Why on earth did you move the Wiktionary template down on the Nosebleed article? (preceding unsigned comment by Thorpe 22:31 UTC, 28 May 2005)

It looked bad on my browser. This may be a function of my browser so feel free to move it back. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 22:43, 28 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nintendo DS colors[edit]

Because the Nintendo DS was first released by Nintendo of America (which uses American spelling), then Nintendo Corporation Limited in Japan (a nation that primarily uses American English spelling), and only then it was released in nations that use British English. 2 out of 3 native English speakers are Americans, so unless there's a good reason to use Commonwealth English spellings (such as the article being about a Commonwealth nation or the metric system), we should stick to American English spelling. In this case, since the product is mainly made and marketed by Americans and Japanese, it's clearly best to stick to American. --Carl 14:07, 29 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see you added {{attention}} to a quick and dirty 'Coal Bed' article. How's this different from '{{Clean}}'? Fabartus 05:35, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What are you trying to get at here? • Thorpe • 11:27, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I was updating the infobox to the template used by the WikiProject Computer and video games as it matches the style of other video game articles, and allows for all articles to be changed quickly. If you particularly want Fear & Repect to use the old infobox then you can change it back and I promise I will not revert it again. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Ian Moody 09:59, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Re: My edits reverted[edit]

Hi Thorpe - you wrote:

Why did you revert my edits on the stub template? Do you have a reason for this?

Numerous stub-related pages refer to the extra load placed on servers by using icons in heavy-use templates, and there seems to be general consensus as to not using them in such cases (note the number of types of stub templates that have had their icons removed in recent times). Although Template:stub is not the high-use template it once was, it could easily become so again, so - until such time as the server load problems are overcome - having an icon on it is not a good idea. See [[1]] for details. Grutness...wha? 01:51, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Fair enough. • Thorpe • 06:27, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Google Maps satellite images[edit]

Hello, I noticed that you've copied the content from User:Joshuapaquin/List of interesting Google Maps satellite images back to the article namespace. There was a VFD discussion in which 12 voted for keep, 12 voted for userfy, and 5 voted to delete. That is, while there was no majority on a specific procedure, the majority voted that the status quo was unacceptable. As userfy was the "middle ground" option, the article was moved to my user page. Moving the content to Google Maps also wasn't really an option because it had been split off from that page originally due to bloating. I'm wondering if you were unaware the VFD, or if there is another reason you returned the content to the article namespace. -Joshuapaquin 14:33, Jun 19, 2005 (UTC)

I don't know if you intend to reply... so for now I am changing the article back to a redirect. -Joshuapaquin 04:31, Jun 22, 2005 (UTC)
Go ahead. • Thorpe • 15:57, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Regarding the removed link - I fully understand the rationale here, as it is certainly important that the list be clearly distinguished as a Userpage section rather than an article itself. But why not put it in the external links section? It seems to me that that would provide the necessary distinction, and ensure that people who are looking for such a list go to the right place and don't, say, add one to the Google Maps page. -Joshuapaquin!

I am sorry if this has upset you but it was best not to use a subpage of Wikipedia. Maybe you could create a web site outside of Wikipedia with this. Why not try Wikibooks? • Thorpe • 15:22, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

I was just lumbering through some game pages and came across Donkey Konga 2. I noticed you added a higher res. box art image. What I want to say is that images can have multiple versions. Instead of creating a new page, you could have just saved the new image as the same name as the existing one and upload over it. It takes a few hours and even a few days to take full effect sometimes, but it's better than making a whole new one sometimes. Also, when you add a new image, please add the old one to Wikipedia: Images and media for deletion. I went ahead and added the old box art. Just wanted to let you know in case you didn't. Thunderbrand 18:44, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

That's why I uploaded it separately because I keep thinking the feature never works when I upload under the same name. • Thorpe • 19:10, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, it just takes a while sometimes. Thunderbrand 20:21, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

I noticed you replaced the old Microsoft logo with a new "higher quality" one. However, although it's higher resolution, the thumbnail version appearing in the article is now lower quality, because it's JPEG-encoded, and JPEG is inappropriate for this sort of image. Your image has noticable artifacts if viewed closely enough. If you can obtain a version of this file in .png or .gif format, please do so. Thanks. Deco 3 July 2005 23:20 (UTC)

The only reason I did so was because it contains offensive content. • Thorpe • 11:04, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That's irrelevant. Kurt Weber 14:01, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree. Just because you find something offensive does not mean that you have the right to remove it from someone else's user page. That's vandalism, plain and simple. --K1vsr (talk) 13:07, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
Oh, so you don't mind any kids seeing it then?  Thorpe talk 19:14, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Vandalism in the name of children is still vandalism. There is no "heroic" or "correct" reason for vandalism. Wikipedia is not censored for the protection of minors and you were completely out of line to remove the text. If it offends you that much, then don't look at it. Quite simple really. --K1vsr (talk) 01:56, August 14, 2005 (UTC)
Well, if you say so. I would understand what content sex would bring up and penis but going to someone's user page means you don't expect to see this offensive stuff.  Thorpe talk 14:52, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What a ridiculous statement. As another user said, just because you find something on another person's user page offensive doesn't mean you have the right to remove it. Nor can you justify it.

In The Groove vs. In the Groove[edit]

Thorpe,

Thanks for contributing to the In The Groove information pages. I noticed a few of your most recent alterations to entries related to In The Groove were specifically done to replace "The" with "the". I just wanted to let you know that the game is referred to by its creators as "In The Groove", instead of "In the Groove", with the "The" capitalized intentionally.

Thanks for your understanding!

Hi. I notice you reverted the logo I uploaded, I was just wondering why? I would argue the present logo is far too small, particularly compared to Image:Bbc brand.png, Image:ABC.jpg, Image:Large NBC logo.png and your own Image:Sky logo.gif. I'm not going to change it again without consulting you but I would appreciate a bit of discussion. Thanks.

Also your Sky logo was replaced with the following: Image:SkyDigiLogo.gif. I'm think its safe to say that was a step backwards and I've reverted to the original! Mark 19:06, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Picture promotion[edit]

following question copied from User talk:Veledan

Thanks for informing me about the picture which is now promoted (here). This is my first picture to actually get past this stage so what happens now? Does this mean it will be in a queue for picture of the day? -- Thorpe talk 11:52, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thorpe. Good question, and one I've been wondering about myself. I can see how the POTDs are created in advance, but I can't find any discussion of a 'queueing' system. At this point I'm going to call in an expert to answer both of us!
Solipsist, I can see you've created most of the recent POTDs. Could you please give us a bit of guidance on this? I've only been helping out with the backlog on WP:FPC for the last week or so. Should I be creating the three versions as I go along and queueing images for POTD (presumably by going to the archive and picking the next available 'red' date)? I haven't seen other people working on FPC doing this, but I'm quite happy to start and help out.
Many thanks, ~ VeledanTalk + new 12:27, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. ;-) -- Thorpe talk 12:37, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Right, here's our answer from Solipsist:
Hi Veledan - yes I've been handling POTD for a while. At the moment POTD basically works through FeaturedPictures in the order in which they were promoted, excepting we aren't yet promoting >7 new FPs a week, so on Mon/Wed/Fri we reuse an earlier featured picture. The basic starting point for setting up the Pic of the Day is the current month's archive at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/September 2005. For the unpopulated future dates, there are two edit links for the Text and Condensed versions of POTD. I then open up Wikipedia:Featured pictures thumbs and find the next FP in the sequence, open it up and find the best article that it is used on. There are then two related templates, Template:Generate_POTD_T and Template:Generate_POTD_C, which take the same set of parameters to build the Text and Condensed forms of POTD. The parameters are explained on the template's discussion page at Template talk:Generate_POTD_T, and can mostly be culled from the Image description page with the long caption being based on the text in the primary article where the image is used. I then usually do a bit of fiddling adjusting image sizes for non-standard aspect ratios, correcting 'photo credit' to 'illustration credit' where necessary and then drop the original image contributor a note to let them know that the POTD is coming up and giving them a chance to correct any mistakes on the caption and such.
There are some more accurate instructions at Wikipedia_talk:Picture_of_the_day#Generating_POTD_entries.
If it is a weekend, there are several additional steps to copy the POTD_T over to the appropriate page in Wikipedia:Today's second feature/September 2005 and protect all the pages involved (requires an admin). This bit is still finding its feet so tends to involve a lot of cut-n-paste editing, but it is probably about time I set up a Template:Generate_POTD_F to facilitate the formatting for the Today's second feature layout. -- Solipsist 14:30, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
So, yes you'll see the pic on a POTD fairly soon, but it's pretty much a matter of luck whether it'll be on the main page (shows POTD at weekends only). I have the {{Pic of the day}} template on my user page so I don't miss the weekday ones. ~ VeledanTalk + new 16:20, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Double thanks to both of you! :-) -- Thorpe talk 17:16, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

You have made 3000 edits. You can try for administration, but I have a question. How do you come about finding so much vandalism?-Anonymous68.47.26.123 16:05, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

To find vandalism is quite hard in some cases but often easy because a page will deliberately show vandalism (like blanking a page). Sometimes I will come across sneaky vandalism which is very hard to spot and this is a continuous problem here on the Wikipedia. To find out more on how to spot vandalism click here. -- Thorpe talk 17:10, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

...all of the letters in your name are in mine (Throup, Thorpe). -- Thorpe talk 23:18, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the friendly welcome. Not quite all of the letters are the same (I've got a 'u' and you've got an 'e'), but they certainly are close. Throup is actually my surname and is regulary misspelled or mispronounced as Thorpe. --Throup 07:09, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I just don't want people getting confused between the two of us. Hope you enjoy it here! -- Thorpe talk 11:43, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure people will cope fine! I would offer to change my user name, but I use my surname everywhere online as it is very rare for anyone else to have done. I look forward to editing with you in the future. Throup 18:41, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Orlando[edit]

Yup, I'm off to Orlando in two weeks. In fact, in 14 days, I will be in Florida right now.

Well it alternates each time we go. Last year we left Disney out, and did SeaWorld, Universal, Universal IOA, Busch Gardens and Wet n Wild. This year, we are leaving them all out and just doing Disney. We do everything, Downtown Disney, the water parks, DisneyQuest, sometimes even golfing.

I agree, and I think the article should stay. I just thought stuff like "convenient interface" read more like an ad than an article. I probably shouldn't have cut the invitation bit, though, that was a mistake on my part for sure. — Lomn | Talk / RfC 16:03, 3 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My user page[edit]

Please do not remove stuff from my user page; it is vandalism. If you were worried that a change made by User:66.68.172.22 was vandalism, no, that was me, and has been me for over two years. The Userpage at 66.68.172.22 for sometime actually SAID it was me for a good long time until recently. Anyways, a little research on pages edited by 66.68.172.22 would have shown you that was me, unknowingly logged out. Thanks. Jenn Dolari 01:48, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • My userpage actually was Vandalised! Thanks for the revert - Bwfc 19:00, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The image you uploaded, Image:3410.jpg, has no no source information. The image page currently doesn't specify who created the image, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, ie in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Unless the copyright status is provided, the image will be marked for deletion on 24 October 2005.

Promotional and Promophoto templates[edit]

Your User Page[edit]

Hello. I used your user page as a template to improve my own. (Since I know very little beyond the basics about editing.) I originally went to your page through the miscellaneous help desk to find out how you made your name apprear different. Just thought I'd let you know, and thank you for your indirect help. :P

By the way, how DID you change your signature? --Demonesque 23:02, 20 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Excusez-moi![edit]

Excusez-moi, but who is User:EastEnders_the_great? Do you know?

Google Suggest[edit]

Re: [3]

I'm not certain why, but I did it the hard way. I took each frame as a screenshot in Safari on Mac OS X, and then created an action in Adobe ImageReady that cropped each image and added it to the animation. It would have been much easier if I had used a program designed for screen recording, like Snapz Pro X or vncrec. The former is probably good if you're on a mac and want simplicity, the latter is free software that appears to be able to record any OS that a VNC server runs on. I'd probably use vncrec if I were to do this again. HTH ~leif(talk) 19:04, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting all of your images! / My images[edit]

Hi! I justed wanted to let you know it isn't anything personal that I've requested so many of your images to be deleted! All the best. --throup 00:23, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for putting some of my images up for deletion! Not all of them though, as you said on my talk page. The Windows Server 2003 logo (currently on that page) was replaced with my JPG version since someone had reuploaded your PNG file to a smaller size. Maybe if you put in more explanation on the summary of images it won't be uploaded again. -- Thorpe talk 08:48, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What kind of explanation would you recommend? BTW as I said, it is nothing personal I ended up putting so many of yours up for deletion -- I was targetting Microsoft images, which it seems were usually added by you in the first place. --throup 09:24, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Like this: Microsoft® Windows Server 2003 official logo, taken from Microsoft web site. [4]
"Microsoft, Windows and the Windows logo are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and/or other countries." -- Thorpe talk 09:51, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
OK, would you suggest copying the copyright statement from all websites I may take images from? BTW I've posted a comment at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion/2005 October 23 regarding these images. I'd be interested in your thoughts. --throup 10:08, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for tagging this article as speedy. However, "Not very well written" is not a speedy deletion criteria. Please review WP:CSD, and use one of the criteria there when tagging articles as speedy. Thanks again for contributing! Ëvilphoenix Burn! 02:34, 24 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there![edit]

Hey Thorpe, just wanted to say a much-belated thanks for giving a welcome message on my User page. I've recently run across two articles that need to be either merged together or, well, why don't you have a look at them:

List of New York City television studios

List of New York City Television and Film studios

I've posted comments on both talk pages about these two. Do you know how we can do something about these? Clearly, one is a version of the other, or, the pages were created by the same person on two different occasions and that person forgot about making the other first.

Thanks!

Image:Double Clef.jpg has been listed as a possibly unfree image[edit]

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Double Clef.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. Please go to its page to provide the necessary information on the source or licensing of this image (if you have any), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

I decided to put this up for Possibly unfree images, because the logo exemption for trademark/copyright only applies to actual logos and not necessarily fictional ones, so it should be considered a work of visual art and so you'd have to satisfy the general copyright fair use requirement or get permission to use it. Peyna 15:00, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My reply. --Thorpe 15:05, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You'd have to find another fair use tag which is more appropriate; unfortunately I don't see any options. Maybe {{art}}; or {{fairusein}} if you think it qualifies as a fair use in a particular article. Peyna 15:08, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ashford? Really? Wow. That is very close. Have you ever thought about running for adminship? I would think you'd have a very good chance at getting it. FireFox 22:22, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

*Cough* edit: Have you ever thought about running for adminship again? FireFox 22:33, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes of course I would support you! I'd also be very happy to nominate you if there was nobody else. FireFox 22:39, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well hows about this... I'll write out the RfA tomorrow, and once I've done that, I'll add you to my msn (if that's alright with you), and you can see it, say what you want to change if anything, and then it'll be up to you to answer the questions. FireFox 22:46, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Righto... I added you tonight so I don't forget to tomorrow. If you plan your questions for tomorrow, then I should be able to get your RfA up on WP:RFA tomorrow, unless you want to wait a bit. Sorry about all the "tomorrows", it seems a bit drony! FireFox 22:51, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just going offline now. I'll be online all day (ish) tomorrow, and I'll finish your RfA "statement" soon as well. So I'll probably talk to you tomorrow then! FireFox 22:58, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
And a Merry Christmas to you too! I see your RfA is doing well :) FireFox 16:23, 25 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Luke Skywalker[edit]

You might not consider it significant, but Luke Skywalker's antics with lightsabers were front-page news in several major newspapers during the late 1970s. ABBA stole one of the pictures for their album and pretended it was them, but it wasn't. And it's true; it really was a penis substitute, most of Luke's penis was cut off when he was fighting Darth Maul and he only had 1 3/4 inches left after that. They didn't put *that* in the film because the truth frightens them :-P 212.126.143.75 16:57, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You're joking right? --Thorpe | talk 16:58, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you corrected a typo on my userpage. Thanks! :) Also, good luck on your RfA, which seems to be doing really well. «LordViD» 15:29, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Thorpe, now that I'm an administrator, I just wanted to thank you for your support on my RfA. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:35, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations![edit]

Even though your RfA has not officially finished yet, let me be the first to tell you...

Congratulations!!!

FireFox 15:10, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations![edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- 16:04, 31 December 2005 (UTC)

Re:Admin[edit]

Once again, Congratulations. It's totally fine for you to delete your own subpages, I do it all the time. Same for images I suppose. Remember that deletion of images is permanent, you can't revert it. So if you're thinking of deleting your own images, that's fine but remember to check "what links here" first, just in case. Have fun, and a happy new year! FireFox 11:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
