Just a heads up that this article has been edited by an IP address belonging to Discovery Communications, the company that owns the Discovery Channel. The IP address is: 198.147.10.56. By the way, regarding the Censored section, I checked who contributed that and also what other things they had contrubuted, and they had mostly spammed other entries with the same paragraph (or similar). How is Spam an accurate term for posting facts? I make no claims to my talents as a writer, however I ask that you allow FACTS to remain. Relevance is relative. official name?[edit]

The offical name is Discovery Channel, as seen on their official site.
Discovery Channel is the brand that is primarily a cable network. Discovery Communications is the parent organization.

This really reads like a discovery channel advertisement - complete with logos. It would be interesting to see some facts about corporate organization, etc. If such might be considered wirthy, I'd be happy to do the research myself

  • I've used SEC filings by Discovery Holding Company to insert information on Discovery Communications Inc. the company which owns and manages the Discovery Channel. I'd recommend that 1) someone cleanup the information - I quoted fairly extensively 2) a separation of Discovery Channel and Discovery Communications -- currently they are the same page which is confusing.Jvandyke 18:46, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, it was. They used it until 2002.

Retail outlets[edit]

Did they take over The Nature Company? I did a Google search for The Nature Company, and it directed me to the Discovery Channel Stores. If so, this should be noted, as well as a page created for The Nature Company, with the latter categorized under "Defunct US retail chains."

Criticism[edit]

At least in Canada, they've really watered down their science programming. They have shows that don't really deal with science at all, and they even have blatant pseudoscience shows (The Haunting). Discovery Channel is a dumbed-down "channel for the masses", a McDonald's of pseudoscience. Fortunately, there is still National Geographic, which may be going in the same direction of Discovery Channel, but can still provide more educational content.
It is understandable that it is not economically rational to supply what there is no demand for. If our society prefers entertainment over education, then the channel is not to blame. Nevertheless, the channel should not be the driving force behind this transition to less intellectual content only because that is easier to sell.

I also agree. I really love Discovery, but some of the crap that they try to pass off as science is unbelievable. I remember they had a show about "chemtrails" a few weeks ago. The people they had on that were living in reality were only allowed a few minutes or even seconds of air time for a full hour show. And one of the "experiments" to test if there actually was aluminium oxide in contrails was to put a dish outside on a rock and let it catch the raid that was coming down. Cycling sponsorship drop[edit]

Just a note/reminder that at the end of this professional road cycling season (ending October 20 with Giro di Lombardia), the Discovery Channel will no longer be the title sponsor of the Capital Sports & Entertainment managed cycling team now known as "Discovery Channel." I am not removing/editing the information from the page at the moment as it is still current and correct, and the linked to "professional cycling team" WP page correctly notes the upcoming sponsorship drop. Lots of "new", "currently", "today" and such stuff. Most of it seems to mean "in 2007-08". See the difference? I've updated a couple of stats in History (the source links still work, just newer info) and reworded others. Family Friendly Shows[edit]

It would be great to have a list of shows/time blocks that are family friendly. If it wasn't for sex, nobody would even have a family. I'm more worried about kids seeing the commercials about spending money on disposable crap they don't need. Not sure what "summer fun" is supposed to mean, but it sounds wholesome to me. "Family friendly" is a too vague and subjective a term for your proposal to work, I'm afraid. Romanian RCS&RDS[edit]

In November 2012, the Romanian RCS&RDS, the biggest company of its kind on the internal market, interrupted its broadcasting of Discovery Communications channels, including Discovery Channel. The CEO of Discovery Communications Mark Hollinger sent a open letter in his attempt to counteract the action of RCS&RDS, attracting the attention to the negation of the alleged right of the viewer to choose the viewed channels [1]. In turn, RCS&RDS issued a press statement accusing of hypocrisy Hollinger′s discourse attentive at the needs of viewers and attracted attention to the fact that, during negotiations, „the main preoccupations of the Discovery representatives was maintaining as high as possible tarrifs and monetary gains” [2].

Based on this passage alone, I have absolutely no idea what this controversy is about. What is Romanian RCS&RDS? It says they are "the biggest company of its kind on the internal market", but doesn't say what that kind is, nor is there a link to a page that might explain. Discovery Channel Is No Longer a "Science, Technology and History" Channel[edit]

The opening of this article is no longer accurate (has not been for a long time). The opening erroneously states that the Discovery Channel "provides documentary television programming focused primarily on popular science, technology and history."

It has really turned into a variety channel with a lot of reality shows about rednecks, as well as a show or two about people building motorcycles. Along with this programming there is still some science, some technology and some history. The opening of the article should reflect this reality.

A good additional section might be use the many citations available from credible sources complaining how the Discovery Channel has been "dumbed down" along with mention of the specific executives who have been instrumental in gutting the original mission of the channel.

Discovery Channel → Discovery (TV channel) – Recently in a new logo put out in July this year, the channel introduced a new styled globe with the word "Discovery" under it. I even looked at their Twitter page, and it seems they are just called Discovery now. And I do mean scrubbed: "Discovery pulled all references to the program from its website, and Freeman’s Revelations Entertainment does not list the show among its projects. Phoenix scrubbed the series from her social media feed. Discovery was still promoting the show just a couple of weeks ago.
